Metal-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes For Gas Sensing Applications, Icell Sharafeldin Feb 2020

Metal-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes For Gas Sensing Applications, Icell Sharafeldin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports on the investigation of metal-decorated carbon nanotubes-based sensor arrays with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity toward toxic gases. Ab initio first-principles methods were used to expedite the process of identifying the right materials with the highest potential compared to in-lab trial and error as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the gas adsorption mechanism. The mechanism of NO2 adsorption on Cu-, Pt- and Ti-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was investigated. Modelling the isolated NO2 molecule indicated the formation of a band gap between the 3Ï€* HOMO and 5σ* LUMO levels, which were found to be the …

Theses and Dissertations

Following the discovery of cisplatin over 50 years ago, this platinum-based drug (PBD) has been a widely used and effective form of cancer therapy, primarily causing cell death by inducing DNA damage and triggering apoptosis. However, the dose limiting toxicity of cisplatin has led to the development of the newer generations' platinum-based drugs (second and third) that maintain the cytotoxicity of cisplatin but have more acceptable side-effect profiles. In addition to the creation of new analogs, tumor delivery systems such as liposome-encapsulated platinum drugs have been designed and are currently in clinical trials. In this study, we have created and …

The effects of farm management on non-native species and the structure and function of native communities and ecosystems on crop yield is poorly documented especially in the cocoa agroforestry systems of West Africa. We assessed termite damages, cocoa plantations structural characteristic and local farmer knowledge to refine the critical role of shade trees management on subterranean crops pests and the consequences on marketable yield in five cocoa agroforestry systems. Farmers recognized termites as the most damaging subterranean pests and clearly described the type of damages they cause on cocoa trees and seedlings. Complete shade removal or very heavy shade on …

Aphids vector many plant viruses in a non-persistent manner i.e., virus particles bind loosely to the insect mouthparts (stylet). This means that acquisition of virus particles from infected plants, and inoculation of uninfected plants by viruliferous aphids, are rapid processes that require only brief probes of the plant's epidermal cells. Virus infection alters plant biochemistry, which causes changes in emission of volatile organic compounds and altered accumulation of nutrients and defence compounds in host tissues. These virus-induced biochemical changes can influence the migration, settling and feeding behaviours of aphids. Working mainly with cucumber mosaic virus and several potyviruses, a number …

The imperatives of environmental sustainability, poverty alleviation and social justice (partially codified in the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs) call for ambitious societal transformations. As such, few aspects of actionable knowledge for sustainability are more crucial than those concerning the processes of transformation. This article offers a brief overview of different conceptualisations of transformation, and outlines a set of practical principles for effective research and action towards sustainability. We review three approaches to transformations, labelled: ‘structural’, ‘systemic’ and ‘enabling’. We show how different ways of understanding what we mean by transformations can affect what actions follow. But these approaches are …

Recurrent Ttn Metatranscript‐Only C.39974–11t>G Splice Variant Associated With Autosomal Recessive Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita And Myopathy, Sj Bryen, Lj Ewans, J Pinner, Et Al Feb 2020

Recurrent Ttn Metatranscript‐Only C.39974–11t>G Splice Variant Associated With Autosomal Recessive Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita And Myopathy, Sj Bryen, Lj Ewans, J Pinner, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

We present eight families with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita and myopathy bearing a TTN intron 213 extended splice-site variant (NM_001267550.1:c.39974-11T>G), inherited in trans with a second pathogenic TTN variant. Muscle-derived RNA studies of three individuals confirmed mis-splicing induced by the c.39974-11T>G variant; in-frame exon 214 skipping or use of a cryptic 3' splice-site effecting a frameshift. Confounding interpretation of pathogenicity is the absence of exons 213-217 within the described skeletal muscle TTN N2A isoform. However, RNA-sequencing from 365 adult human gastrocnemius samples revealed that 56% specimens predominantly include exons 213-217 in TTN transcripts (inclusion rate ≥66%). Further, RNA-sequencing of …

Modelling The Effects Of Slip On Dipole/Wall Collision Problems Using A Lattice Boltzmann Equation Method, S Mohammed, T Reis, D Graham

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We study the physics of flow due to the interaction between a viscous dipole and boundaries that permit slip. This includes partial and free slip, and interactions near corners. The problem is investigated by using a two relaxation time lattice Boltzmann equation with moment-based boundary conditions. Navier-slip conditions, which involve gradients of the velocity, are formulated and applied locally. The implementation of free-slip conditions with the moment-based approach is discussed. Collision angles of 0°, 30°, and 45° are investigated. Stable simulations are shown for Reynolds numbers between 625 and 10 000 and various slip lengths. Vorticity generation on the wall …

Fabrication Of Nanofibrous/Xerogel Layer-By-Layer Biocomposite Scaffolds For Skin Tissue Regeneration: In Vitro Study, Fatma Elshishiny, Wael Mamdouh Sayed Ahmed

Faculty Journal Articles

Skin burn wounds are a crucial issue that could reduce life quality. Although numerous effective skin products have invaded the biomedical market, most of them still demonstrate some limitations regarding their porosity, swelling and degradation behaviors, antibacterial properties, and cytotoxicity. Thus, the aim of this study is to fabricate novel trilayered asymmetric porous scaffolds that can mimic the natural skin layers. In particular, the fabricated scaffold constitutes an upper electrospun chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) layer and a lower xerogel layer, which is made of effective skin extracellular matrix components. Both layers are fixed together using fibrin glue as a middle layer. The …

Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) cause serious epidemics in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), a vital food security crop in many low-to-medium income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Aphids transmit these viruses “non-persistently,” i.e., virions attach loosely to the insects' stylets. Viruses may manipulate aphid-host interactions to enhance transmission. We used direct observation and electrical penetration graph measurements to see if the three viruses induced similar or distinct changes in feeding behaviors of two aphid species, Aphis fabae and Myzus persicae. Both aphids vector BCMV, BCMNV, and CMV but A. …

Activity-dependent protein synthesis plays an important role during neuronal development by fine-tuning the formation and function of neuronal circuits. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs are integral to this regulation because of their ability to control protein synthesis in a rapid, specific and potentially reversible manner. miRNA mediated regulation is a multistep process that involves inhibition of translation before degradation of targeted mRNA, which provides the possibility to store and reverse the inhibition at multiple stages. This flexibility is primarily thought to be derived from the composition of miRNA induced silencing complex (miRISC). AGO2 is likely the only obligatory component …

Introduction:

Population health surveys inform and demonstrate the impact of public health policies. However, the performance of such surveys in specific groups of interest (e.g., Hispanics/Latinos in a neighborhood of New York City) is rarely studied.

Method:

We compared measures for obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and current smoking based on the New York City Community Health Survey (CHS, a telephone survey of New York City adults) with the Hispanic Community Health Survey/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), an in-person survey of Hispanic/Latino adults in four communities in the United States (2008-2011), including the Bronx. CHS data were limited to Hispanic/Latinos living in the …

Oviposition site selection by gravid female insects is an important determinant in species distribution, abundance, and population dynamics. Females may assess the suitability of a potential oviposition substrate by using cues from conspecific or heterospecific individuals already present. Here, we assessed whether the presence of conspecific or heterospecific larvae and parasites influenced oviposition decisions by the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Linneaus). Using dual and multiple-choice oviposition bioassays, we found that gravid female S. calcitrans avoided substrates with conspecific larvae, the larvae of house flies, Musca domestica (Linneaus), and the mite Macrocheles muscaedomesticae (Scopoli). Avoidance of conspecific and heterospecific larvae persisted …

Introduction: In our daily life, arm activities, whether supported or unsupported play a major role. Both simple and complex activities require the muscles, namely trapezius, pectoralis minor, scalene, and intercostals, to participate in arm positioning. These muscles also enact as the accessory respiratory muscles. Therefore, arm elevation increases the load on these muscles and they fail to perform dual activities, resulting in arm fatigue and a feeling of dyspnoea in healthy individuals as well as in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Various upper limb exercise tests were designed to measure this impairment, one of them being the six-minute peg board …

Back To Music: Disabled Musicians And The Loss Of Music, Nuria Bonet

School of Art, Design and Architecture

For musicians, professionals and amateurs, performing music can have a central role in their life. While it can determine their social, professional and cultural life, it also determines their identity. Playing an instrument can connect you to people with similar knowledge and experiences, and, most importantly, passion. Losing the ability to play one’s instrument can therefore be devastating to an individual, as they lose a part of themselves.

RNase E is a 472-kDa homo-Tetrameric essential endoribonuclease involved in RNA processing and turnover in Escherichia coli. In its N-Terminal half (NTH) is the catalytic active site, as also a substrate 5′-sensor pocket that renders enzyme activity maximal on 5′-monophosphorylated RNAs. The protein's non-catalytic C-Terminal half (CTH) harbours RNA-binding motifs and serves as scaffold for a multiprotein degradosome complex, but is dispensable for viability. Here, we provide evidence that a full-length hetero-Tetramer, composed of a mixture of wild-Type and (recessive lethal) active-site mutant subunits, exhibits identical activity in vivo as the wild-Type homo-Tetramer itself ('recessive resurrection'). When all of the …

Changing The Paradigm In Armenia-Diaspora Relations: State-Centered Institutions And Transnational Governance, Nerses Kopalyan

Political Science Faculty Research

Nation-states that encompass large Diasporas are faced with the wider responsibility of accounting for two types of members: citizens that live within the territory of the state and members of the broader nation that reside in the Diaspora. In the Armenian case, legally speaking, an Armenian is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia; but, at the same time, a diasporan Armenian is equally qualified as an Armenian, even if they do not live within the legal boundaries of the state.
