Land Cover Maps Of The Eastern Upper Peninsula, Michigan, Using Radar-Optical Fusion Of Multi-Temporal Imagery In Google Earth Engine, Lucas Spaete, Jodi Brandt, Eric Clark, Danielle Fagan

Human Environment Systems Datasets

The objective of this project was to develop a repeatable workflow in Google Earth Engine to produce high-resolution (10m) land cover maps for the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We used multi-temporal Sentinel optical and radar data from 2019 in Google Earth Engine, and Random Forest classification algorithms, to make two classifications: a) an “upland-lowland” forest map, consisting of upland forest, lowland forest, and water; and b) a “forest type” map” consisting of coniferous forest, deciduous forest, non-forest, and water. To train and validate the classifications, we used a field-based reference dataset of over 500 field data points collected by …

Thermally-Induced Optical Modulation In A Vanadium Dioxide-On-Silicon Waveguide, Vadivukkarasi Jeyaselvan, Anand Pal, P. S.Anil Kumar, Shankar Kumar Selvaraja

Open Access archive

In this paper, we report phase-pure vanadium dioxide (VO2) deposition on silicon-on-insulator and demonstrate switching/modulation exploiting the phase-change property. We present electrical and optical properties of VO2 during phase transition. Exploiting the phase change property, optical modulation is achieved by thermally tuning the VO2 phase using a lateral micro-heater beside the waveguide. We achieve an optical modulation extinction of 25 dB and a low insertion loss of 1.4 dB using a ring resonator with a VO2 patch. We also demonstrate the switching performance of a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer and present a detailed discussion on the optimal operating point to achieve …

Cultural Geography: Local News Fosters Audience Attachment To Spaces And Places In The Digital Era, Christina C. Smith Jan 2020

Cultural Geography: Local News Fosters Audience Attachment To Spaces And Places In The Digital Era, Christina C. Smith

Faculty and Staff Works

Despite the endless struggles, including circulation and revenue declines and increasing digital competition, that larger daily print newspapers have been battling for years, geographicallybounded, small-town weekly print newspapers across the United States continuously remain vital to their communities in the digital age because they remain faithful to their fundamental function as providers of reliable and relevant news to their audiences. This essay explores why these media remain relevant to their audiences in a global society. Ultimately, the researcher suggests geographically-bounded U.S. weekly print newspapers aren’t facing the same struggles as their larger brethren, the daily newspapers, and audiences across the …

Relational Embeddedness And Disruptive Innovations: The Mediating Role Of Absorptive Capacity, Zhiwei Wang, Juan Ling, Jay I. Chok Jan 2020

Relational Embeddedness And Disruptive Innovations: The Mediating Role Of Absorptive Capacity, Zhiwei Wang, Juan Ling, Jay I. Chok

Faculty and Staff Works

What are the driving factors of disruptive innovations in emerging economies from a network perspective? We argue that three forms of absorptive capacity (i.e. exploratory, exploitative and transformative learning) mediate the relationship between a firm’s network relations and disruptive innovations. We tested the hypotheses with a survey of 251 firms in China and iterated the conceptual model to reflect the crucial insight that disrupters in emerging economies can leap from exploratory learning to disruptive innovation. We surmise exploratory learning help disrupters outsource transformative and exploitative learning via their supply chains. Suggestions for future research and limitations are also discussed.

Degradation Of Transcriptional Repressor Atf4 During Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity, Spencer G. Smith, Kathryn A. Haynes, Ashok N. Hegde Jan 2020

Degradation Of Transcriptional Repressor Atf4 During Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity, Spencer G. Smith, Kathryn A. Haynes, Ashok N. Hegde

Faculty and Staff Works

Maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity requires gene expression mediated by cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB). Gene expression driven by CREB can commence only if the inhibition by a transcriptional repressor activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4; also known as CREB2) is relieved. Previous research showed that the removal of ATF4 occurs through ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Using chemically induced hippocampal long-term potentiation (cLTP) as a model system, we investigate the mechanisms that control ATF4 degradation. We observed that ATF4 phosphorylated at serine-219 increases upon induction of cLTP and decreases about 30 min thereafter. Proteasome inhibitor β-lactone prevents the decrease in ATF4. We found …

We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3-20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft …

Management and Accounting Faculty Scholarship

The large, positive correlation between speaking time and leader emergence is well-established. As such, some authors have argued for a ``babble hypothesis'' of leadership, suggesting that only the quantity of speaking, not its quality, determines leader emergence. However, previous tests of this notion may have been problematic. Some studies have asserted a causal effect of speaking time on leader emergence based on experimental studies, but have limited participant communication, access to reliable information, or both. Other studies have used more ecologically valid designs, but have not always controlled for relevant participant traits or roles, suggesting potential endogeneity effects. Testing the …

Introduction. Neighbourhood characteristics are associated with several diseases, but few studies have investigated the association between neighbourhood and health in Jamaica. We evaluated the relationship between neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES) and blood pressure (BP) among youth, 15–24 years old, in Jamaica. Methods. A pooled analysis was conducted using data from three studies (two national surveys and a birth cohort), conducted between 2005–2008, with individual level BP, anthropometric and demographic data, and household SES. Data on neighbourhood SES were obtained from the Mona Geo-Informatics Institute. Neighbourhood was defined using community boundaries from the Social Development Commission in Jamaica. Community characteristics (poverty, …

Transformative Learning Experiences Through Short-Term Study Abroad Programs, Tsu-Ming Chiang, Jenq-Foung Yao

Faculty and Staff Works

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected in the 21st century, it is crucial to teach college students how to acquire cultural competence as global citizens. Learning through study abroad involves total immersion and active engagement in understanding other cultures and people. It challenges individuals’ ethnocentric beliefs and habitual frames of reference to foster inclusive and global perspectives as transformative learners (Mezirow, 1997). Furthermore, even in short-term study abroad programs, through intentional planning, faculty may embed multiple high impact educational learning experiences in their courses. Collaboration with a foreign university can further enhance students’ cultural knowledge by creating peer interactions in …
