This study reports on estimates of residential preferences in the Mountain West region of the US. The estimates are derived from a choice experiment funded by the Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Transit Authority – an experiment based on large samples of both homeowners and renters who participated in a larger, statewide transportation study. The choice experiment and transportation study provides a rich set of household- and individual-specific demographic controls, enabling us to identify a host of factors contributing to heterogeneity in residential preferences. We leverage a percentage-change housing-cost attribute included in the experiment to obtain measures of marginal …

Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) accounts for nearly 1.2 million deaths per annum worldwide. Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mtb strains, TB, a curable and avertable disease, remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Isoniazid (INH) is a first-line anti-TB drug while ethionamide (ETH) is used as a second-line anti-TB drug. INH and ETH resistance develop through a network of genes involved in various biosynthetic pathways. In this study, we identified Rv0023, an Mtb protein belonging to the xenobiotic response element (XRE) family of transcription regulators, which has a role in generating higher …

Supplemental Material For: A Model-Based Approach To The Tempo Of “Collapse”: The Case Of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Robert J. Dinapoli, Timothy M. Reith, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) presents a quintessential case where the tempo of investment in monumentality is central to debates regarding societal collapse, with the common narrative positing that statue platform (ahu) construction ceased sometime around AD 1600 following an ecological, cultural, and demographic catastrophe. This narrative remains especially popular in fields outside archaeology that treat collapse as historical fact and use Rapa Nui as a model for collapse more generally. Resolving the tempo of “collapse” events, however, is often fraught with ambiguity given a lack of formal modeling, uncritical use of radiocarbon estimates, and inattention to information embedded in …

Dietary Intake Of Sodium By Children: Why It Matters, Manjula Gowrishankar, Becky Blair, Michael J. Rieder Feb 2020

Dietary Intake Of Sodium By Children: Why It Matters, Manjula Gowrishankar, Becky Blair, Michael J. Rieder

Paediatrics Publications

Dietary sodium is required in very small amounts to support circulating blood volume and blood pressure (BP). Available nutritional surveillance data suggest that most Canadian children consume sodium in excess of their dietary requirements. Approximately 80% of the sodium Canadians consume comes from processed and packaged foods. High sodium intakes in children may be an indicator of poor diet quality. Results from systematic reviews and meta-analyses have demonstrated that decreasing dietary sodium in children leads to small but clinically insignificant decreases in BP. However, population-level strategies to reduce sodium consumption, such as food product reformulation, modifying food procurement processes, and …

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is associated with acute hepatitis disease, which may lead to chronic disease in immunocompromised individuals. The disease is particularly severe among pregnant women (20–30% mortality). The only licensed vaccine against HEV, which is available in China, is the Escherichia coli purified recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) encompassing the 368–660 amino acids (aa) of the viral ORF2 protein. The viral capsid is formed by the ORF2 protein, which harbors three glycosylation sites. Baculo virus expression system has been employed to generate a glycosylated VLP, which encompasses 112–608aa of the ORF2 protein. Here, we sought to produce a recombinant …

A large number of genomic regions, such as transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) captured from next generation sequencing (NGS) data analyses or those available from the public resource database ENCODE, are generally overlapped to answer a variety of biological questions. Though several command-line tools are available to perform such an analysis, there is a notable lack of an integrated webserver application with which to identify genomic region intersections, generate publication-ready plots depicting subsets of the overlapped regions, and perform functional annotation. Thus, there is an ardent need for a comprehensive and user-friendly webserver application that allows the users to either …

New Magnetic Field Models Of The Moon, Dhananjay Ravat, Michael E. Purucker, Nils Olsen Feb 2020

New Magnetic Field Models Of The Moon, Dhananjay Ravat, Michael E. Purucker, Nils Olsen

Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Data

We use L1-norm model regularization of |Br| component at the surface on magnetic monopoles bases and along-track magnetic field differences alone (without vector observations) to derive high quality global magnetic field models at the surface of the Moon. The practical advantages to this strategy are: monopoles are more stable at closer spacing in comparison to dipoles, improving spatial resolution; L1-norm model regularization leads to sparse models which may be appropriate for the Moon which has regions of localized magnetic field features; and along-track differences reduce the need for ad-hoc external field noise reduction strategies. We examine also the …

Conundrum Or Paradox: Deconstructing The Spurious Case Of Water Scarcity In The Himalayan Region Through An Institutional Economics Narrative, Rinan Shah, Shrinivas Badiger

Open Access archive

Water scarcity in mountain regions such as the Himalaya has been studied with a pre-existing notion of scarcity justified by decades of communities’ suffering from physical water shortages combined by difficulties of access. The Eastern Himalayan Region (EHR) of India receives significantly high amounts of annual precipitation. Studies have nonetheless shown that this region faces a strange dissonance: an acute water scarcity in a supposedly ‘water-rich’ region. The main objective of this paper is to decipher various drivers of water scarcity by locating the contemporary history of water institutions within the development trajectory of the Darjeeling region, particularly Darjeeling Municipal …

Background and Objectives: Regular and repeat blood donations may cause reduced body iron stores (BIS), which may lead to a shrinking donor pool. Furthermore, hemoglobin (Hb) itself is quite an inadequate measure to detect iron deficiency. Hence, our primary aim was to understand the effect of repeated blood donations on BIS in regular blood donors. Study Design and Setting: We conducted a prospective study on voluntary whole-blood donors (September 2015 through August 2017). Donor demographics were noted. Donors were further divided into four groups, depending on their number of donations. Their samples were tested for Hb, red cell indices, and …

Warts are noncancerous benign tumors caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The success rates of cryotherapy and immunotherapy, two common treatment methods for cutaneous warts, are 44% and 72%, respectively. The treatment methods, therefore, fail to cure a significant percentage of the patients. This study aims to develop a reliable machine learning model to accurately predict the success of immunotherapy and cryotherapy for individual patients based on their demographic and clinical characteristics. We employed support vector machine (SVM) classifier utilizing a dataset of 180 patients who were suffering from various types of warts and received treatment either by immunotherapy …

Solar Fed Bldc Motor Drive For Mixer Grinder Using A Buck-Boost Converter, Deekshitha S. Nayak, R. Shivarudraswamy

Open Access archive

In existing mixer grinders, the universal motor is used due to its high starting torque than the induction motor. To achieve higher speed for smaller devices, the implementation of the universal motor becomes cheaper. The absence of brushes and the reduction of noise in the BLDC extends its lifetime, making it ideal for a mixer grinder. The solar-powered BLDC motor drive for a mixer grinder is presented in this paper. A DC-DC Buck Boost (BB) converter is utilized to operate the PV (photovoltaic) array at its highest power. The proposed hysteresis current (HC) control BLDC system is developed in the …

Hybrid Photovoltaic And Wind Mini-Grids In Kenya: Techno-Economic Assessment And Barriers To Diffusion, Rasmus Magni Johannsen, Poul Alberg Østergaard, Rebecca Hanlin

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Mini-grids have been widely developed for rural electrification purposes in Kenya, predominantly as systems combining photovoltaic modules (PV), a diesel generator, and battery capacity. (Small) wind turbines have been largely neglected in such setups and are basically non-existent in Kenyan mini-grids despite potential complementarity with PV due to different temporal production profiles of PV and wind power. This study investigates why small wind turbines have largely been omitted from Kenyan mini-grids from both a techno-economic and diffusion theoretical perspective. A techno-economic model is used for backtesting the feasibility of a hybrid PV/wind system, and building upon theories of innovation and …
