Chronic adenoiditis leading to adenoid hypertrophy is common in children. Many cases would also have co-existing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Infact, long lasting bacterial infection of the adenoids has been hypothesized to be the cause for CRS in these children. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the departments of ENT and Micro-biology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, India between 2016 and 2017. 20 subjects who were diagnosed with CRS and adenoid hypertrophy took part in the study. Aerobic, anaerobic and fungal culture sensitivity of adenoid tissue was done along with aerobic and fungal culture sensitivity of nasal swabs from middle meatus. 2 …

Immunocompetence Of Gynaikothrips Uzeli (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) Populations From Different Latitudes Against Beauveria Bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae), Deyi Yu, Peng Huang, Yongwen Lin, Jinai Yao, Yanyang Lan, Komivi Senyo Akutse, Xiangyu Hou

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Gynaikothrips uzeli gall thrips are protected from insecticide exposure by their leaf gall habitat. A biocontrol strategy based on entomopathogenic fungi is an alternative approach for the control of G. uzeli. Higher temperatures can promote the reproduction and spread of pests; however, the impact of higher temperatures on biological control is unclear. We studied the immunocompetence of thrips from different latitudes and determined the effect of degree days on thrips immunity. We examined the potential impact of temperature on the biocontrol provided by entomopathogenic fungi. Beauveria bassiana pathogenicity against thrips increased with decreasing latitude, suggesting that immunity of thrips increased …

Influence Of Seeing A Red Face During The Male–Male Encounters Of Mosquito-Specialist Spiders, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson, Lisa A. Taylor

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Males of Evarcha culicivora, an East African jumping spider (Salticidae), have bright red faces. Here, we investigated how seeing a red face might influence a male’s behaviour during encounters with another male. We applied black eyeliner to conceal the red on a male’s face and measured the spectral properties of male faces with and without the eyeliner. Only the faces without eyeliner reflected in the long-wavelength range corresponding to red. In experiments over 2 days, where eyeliner was absent on the first day and present on the second, we compared how two groups of males responded to their mirror images. …

Ctx Phage Of Vibrio Cholerae: Genomics And Applications, Archana Pant, Bhabatosh Das, Rupak K. Bhadra

Open Access archive

The bipartite genome of Vibrio cholerae is divided into two circular non-homologous chromosomes, which harbor several genetic elements like phages, plasmids, transposons, integrative conjugative elements, and pathogenic islands that encode functions responsible for disease development, antimicrobial resistance, and subsistence in hostile environments. These elements are highly heterogeneous, mobile in nature, and encode their own mobility functions or exploit host-encoded enzymes for intra- and inter-cellular movements. The key toxin of V. cholerae responsible for the life-threatening diarrheal disease cholera, the cholera toxin, is coded by part of the genome of a filamentous phage, CTXϕ. The replicative genome of CTXϕ is divided …

Analysis Of Limited Skeletal Elements, Anna-Marie David Feb 2020

Analysis Of Limited Skeletal Elements, Anna-Marie David

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Forensic Anthropologists around the world use a variety of techniques to understand people using analysis of human remains. However, in instances when a researcher is given an incomplete set of remains it narrows the variety of methods that can be used as well as the accuracy of those methods. Therefore, information about the individual is restrained and can limit positive identification. At the University of Montana graduate students in the Forensic Anthropology program work together under the supervision of their professors to analyze skeletal remains cases. A Forensic Anthropology skeletal report consists of; minimum number of individuals (MNI), sex, age, …

Background: A long-term experiment at two trial sites in Kenya has been on-going since 2007 to assess the effect of organic and conventional farming systems on productivity, profitability and sustainability. During these trials the presence of significant numbers of termites (Isoptera) was observed. Termites are major soil macrofauna and within literature they are either depict as 'pests' or as important indicator for environmental sustainability. The extent by which termites may be managed to avoid crop damage, but improve sustainability of farming systems is worthwhile to understand. Therefore, a study on termites was added to the long-term experiments in Kenya. The …

Why Change In The Gaming Industry Should Never Surprise Anyone, David Schwartz Feb 2020

Why Change In The Gaming Industry Should Never Surprise Anyone, David Schwartz

Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Research

There has been a great deal of change in the news lately for the gaming world. After more than a decade as head of MGM Resorts, Jim Murren is stepping down. The Chinese coronavirus outbreak has sent Macau gaming revenues into a tailspin. On a happier note, a big brand name is returning to a Las Vegas casino, with the announcement that Hilton will be operating three hotels as part of the Genting Group’s Resorts World development. Change is in the air. But that’s nothing new, and nothing the industry shouldn’t be expecting.

Tumor cells must alter their antioxidant capacity for maximal metastatic potential. Yet the antioxidant adaptations required for ovarian cancer transcoelomic metastasis, which is the passive dissemination of cells in the peritoneal cavity, remain largely unexplored. Somewhat contradicting the need for oxidant scavenging are previous observations that expression of SIRT3, a nutrient stress sensor and regulator of mitochondrial antioxidant defenses, is often suppressed in many primary tumors. We have discovered that this mitochondrial deacetylase is specifically upregulated in a context-dependent manner in cancer cells. SIRT3 activity and expression transiently increased following ovarian cancer cell detachment and in tumor cells derived from …

Thermal-Irradiance Behaviours Of Subtropical Intensive Green Roof In Winter And Landscape-Soil Design Implications, Louis S.H. Lee, C. Y. Jim

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. As urban green space, green roof has been increasingly installed in cities mainly for amenities, temperature regulation and energy conservation. Nevertheless, in subtropical urban setting and during winter, the thermal and radiation behaviours of green roofs, especially the intensive type, have remained poorly understood. This paper examined the effect of a woodland-type intensive green roof (IGR) on the roof-level microclimate by comparing temperature and radiation parameters against a reference bare roof (BR). In-situ microclimatic monitoring was conducted on an IGR and BR pair in subtropical Hong Kong throughout a winter. Using objective selection criteria, 30 sampled …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Grazed pastures and cultivated fields are significant sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in particular N2O emissions derived from fertilizer deposition and animal excreta. Net surface emissions rely on subsurface gas transfer controlled mainly by diffusion, expressed as the soil-gas diffusivity (Dp/Do). The value of Dp/Do is a function of soil air-filled porosity (e) and gaseous phase tortuosity (T), both of which vary with soil physical properties including soil texture and structure. Agricultural soils are often structurally aggregated and characterized by two distinct regions (inter- and intra-aggregated pores), however, such soils are subjected to frequent compaction and tillage resulting in …
