Micropolar Fluid Flow Between A Non-Porous Disk And A Porous Disk With Slip: Keller-Box Solution, Ashwini Bhat, Nagaraj N. Katagi
Open Access archive
In the present analysis, a steady, laminar, incompressible and two-dimensional micropolar fluid flow between a porous disk and a nonporous disk is considered. Similarity transformations are suitably applied to reduce the complex governing equations into a set of nonlinear boundary value problems with velocity slip conditions. An efficient finite difference technique called Keller-box method is employed to obtain the numerical solutions. The aim of this investigation is to study the influence of non-zero tangential slip velocity on velocity, microrotation profiles, and shear stress for different pertinent parameters. The results are then presented in the form of tables and graphs to …

Venepuncture is a painful but necessary prerequisite for safe administration of anaesthesia. Various pharmacological and non pharmacological methods have been attempted to decrease venepuncture pain. EMLA (eutectic mixture of 2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% prilocaine) cream facilitates the local absorption of both constituent drugs without organic solvents, resulting in high concentrations of lidocaine/prilocaine in the skin. Valsalva maneuver reduces the severity of pain associated with venepuncture, via stimulation of the vagus nerve. We conducted an observational study to evaluate the efficacy of Valsalva maneuver and EMLA cream in decreasing venepuncture pain. After obtaining approval from the Indian Ethics Committee, 129 American …

Nerve to mylohyoid is a branch of inferior alveolar nerve. It arises in the infratemporal fossa and runs in the mylohyoid groove of mandible to reach the submandibular region, where it supplies the anterior belly of digastric and mylohyoid muscles. Though sensory distribution of this nerve have been described, it is predominantly a motor nerve. Here, a rare intra-mandibular origin of nerve to mylohyoid has been presented. This nerve arose from the inferior alveolar nerve inside the mandible and came out to the submandibular region by passing through a small foramen present on the medial surface of the body of …

Histone H4 Dosage Modulates Dna Damage Response In The Pathogenic Yeast Candida Glabrata Via Homologous Recombination Pathway, Kundan Kumar, Romila Moirangthem, Rupinder Kaur
Open Access archive
Candida glabrata, a nosocomial fungal bloodstream pathogen, causes significant morbidity and mortality in hospitals worldwide. The ability to replicate in macrophages and survive a high level of oxidative stress contributes to its virulence in the mammalian host. However, the role of DNA repair and recombination mechanisms in its pathobiology is still being discovered. Here, we have characterized the response of C. glabrata to the methyl methanesulfonate (MMS)-induced DNA damage. We found that the MMS exposure triggered a significant downregulation of histone H4 transcript and protein levels, and that, the damaged DNA was repaired by the homologous recombination (HR) pathway. Consistently, …

The small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) protein is an important component of the post-translational protein modification systems in eukaryotic cells. It is known to modify hundreds of proteins involved in diverse cellular processes, ranging from nuclear pore dynamics to signal transduction pathways. Owing to its reversible nature, the SUMO-conjugation of proteins (SUMOylation) holds a prominent place among mechanisms that regulate the functions of a wide array of cellular proteins. The dysfunctional SUMOylation system has been associated with many human diseases, including neurodegenerative and autoimmune disorders. Furthermore, the non-pathogenic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has served as an excellent model to advance our understanding …

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major complication of diabetes with high morbidity and mortality rates. The pathogenesis of DFUs is governed by a complex milieu of environmental and host factors. The empirical treatment is initially based on wound severity since culturing and profiling the antibiotic sensitivity of woundassociated microbes is time-consuming. Hence, a thorough and rapid analysis of the microbial landscape is a major requirement toward devising evidence-based interventions. Toward this, 122 wound (100 diabetic and 22 nondiabetic) samples were sampled for their bacterial community structure using both culture-based and nextgeneration 16S rRNA-based metagenomics approach. Both the approaches showed …

Environmental stress, exhaustive industrialization and the use of chemicals in our daily lives contribute to increasing incidence of cancer and other pathologies. Although the cancer treatment has revolutionized in last 2–3 decades, shortcomings such as (i) extremely high cost of treatment, (ii) poor availability of drugs, (iii) severe side effects and (iv) emergence of drug resistance have prioritized the need of developing alternate natural, economic and welfare (NEW) therapeutics reagents. Identification and characterization of such anti-stress NEW drugs that not only limit the growth of cancer cells but also reprogram them to perform their specific functions are highly desired. We …

Achievement of equity in health requires development of a health system in which everyone has a fair opportunity to attain their full health potential. The current, large country-level variation in the reported incidence and prevalence of treated end-stage kidney disease indicates the existence of system-level inequities. Equitable implementation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) programs must address issues of availability, affordability, and acceptability. The major structural factors that impact equity in KRT in different countries are the organization of health systems, overall health care spending, funding and delivery models, and nature of KRT prioritization (transplantation, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, and conservative …
