Mutations cause abnormalities in protein structure, function and oligomerization. Different mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) protein cause its misfolding, loss of dimerization and aggravate its aggregation in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease. In this study, we report the mechanistic details of how a threonine-to-arginine mutation at the 54th position (T54R) of SOD1 results in destabilization of the dimer interface of SOD1T54R. Using computational and experimental methods, we show that the T54R mutation increases fluctuation of the mutation-harboring loop (R54-loop) of SOD1T54R. Fluctuation of this loop causes steric clashes that involve arginine-54 (R54) and other residues of SOD1T54R, resulting …

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a multifactorial malady and the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain. A hallmark of PD pathology is the formation of intracellular protein inclusions, termed Lewy bodies (LBs). Recent MS studies have shown that OTU deubiquitinase ubiquitin aldehyde-binding 1 (OTUB1), a deubiquitinating enzyme of the OTU family, is enriched together with α-synuclein in LBs from individuals with PD and is also present in amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. In the present study, using mammalian cell cultures and a PD mouse model, along with CD spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, …

President Donald Trump recently appointed Vice President Mike Pence to lead the government’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and control public statements by government health officials about the crisis. In the days since, health departments throughout the country have investigated potential cases, announced new cases and declared public health emergencies, all without the approval of the vice president. So who really is in charge of the outbreak response? As with most things in American government, the answer is complicated.

A Critical Review On The Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics In Centrifugal Turbomachines, Manjunath L. Nilugal, K. Vasudeva Karanth, N. Madhwesh

Centrifugal turbomachines are the popular type of power absorbing machines especially used in many industrial applications. In these devices the energy from the rotating impeller is transferred to the fluid to increase its pressure energy. The flow phenomena in these machines is very complex because of the presence of adverse pressure gradients in the flow passages. The level of complexity of turbomachinery flow fields is directly influenced by flow-path geometry and component blade geometry. Hence there is a dire need of advanced flow modelling techniques to understand and capture the fluid characteristics in these flow devices. To design such flow …

We are exposed to numerous viruses from our day-to-day interactions with other people all the time. However, our risk of being infected by a simple greeting usually isn’t in the forefront of our minds. The spread of COVID-19 has changed that. Conferences have banned handshakes, churches have changed their worship services, and even politicians have changed the way they greet each other. But what’s the risk in a simple hug or a handshake?

A Coward's Mother Does Not Weep: The Crisis Of Masculinity In Armenian Society, Nerses Kopalyan
Political Science Faculty Research
An Armenian man, by his very disposition, must be courageous, a tough guy, bound by honor, a prolific philanderer, an obedient son, a domineering father, a strict husband, and an altruistic friend. He is, in essence, a myth, constructed by his culture, extolled by its values, and in the end, he is doomed to fail. Why? Because he is a walking paradox. In fact, this paradox is superimposed upon him - the stature of Armenian masculinity [1] would have it no other way. He is Atlas, carrying the burden of everyone and everything around him. He is his father’s hope, …

Background: Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been identified as a potential cognitive strengthener associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It contains medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) which are absorbed and easily metabolized by the liver to form ketone bodies. Ketone bodies are converted to acetyl Co-A in the brain which then enters the citric acid cycle to provide ATP and also serves as precursors of acetylcholine in neurons. Sunflower oil (SO) contains poly unsaturated fatty acids which has both anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective actions. To compare the neuroprotective effects of VCO and SO on biochemical parameters involved in the cognitive dysfunction induced …

The current work intends to look into the effects of variable liquid properties on the magnetohydrodynamics of peristaltic flow exhibited by Jeffrey fluid through a compliant-walled channel. In order to make realistic approximations for the flow characteristics of blood, the channel is considered to be inclined and porous. Furthermore, convective boundary conditions and concentration slip have been employed in the analysis. The mathematical formulation is established on the grounds of low Reynolds number and long wavelength approximations. Perturbation solution is obtained for the resulting non-linear differential equations of momentum and energy for small values of variable viscosity and variable thermal …

Ethical issues relating to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) care are increasingly being discussed by clinicians and ethicists but are still infrequently considered at a policy level or in the education and training of health care professionals. In most lower-income countries, access to kidney replacement therapies such as dialysis is not universal, leading to overt or implicit rationing of resources and potential exclusion from care of those who are unable to sustain out-of-pocket payments. These circumstances create significant inequities in access to ESKD care within and between countries and impose emotional and moral burdens on patients, families, and health care workers …
