Gene Expression Of Chemically Enhanced Water-Accommodated Fraction (Cewaf) And Pathogen Exposed Red Snapper, Dana Wetzel
C-IMAGE data
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the gene expression of IGM in red snapper exposed to a chemically enhanced water-accommodated fraction (CEWAF) of south Louisiana crude oil and/or Vibrio anguillarum in a controlled laboratory setting. This was done with qPCR using 18S as a housekeeping gene. The dataset consists of details of exposure treatments, preparation of CEWAF, loading concentrations of Vibrio, and gene expression.

Background: Outdoor and early evening mosquito biting needs to be addressed if malaria elimination is to be achieved. While indoor-targeted interventions, such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying, remain essential, complementary approaches that tackle persisting outdoor transmission are urgently required to maximize the impact. Major malaria vectors principally bite human hosts around the feet and ankles. Consequently, this study investigated whether sandals treated with efficacious spatial repellents can protect against outdoor biting mosquitoes. Methodology: Sandals affixed with hessian bands measuring 48 cm2 treated with 0.06 g, 0.10 g and 0.15 g of transfluthrin were tested in large cage semi-field …

TITLE: Associations with Early Intervention Evaluation, Eligibility, and Services Engagement in a multi-site sample
Background: Parental concerns are usually highly predictive of child developmental delays; however, the relationship of parent concerns with Part C Early Intervention (EI) service use is unclear.
Objective: The goals of this project were to test the associations of parent concern presence, age of child at time of parent concerns, number of concerns, type of parental concern, and recency of parental concerns, with EI evaluation, eligibility, and services engagement after referral.
Design/Methods: We collected survey data on parent concerns, EI service use data, and family demographics …

Myosin is a major component of the sarcomeres of muscle, but its roles during muscle development are still relatively poorly understood. A new paper in Development investigates the function of a developmentally expressed myosin heavy chain isoform during mice myogenesis. We caught up with the paper's four co-first authors, Megha Agarwal, Akashi Sharma, Pankaj Kumar and Amit Kumar, and their supervisor Sam Mathew (Associate Professor in the Regional Centre for Biotechnology in Faridabad, India) to find out more about the project.

Womanpriest: Tradition And Transgression In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church, Jill Peterfeso
History
This book is openly available in digital formats thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
While some Catholics and even non-Catholics today are asking if priests are necessary, especially given the ongoing sex-abuse scandal, The Roman Catholic Womanpriests (RCWP) looks to reframe and reform Roman Catholic priesthood, starting with ordained women. Womanpriest is the first academic study of the RCWP movement. As an ethnography, Womanpriest analyzes the womenpriests’ actions and lived theologies in order to explore ongoing tensions in Roman Catholicism around gender and sexuality, priestly authority, and religious change.
In order to understand how womenpriests …

Strong epidemiological evidence supports the association between increased air pollution and the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the mechanism remains unclear. As an environmental air pollutant and benzo-a-pyrene (BP) metabolite, BP-1,6-quinone (BP-1,6-Q) is present in the particulate phase of air pollution. This study was undertaken to examine the redox activity of BP-1,6-Q and mechanisms associated with it using EA.hy926 endothelial cells. BP-1,6-Q at 0.01-1 μM significantly stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)·in intact cells and isolated mitochondria. Furthermore, BP-1,6-Q-induced ROS was altered by mitochondrial electron transport chain (METC) inhibitors of complex I (rotenone) and complex …

The response of plant species to environmental change, including climate, is based on phenotypic plasticity. Empirical research can help in understanding how invasive plants adapt to changing conditions for successful establishment. Our goal was to assess the effect of environment of origin and ecotypic variation on phenotypic response of native and invasive Phragmites australis using morphological and ecophysiological measurements. We established a common garden study using seeds collected from Southwest, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions that crossed longitudinal and latitudinal gradients of the US. Within and end of growing season measurements were made for morphological (e.g., height, leaf size, inflorescence) …

Background: Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy is reported as a prevalent public health problem. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate, in pregnant Canadian women, 1) vitamin D intake, 2) maternal and cord serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D] and maternal 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D], and 3) factors associated with maternal serum 25(OH)D. Methods: Women (n = 187; mean prepregnancy BMI 24.4 kg/m2, mean age 31 y) recruited to the Be Healthy in Pregnancy study provided fasting blood samples and nutrient intake at 12-17 (early) and 36-38 (late) weeks of gestation, and cord blood. Vitamin D intakes (Nutritionist Pro™) and serum 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D concentrations (LC-tandem MS) …
