The Whole Shabang, Bohui Liu

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

We all live on the same planet, but we look very different. Sometimes people can be criticized by their skin color or country they are from. People always define a person in a glance, simply through someone's appearance can be concluded that he or she has some characteristics. But in addition to skin color and language is different, everyone has their own personality, there are advantages and disadvantages. If we just see the appearance then to comment on a person is also irrational and unfair. In this theme, I represent that we have lots of differences outside but we are …

A new series of lanthanum(iii) complexes was synthesized using ap-anisidine-appended 1-hydroxy-2-acetonapthanone (3) Schiff base and characterizedviaspectroscopic methods. The ligand was synthesizedviasonication and the crystalline product was characterized using X-ray crystallography. The genotoxicity of the compound was assessed primarily by the bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test and thein vitromammalian chromosome aberration test; in both cases, the samarium complex5was found to be non-mutagenic. The anti-tumor activity of complexes45, and6was assayed against HeLa tumor cells and screened using the MTT assay. The IC50value of complex5was found to be 34 ± 1.2 μg mL−1and this compound exhibited superior activity towards the cells compared to4and6. …

Two Drug Epidemics In A Racist World: Comparing The Crack Crisis With The Opioid Epidemic, Téa Franco Apr 2020

Two Drug Epidemics In A Racist World: Comparing The Crack Crisis With The Opioid Epidemic, Téa Franco

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

America has faced two nationwide drug addictions: the crack crisis and the opioid epidemic. Despite several similarities in the spread of the addictions, the two garnered vastly different reactions from the media, society, and the government. It has become apparent that the reason for these different reactions is the race of those typically afflicted by each addiction. The crack crisis predominantly affected impoverished communities of color, whereas the opioid epidemic has affected more white Americans. Through journalistic methods including FOIA requests, government documents, interviews, and the gathering of primary and secondary sources, I have examined the way that race plays …

Sin City: How To Shut Down A City That Never Closes, David Schwartz Apr 2020

Sin City: How To Shut Down A City That Never Closes, David Schwartz

Executive Vice President & Provost Faculty Research

The casino closures that swept through the United States were entirely unprecedented. Never before had an entire hospitality industry been shut down overnight. While we don’t know when Americans will be free to gamble in casinos once more—or, indeed, what casino operations will look like when casinos reopen—the simple fact that casinos are closed gives us plenty to think about.

Experimental Investigation Of The Viscosity Of Pure And Gas-Saturated Crude Oil, N-Decane, Seawater And Deionized Water From 268 K To 323 K And From 1 Mpa To 16 Mpa, Michael Schlüter, Simeon Pesch Apr 2020

Experimental Investigation Of The Viscosity Of Pure And Gas-Saturated Crude Oil, N-Decane, Seawater And Deionized Water From 268 K To 323 K And From 1 Mpa To 16 Mpa, Michael Schlüter, Simeon Pesch

C-IMAGE data

The viscosity of pure and methane-saturated light sweet crude oil, as well as n-decane, artificial seawater and deionized (DI) water are determined at three to five different pressure levels between 1 MPa and 16 MPa and five different temperature levels between 268 K and 323 K, respectively. A newly designed high-pressure apparatus (capillary viscometer) to measure viscosities at these experimental conditions is employed. Louisiana Sweet Crude oil (LSC), pure methane, pure n-decane, artificial seawater and DI water are used for the measurements. Artificial seawater was prepared according to Kester et al. (1967).

Michigan Tech 3D Designs

Early in the spring of 2020 project contributors David Holden and John Schneiderhan began test printing a variety of open source Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/Covid related items that could help protect or prevent the spread of the emerging virus. With assistance from Pete Baril of the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) approval was obtained for the face shields to be used in the health care and nursing homes in the area. With the support and approval from university and library administration efforts were coordinated with Dr. Joshua Pearce and the students from the MOST lab to concentrate on the …

The unintended release of chemicals to the environment has led to global concern on water quality prompting widespread research on the occurrence of these compounds in water. While increasing information on organic micropollutants (OMPs) in European water resources is available, there is still limited information on the occurrence of OMPs in African water systems. In this study, a multi-residue analysis covering 428 chemicals using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was performed on water samples collected from 48 surface water sites within the Lake Victoria South Basin, Kenya. A total of 75 compounds including pharmaceuticals, personal care …

A study of the two-body decays B±→XccK±, where Placeholder refers to one charmonium state, is reported by the BABAR Collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb−1. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BABARmeasurements. Evidence is found for the decay B+→ X ( 3872) K +

at the Placeholder level. The absolute branching fraction Placeholder is measured for the first time. It follows that Placeholder, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance.
