Prevalence Of Trypanosomes Associated With Drug Resistance In Shimba Hills, Kwale County, Kenya, Benard W. Kulohoma, Sarah A.O. Wamwenje, Ibrahim I. Wangwe, Nicodemus Masila, Caroline K. Mirieri, Lillian Wambua

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Objective: Animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a life-threatening vector-borne disease, caused by trypanosome parasites, which are principally transmitted by tsetse flies. In Kenya, the prevalence of drug-resistant trypanosomes in endemic regions remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to establish AAT point prevalence, drug susceptibility of associated trypanosomes, and measure infectivity by multiple AAT mammalian hosts to tsetse flies in Shimba hills, a resource-poor region with high bovine trypanosomiasis prevalence and morbidity rates at the coast of Kenya. We collected tsetse flies using traps (1 Ngu and 2 biconical), and then sorted them on sex and species. Trypanosomes …

“Don’T Cry For Me, International Monetary Fund” How Politicians Sold Or Rebuked Imf-Loan Conditions In The 2019 Argentine Presidential Election, Chase Manson

Featured Research

This paper examines how politicians sell International Monetary Fund (IMF)-mandated economic reforms as a long term solution to constituents. IMF loans are difficult for citizens in the short term, and Argentina’s 2019 presidential election provides a natural experiment to examine how politicians get voters to accept short term costs for longer term gains. Two candidates for the presidency, President Macurio Macri and Alberto Fernandez, used different strategies in how they claimed they would, or would not, adopt conditions attached to Argentina’s 2017 IMF loan. By using a content analysis of politician speeches leading up to the October 2019 election, this …

All of the other files are measurements collected with six separate flux chambers over several sites at the following locations. The file name indicates the measurement location and the month and year the measurements were collected.

Transcriptomic Profiles Of Confirmed Pediatric Tuberculosis Patients And Household Contacts Identifies Active Tuberculosis, Infection, And Treatment Response Among Indian Children, Jeffrey A. Tornheim, Anil K. Madugundu, Mandar Paradkar, Kiyoshi F. Fukutani

Open Access archive

Background: Gene expression profiling is emerging as a tool for tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment response monitoring, but limited data specific to Indian children and incident tuberculosis infection (TBI) exist. Methods: Sixteen pediatric Indian tuberculosis cases were age- and sex-matched to 32 tuberculosis-exposed controls (13 developed incident TBI without subsequent active tuberculosis). Longitudinal samples were collected for ribonucleic acid sequencing. Differential expression analysis generated gene lists that identify tuberculosis diagnosis and tuberculosis treatment response. Data were compared with published gene lists. Population-specific risk score thresholds were calculated. Results: Seventy-one genes identified tuberculosis diagnosis and 25 treatment response. Within-group expression was partially …

An Empirical Study On The Use And Misuse Of Java 8 Streams, Raffi Khatchadourian, Yiming Tang, Mehdi Bagherzadeh, Baishakhi Ray

Publications and Research

Streaming APIs allow for big data processing of native data structures by providing MapReduce-like operations over these structures. However, unlike traditional big data systems, these data structures typically reside in shared memory accessed by multiple cores. Although popular, this emerging hybrid paradigm opens the door to possibly detrimental behavior, such as thread contention and bugs related to non-execution and non-determinism. This study explores the use and misuse of a popular streaming API, namely, Java 8 Streams. The focus is on how developers decide whether or not to run these operations sequentially or in parallel and bugs both specific and tangential …

Plurality Of Wave-Particle Duality, Varun S. Bhatta

Open Access archive

Wave-particle duality has been one of the guiding concepts in the development of modern physics. Even though duality has been extensively studied, the concept possessing multiple definitions has not received due attention. The article, to begin with, establishes the plurality associated with duality by highlighting the presence of multiple interpretations in the history of quantum mechanics and also demonstrates how prominent scientific pedagogic texts, drawing from these different threads of development, differ in the depiction of duality. This plurality has not been recognized for several reasons. Among these, the article criticizes the simplistic historical depiction of duality by showing how …

The Perception Of Intimate Partner Violence In Formal Reporting, Libby Freeman Apr 2020

The Perception Of Intimate Partner Violence In Formal Reporting, Libby Freeman

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a form of violence that is committed by someone that is a steady or serious partner. IPV includes multiple types of violence such as physical, sexual, or psychological abuse. 43% of women and 28% of men on college campuses experienced some form of IPV (Tsui & Santamaria, 2015). Rates of IPV have been studied quite frequently but the perception if it is a crime has not. Even with the lack of research, we believe that the perception of IPV being a crime will affect the rates of formal reporting. Data for this experiment was obtained …

Coronavirus Is Spreading Through Rural South’S High-Risk Population – Reopening Economies Will Make It Worse, Anne M. Cafer, Meagen Rosenthal

CREW News Archive

Despite the population’s vulnerability, Southern states have been a stronghold of resistance to federal and international recommendations around COVID-19 protective measures. Most of the states’ delays and refusals to enact “shelter-at-home” policies were tied to economic arguments. As University of Mississippi sociologists who work with rural communities on a range of resilience issues, especially health, we are concerned about the economic and health consequences of returning to business before the region is prepared to protect its residents.
