Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has broadly disrupted biomedical treatment and research including non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS). Moreover, the rapid onset of societal disruption and evolving regulatory restrictions may not have allowed for systematic planning of how clinical and research work may continue throughout the pandemic or be restarted as restrictions are abated. The urgency to provide and develop NIBS as an intervention for diverse neurological and mental health indications, and as a catalyst of fundamental brain research, is not dampened by the parallel efforts to address the most life-threatening aspects of COVID-19; rather in many cases the need for NIBS …

Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD) virus is one of India's severe arboviruses capable of causing prolonged debilitating disease. It has been expanding beyond its historical endemic locus at an alarming rate over the last two decades. The natural nidus of this zoonosis is located in the monsoon rainforest of the Western Ghats, India, which is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. Definitive reservoir hosts for KFD virus (KFDV) have yet to be delineated, and thus much of the infection ecology of this virus, and its consequent transmission dynamics, remains uncertain. Given its unique biogeographical context, identifying ecological parameters of …

A Rare Case Of Rubber Band Syndrome Of Wrist With Distal Radius And Ulna Fracture, Jayakrishnan K. Narayana Kurup, Hitesh H. Shah
Open Access archive
Rubber band syndrome (Dhaga Syndrome) is a very rare condition seen mostly among children in whom elastic bands worn around the wrist or forearm for religious or decorative purpose and its presence is overlooked by the parents. These forgotten bands slowly cuts through the skin and soft tissue underneath causing constriction and damage to the underlying structures. Circumferential constricting scar with discharging sinus is the cardinal feature. We report a case of rubber band syndrome in a 2 year old boy in which the constriction was severe enough to cause fracture of the distal radius and ulna.

Objective: Any control program for MRSA requires identifying the whole hospital reservoir. The likelihood of conveyance of MRSA may be higher in dental settings. Hence, the aim was to compare the nasal conveyance MRSA among dental professionals with varying levels of clinical exposure in a tertiary dental hospital in South India. Methods: A total of 81 volunteers were stratified based on the number of years of clinical exposure. The nasal swabs were subjected to catalase and coagulase tests as well as antibiotic susceptibility test. Chi- Square test was done to compare the different types of organisms isolated from dental professionals …

Background: A workplace is any location, permanent or temporary, where an employee performs work-related duty. Workplace violence includes threats, beating, stabbing, shooting, psychological trauma, suicides, near suicides, and harassment of any kind. We can see slow changes in attitude of care providers when they encounter violent behavior and incidents. It is a world-wide issue. Of late, in developing countries where out of pocket payment mode is the main healthcare financing option for a family, the medical professionals are being demonized as professional pick-pocketers by few sections of the society. Hence, we explored to garner opinion of the employees regarding what …

Management practices to improve soil health influence several ecosystem services including regulation of water flows, changes in soil biodiversity and greenhouse gases that are important at local, regional and global levels. Unfortunately, the primary focus in soil health management over the years has been increasing crop productivity and to some extent the associated economics and use efficiencies of inputs. There are now efforts to study the inter-relationship of associated ecosystem effects of soil health management considering that sustainable intensification cannot occur without conscious recognition of these associated non-provisioning ecosystem services. This review documents the current knowledge of ecosystem services for …

Glyoxal’S Impact On Dry Ammonium Salts: Fast And Reversible Surface Aerosol Browning (Raw Data), David O. De Haan Phd, Lelia N. Hawkins Phd, Margaret A. Tolbert Phd, Jean-François Doussin
Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship
Alpha-dicarbonyl compounds are believed to form brown carbon in the atmosphere via reactions with ammonium sulfate (AS) in cloud droplets and aqueous aerosol particles. In this work, brown carbon formation in AS and other aerosol particles was quantified as a function of relative humidity (RH) during exposure to gas-phase glyoxal (GX) in chamber experiments. Under dry conditions (RH < 5%), solid AS, AS/glycine, and methylammonium sulfate aerosol particles brown within minutes upon exposure to GX, while sodium sulfate particles do not. When GX concentrations decline, browning goes away, demonstrating that this dry browning process is reversible. Declines in aerosol albedo are found to be a function of [GX]2, and are consistent between AS and AS/glycine aerosol. Dry methylammonium sulfate aerosol browns 4´ more than dry AS aerosol, but deliquesced AS aerosol browns much less than dry AS aerosol. Optical measurements at 405, 450, and 530 nm provide an estimated Ångstrom absorbance coefficient of -16 ±4. This coefficient and the empirical relationship between GX and albedo are used to estimate an upper limit to global radiative forcing by brown carbon formed by 70 ppt GX reacting with AS (+7.6 ´10-5 W/m2). This quantity is < 1% of the total radiative forcing by secondary brown carbon, but occurs almost entirely in the ultraviolet range.
The zipped data files are in the following formats: Igor experiments (.pxp), Word documents (.docx), Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx), organized by experiment number. “Optical” files contain cavity attenuated phase shift (CAPS) extinction, scattering and albedo data; PILS/waveguide data (experiments 1,2, and 5 only); …

Toward Freedom: A Reading Of The National Memorial For Peace And Justice, Margaret Pless
Study the South
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice opened in Montgomery, Alabama in 2018 to commemorate the black victims of lynching in the United States. The memorial’s monuments are unique because they resist the static, status quo understandings of history that so many of our monuments perpetuate. The memorial invites visitors to face disturbing truths in the hope of fostering reconciliation. Will it help us remember and reconcile as a nation? Montgomery is home to other monuments that undermine the history the memorial presents.

Music In Times Of Isolation: Learning From Chilean Political Prisoners, Nuria Bonet
School of Art, Design and Architecture
In difficult times, we often look previous generations that have lived through similar situations. As we currently find ourselves in globally similar situations of confinement and isolation, we can find solace and survival strategies in others’ experiences. Music is one of our responses to hardship as it helps us endure and understand our predicament. Examples of composers responding to pandemics are vast; Cooke’s 15th-century hymn Stella celi about the Black Plague, Bach’s cantata No. 25 Es ist nicht Gesundes and meinem Leibe and Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1 about the HIV/AIDS epidemic are only a few examples [1].In the current Covid-19 …
