Biological Sciences Data
In migratory birds, among- and within-species heterogeneity in response to climate change may be attributed to differences in migration distance and, consequently, environmental cues that affect timing of arrival at breeding grounds. We used eBird observations and a within-species comparative approach to examine whether migration distance (with latitude as a proxy) and climate explain spring arrival dates in a raptor species with a widespread distribution and diverse migration strategies, the American Kestrel Falco sparverius. We found an interactive effect between latitude and spring minimum temperatures on arrival dates, where at lower latitudes (short-distance migrants) kestrels arrived earlier in warmer springs …

York Professor To Lead United Nations Research Roadmap For Covid-19 Recovery, Yfile
Ovations
COVID-19 has had a crushing socio-economic impact, especially for marginalized populations and people with complex needs who have experienced the brunt of the virus. To build back better post-COVID-19 and make sure no one is left behind, York University Professor Steven Hoffman has been chosen to lead a United Nations effort to develop a research roadmap for the post-pandemic recovery period.

Multilingualism And Acculturation In Catalonia: An Analysis Of Muslim Immigrant Women, Farah Ali
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Owing to the continuous influx of immigration in Catalonia, multilingualism has become the bedrock of this region. Still, Catalan and Spanish remain the dominant languages of everyday communication and immigrants are faced with the challenge of adopting both Spanish and Catalan linguistic identities. This dual acculturation process can span across generations and can be impacted by a variety of sociocultural factors. Additionally, motivation to acculturate can be rooted in individuals’ own complex identities that are constructed in different sociocultural contexts, a connection that Norton (2000) has conceptualized as “investment.” This study examines Muslim immigrant women’s investment in Spanish and Catalan, …

Background: This study examined access to health care in an occupational context in an urban city of India. Many people migrate from rural areas to cities, often across Indian states, for employment prospects. The purpose of the study is to explore the barriers to accessing health care among a vulnerable group - internal migrants working in the construction sector in Manipal, Karnataka. Understanding the lay workers' accounts of access to health services can help to comprehend the diversity of factors that hinder access to health care. Methods: Individual semi-structured interviews involving 15 migrant construction workers were conducted. The study applied …

C-IMAGE data
This dataset contains hepatobiliary concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gafftopsail catfish (Bagre marinus) collected aboard multiple research and fishing vessels (R/V Weatherbird II, NCF, FSU, Texas A&M, MSU, GCRL) in the Gulf of Mexico in September 2015, and April to September 2017. Untreated bile PAHs were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-F) methodology. Liver PAHs were extracted from homogenized liver tissues using QuEChERS EMR (Agilent Technologies, Bond Elut) and confirmed and quantified using an Agilent’s 7890B gas chromatograph (GC) coupled to a 7010 tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operating in multiple reactions mode (MRM). Mutations In Srebf1, Encoding Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Transcription Factor 1, Cause Autosomal-Dominant Ifap Syndrome, Huijun Wang, Aytaj Humbatova, Yuanxiang Liu, Wen Qin
Open Access archive
IFAP syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by ichthyosis follicularis, atrichia, and photophobia. Previous research found that mutations in MBTPS2, encoding site-2-protease (S2P), underlie X-linked IFAP syndrome. The present report describes the identification via whole-exome sequencing of three heterozygous mutations in SREBF1 in 11 unrelated, ethnically diverse individuals with autosomal-dominant IFAP syndrome. SREBF1 encodes sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), which promotes the transcription of lipogenes involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and cholesterols. This process requires cleavage of SREBP1 by site-1-protease (S1P) and S2P and subsequent translocation into the nucleus where it binds to sterol regulatory elements …

Objective: Mutualism between endogenous viruses and eukaryotes is still poorly understood. Several endogenous double-stranded polydnaviruses, bracoviruses, homologous to those present in parasitic braconid wasp genomes were detected in the tsetse fly (Glossina morsitans morsitans). This is peculiar since tsetse flies do not share a reproductive lifestyle similar to wasps, but deliver fully developed larvae that pupate within minutes of exiting their mothers. The objective of this study is to investigate genomic distribution of bracoviral sequences in five tsetse fly species and the housefly, and examine its value as a potential vector control strategy target point. We use comparative genomics to …

Lifestyle, Oxidative Stress, And Antioxidants: Back And Forth In The Pathophysiology Of Chronic Diseases, Mehdi Sharifi-Rad, Nanjangud V. Anil Kumar, Paolo Zucca, Elena Maria Varoni

Oxidative stress plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Long term exposure to increased levels of pro-oxidant factors can cause structural defects at a mitochondrial DNA level, as well as functional alteration of several enzymes and cellular structures leading to aberrations in gene expression. The modern lifestyle associated with processed food, exposure to a wide range of chemicals and lack of exercise plays an important role in oxidative stress induction. However, the use of medicinal plants with antioxidant properties has been exploited for their ability to treat or …

Wave Attenuation Toolbox (Watte), Madeline Foster-Martinez, Scott C. Hagen
Civil Engineering Datasets
WATTE is an ArcGIS toolbox. Its function is to estimate and map wave attenuation along coastlines. Wave attenuation is an important ecosystem service of natural coastal ecosystems. The current form of WATTE models wave attenuation as an exponential decay, which is common for marsh coastlines. WATTE calculates wave height change along 1-D transects and interpolates between the transects to produce estimates of wave attenuation and map areas of wave exposure. Users can customize the attributes of the transects and the exponential decay constants used for the calculation. WATTE can be applied to any raster with land type classification, allowing for …
