This study proposes a minimal modeling magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG) methodology for assessing spatiotemporal and kinematic measures of functional fitness exercises. Thirteen healthy persons performed repetitions of the squat, box squat, sandbag pickup, shuffle-walk, and bear crawl. Sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle range of motion (ROM) and stride length, stride time, and stance time measures were compared for the MARG method and an optical motion capture (OMC) system. The root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and Bland–Altman plots and limits of agreement were used to assess agreement between methods. Hip and knee ROM …

This paper explores how the material and imaginary aspects of emotions embedded in cherished possessions contribute to home-making practices at the scale of a formal care setting for older adults in a non-western context. This study examines three types of care homes with residents from different socioeconomic backgrounds in the state of Kerala, India. Data include in-depth interviews, observations, and photography with older adults in care homes. We identify three types of cherished possessions that are embodied with different roles and emotional qualities: first, religious artifacts that signify a sense of security in day-to-day life; second, possessions embedded with memories …

In the proposed paper, a uniplanar asymmetric coplanar strip (ACS) fed antenna with closed V-shaped radiating patch of size printed on FR4 substrate with loss tangent (=0.02, height (h)=1.6mm, and dielectric constant of 4.4 covering WiMAX, X-band and WLAN applications is presented. The closed V-shaped radiating patch is formed by joning two rectangular stubs. The remaining radiating part is obtained by adding rectangular strips to feed to obtained multiband operation. The advantage of this structure is that it forms simple configuration as well as helps the antenna attaining three distinict useful frequency band with good impedance matching for S11<-10 dB criteria. The proposed antenna operates at 3.1 (WiMAX), 5.0 (WLAN) and 9.9 (X-band) GHz in simulation. Under measurement the proposed antenna shows multiband phenomenon at 3.2, 5.3 and 9.7 GHz, respectively. The antenna exhibits simulated gain of 2.51, 1.18 and 1.96 dB at 3.1, 5.0 and 9.9 GHz. The key parameters of the antenna like length and width of the multi-branched strips are optimized to get the multiband operation. The evolution and optimization process is dealt in detail with the help of S11, VSWR, current distributions, radiation patterns and gain.

Background: Our study aimed to identify a host cytokine biosignature that could distinguish childhood tuberculosis (TB) from other respiratory diseases (OD). Methods: Cytokine responses in prospectively recruited children with symptoms suggestive of TB were measured in whole blood assay supernatants, harvested after overnight incubation, using a Luminex platform. We used logistic regression models with Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) penalty to identify the optimal biosignature associated with confirmed TB disease in the training set. We subsequently assessed its performance in the test set. Findings: Of the 431 children included in the study, 44 had bacteriologically confirmed TB, 60 …

Background: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors represent the first-line therapy regimen for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Most of these inhibitors target the ATP-site to stop the aggressive development of NSCLC. Stabilization of the ATP-binding on EGFR is difficult due to autophosphorylation of the EGFR domain. This leads to activation of nonintrinsic influence of the tumor microenvironment and expression of anti-apoptotic pathways and drug resistance. Methods: The NSCLC related literature search was carried out using online databases such as Scopus, Web of Sciences, PubMed, Protein Data Bank and UniPort for the last ten years and selected articles are …

Longitudinal research on training and dietary practices of natural powerlifters is limited. This study investigated the effect of phases of training on physical and physiological parameters in male natural powerlifters. Nine participants completed testing at two time points: (i) preparatory phase (~3 months prior to a major competition) and (ii) competition phase (1–2 weeks from a major competition). No significant changes between training phases were found for muscle strength and power. A trend for significance was found for decreased muscle endurance of the lower body (−24.4%, p = 0.08). A significant increase in leg lean mass was found at the …

Management practices such as tillage, crop rotation, irrigation, organic and inorganic inputs application are known to influence diversity and function of soil microbial populations. In this study, we investigated the effect of conventional versus organic farming systems at low and high input levels on structure and diversity of prokaryotic microbial communities. Soil samples were collected from the ongoing long-term farming system comparison trials established in 2007 at Chuka and Thika in Kenya. Physicochemical parameters for each sample were analyzed. Total DNA and RNA amplicons of variable region (V4-V7) of the 16S rRNA gene were generated on an Illumina platform using …

In this randomized controlled single-center clinical trial on 96 adult patients with parallel experimental groups (n = 48), the effects of washing a dentin/pulp wound in non-symptomatic teeth with extremely deep caries and pulpal exposure were compared between a 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution and a chemically-inert physiological saline control solution. After the allocated wound lavage, the pulps were capped with a mineral trioxide aggregate, covered by a glass-ionomer/resin liner, and the teeth were immediately restored with a resin-bonded-composite. In this first report, the early events were analyzed: postoperative discomfort (on an NRS-11 scale) at day-3 and-7 after intervention, and …

We report our investigations on the thermal stability of the intermediate homologue of cholesteryl ester, cholesteryl nonanoate (ChN) at the air-water (A-W) and air-solid (A-S) interfaces. Surface manometry studies on ChN at the A-W interface reveal that the limiting area and the collapse pressure of the film decrease with an increase in the temperature. Brewster angle microscopy studies show the co-existing gas (G) and the homogeneous phase (bilayer) that, with compression, transforms to a bilayer phase followed by a collapse to circular domains. These collapsed circular domains (CCDs) coarsen and nucleate to form 3D structures, and their evolution and growth …

Neural circuitry for mating and reproduction resides within the terminal segments of central nervous system (CNS) which express Hox paralogous group 9–13 (in vertebrates) or Abdominal-B (Abd-B) in Drosophila. Terminal neuroblasts (NBs) in A8-A10 segments of Drosophila larval CNS are subdivided into two groups based on expression of transcription factor Doublesex (Dsx). While the sex specific fate of Dsx-positive NBs is well investigated, the fate of Dsx-negative NBs is not known so far. Our studies with Dsx-negative NBs suggests that these cells, like their abdominal counterparts (in A3-A7 segments) use Hox, Grainyhead (Grh) and Notch to undergo cell death during …
