One of the crucial challenges that any present-day general dentist confronts is the treatment determination between extracting a tooth and placement of a dental implant or by conserving the natural tooth with an interdisciplinary approach. The rising concern amongst the patients towards preserving their dentition has driven the clinicians towards providing treatment options that are more appropriate and conservative and at the same time does not hamper its functional needs. This report highlights one such way of preserving the periodontally compromised natural tooth with just resecting the diseased part of it and also conserving the proprioceptive capacity of the tooth. …

Human Endogenous Retrovirus W Envelope (HERV-W ENV) mRNA or protein can be found in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and exocrine pancreas of patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Further, previous observations have shown an association between enteroviral infection and development of T1D; specifically, coxsackievirus-B (CV-B) has been detected in the blood and pancreas of patients with T1D. Notably, viruses can activate HERV-W expression. Hence, we evaluated the effect of CV-B4 infection on HERV-W ENV mRNA expression. Primary human pancreatic ductal cells were obtained from five brain-dead donors. In the pancreatic cells of three donors, the HERV-W ENV mRNA level …

Community-acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) is the dominant form of AKI encountered in developing countries in Asia. Economic disparities, variations in access to health care services, geographic conditions, environmental risk factors, and sociocultural circumstances shape the causes and outcomes of CA-AKI. Infections, drugs, plant and chemical toxins, envenomations, and obstetric complications are common causes of CA-AKI. Previously healthy young individuals who often work outdoors in fields or farms are exposed to a wide variety of work-related or environmental risk factors for CA-AKI. Improving disease definitions, better data, and evolving host–pathogen interactions have changed disease descriptions and presentations over the past …

Humans have lived alongside and interacted with wild animals throughout evolutionary history. Even though wild animals can damage property, or injure humans and domesticated animals, not all interactions between humans and wildlife are negative. Yet, research has tended to focus disproportionately on negative interactions leading to negative outcomes, labelling this human-wildlife conflict. Studies have identified several factors, ranging from gender, religion, socio-economics and literacy, which influence people's responses to wildlife. We used the ISI Web of Knowledge database to assess quantitatively how human-wildlife interactions are framed in the scientific literature and to understand the hypotheses that have been invoked to …

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors inhibitor of differentiation 1 (Id1) and inhibitor of differentiation 3 (Id3) (referred to as Id) have an important role in maintaining the cancer stem cell (CSC) phenotype in the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype. In this study, we aimed to understand the molecular mechanism underlying Id control of CSC phenotype and exploit it for therapeutic purposes. We used two different TNBC tumor models marked by either Id depletion or Id1 expression in order to identify Id targets using a combinatorial analysis of RNA sequencing and microarray data. Phenotypically, Id protein depletion leads to cell …

Previously, we found that in glucose-limited Saccharomyces cerevisiae colonies, metabolic constraints drive cells into groups exhibiting gluconeogenic or glycolytic states. In that study, threshold amounts of trehalose-a limiting, produced carbon-resource, controls the emergence and self-organization of cells exhibiting the glycolytic state, serving as a carbon source that fuels glycolysis (Varahan et al., 2019). We now discover that the plasticity of use of a non-limiting resource, aspartate, controls both resource production and the emergence of heterogeneous cell states, based on differential metabolic budgeting. In gluconeogenic cells, aspartate is a carbon source for trehalose production, while in glycolytic cells using trehalose for …

The burden of childhood stunting in Tanzania is persistently high, even in high food-producing regions. This calls for a paradigm shift in Child Growth Monitoring (CGM) to a multi-dimensional approach that also includes the contextual information of an individual child and her/his caregivers. To contribute to the further development of CGM to reflect local contexts, we engaged the Capability Framework for Child Growth (CFCG) to identify maternal capabilities for ensuring healthy child growth. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in Southeastern Tanzania using in-depth interviews, key informant interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions with caregivers for under-fives. Three maternal capabilities for …

We report a case of a young male from Udupi, Karnataka, presenting with features of bilateral non-granulomatous anterior uveitis with mild vitritis. There was a history of fever and myalgia a month before ocular features, which was partially treated. He also gave a history of being actively involved in the flood relief work in the district, before the onset of fever. This prompted an evaluation of leptospirosis, which came positive. The possibility of leptospira uveitis needs to be considered, especially in cases of non-granulomatous uveitis after floods in areas endemic for leptospirosis, which may otherwise be wrongly labeled idiopathic.

Atherosclerosis is the most common cardiovascular disease (CVD) causing increased morbidity. Although atherosclerosis is a general disease involving several factors, it preferentially affects the wall of the vessel bifurcations. The use of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques has the potential to shed more light in the further understanding of the causes of the disease and perhaps in its early diagnosis. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) study was carried out for a patient specific carotid artery. By considering physiological conditions, first the normal and then with hypertension disease, haemodynamic parameters were evaluated to better understand …

This study investigates the tension-tension fatigue behaviour of glass/epoxy quasi-isotropic laminates. Constant amplitude tension-tension fatigue tests were performed at different stress level at a stress ratio, R = 0.1 and at a frequency of 3 Hz. The damage growth in the material was characterized by evaluating the degradation in stiffness. A phenomenological cumulative stiffness degradation based damage model was used to predict the damage development in the material. It was observed that, in the initial fatigue loading cycle, the material exhibited rapid reduction in stiffness and maintained a constant rate of degradation until failure.

Pollination services and honeybee health in general are important in the African savannahs particularly to farmers who often rely on honeybee products as a supplementary source of income. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the floral cycle, abundance and spatial distribution of melliferous plants in the African savannah landscapes. Furthermore, placement of apiaries in the landscapes could benefit from information on spatiotemporal patterns of flowering plants, by optimising honeybees’ foraging behaviours, which could improve apiary productivity. This study sought to assess the suitability of simulated multispectral data for mapping melliferous (flowering) plants in the African savannahs. Bi-temporal AISA Eagle hyperspectral …
