Highly Branched Polymers Based On Poly(Amino Acid)S For Biomedical Application, Marisa Thompson, Carmen Scholz
PRC-Affiliated Research
Polymers consisting of amino acid building blocks continue to receive consideration for biomedical applications. Since poly(amino acid)s are built from natural amino acids, the same building blocks proteins are made of, they are biocompatible, biodegradable and their degradation products are metabolizable. Some amino acids display a unique asymmetrical AB2 structure, which facilitates their ability to form branched structures. This review compares the three forms of highly branched polymeric structures: structurally highly organized dendrimers, dendrigrafts and the less organized, but readily synthesizable hyperbranched polymers. Their syntheses are reviewed and compared, methods of synthesis modulations are considered and variations on their traditional …

Parallelizing Packet Processing In Container Overlay Networks, Jiaxin Lei, Manish Munikar, Kun Suo, Hui Lu, Jia Rao
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
Container networking, which provides connectivity among containers on multiple hosts, is crucial to building and scaling container-based microservices. While overlay networks are widely adopted in production systems, they cause significant performance degradation in both throughput and latency compared to physical networks. This paper seeks to understand the bottlenecks of in-kernel networking when running container overlay networks. Through profiling and code analysis, we find that a prolonged data path, due to packet transformation in overlay networks, is the culprit of performance loss. Furthermore, existing scaling techniques in the Linux network stack are ineffective for parallelizing the prolonged data path of a …

Chameleondb: A Key-Value Store For Optane Persistent Memory, Wenhui Zhang, Xingsheng Zhao, Song Jiang, Hong Jiang
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
The emergence of Intel’s Optane DC persistent memory (Optane Pmem) draws much interest in building persistent key-value (KV) stores to take advantage of its high throughput and low latency. A major challenge in the efforts stems from the fact that Optane Pmem is essentially a hybrid storage device with two distinct properties. On one hand, it is a high-speed byte-addressable device similar to DRAM. On the other hand, the write to the Optane media is conducted at the unit of 256 bytes, much like a block storage device. Existing KV store designs for persistent memory do not take into account …

Homology Of A Maturase To The Heart Of The Nuclear Spliceosome, Isabella Becker
Homology Of A Maturase To The Heart Of The Nuclear Spliceosome, Isabella Becker
Undergraduate Research Competition
Structural and biochemical evidence links group II introns as evolutionary precursors of nuclear introns. The spliceosome binds and excises nuclear introns. Maturases are prokaryotic enzymes that aid group II intron excision. The evolutionary ties between group II introns and nuclear introns suggest a possible link between maturases and the nuclear spliceosome. Structural analysis of Prp8, a core enzyme of the nuclear spliceosome has demonstrated this link and revealed similarity to prokaryotic maturases. Maturase K (MatK) is a chloroplast group II intron maturase. Unlike prokaryotic maturases, MatK binds to multiple intron substrates suggesting possible evolution akin to the nuclear spliceosome machinery. …

Kairomones are chemical signals that mediate interspecific interactions beneficial to organisms that detect the cues. These attractants can be individual compounds or mixtures of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) or herbivore chemicals such as pheromones, i.e., chemicals mediating intraspecific communication between herbivores. Natural enemies eavesdrop on kairomones during their foraging behaviour, i.e., location of oviposition sites and feeding resources in nature. Kairomone mixtures are likely to elicit stronger olfactory responses in natural enemies than single kairomones. Kairomone-based lures are used to enhance biological control strategies via the attraction and retention of natural enemies to reduce insect pest populations and crop damage …

Session 1f Mollusks As Ecological Indicators: Environmental Sustainable Development In Slovakia, Allison Uri, Cole Manning, Alex Burks
The Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education
The mollusks in Slovakia can be used as an ecological indicator connecting the UN SDGs of zero hunger, clean water & sanitation, climate action, and life on land. This investigation into Slovakia’s sustainability efforts examines the preventions for biodiversity loss, increased extreme weather, change of ecosystems, and expanding equity. Mollusks connect to ecological conservation because human activity is altering the landscape and their historical range has changed. Equity connects to mollusks through generating solutions in restructuring financial systems, empowering impoverished communities, and cleaning up natural environments. Studying the DPSIR of mollusks can be a tool for a more sustainable future.
