Amplification Of Hidden Periodic Motions In 3d Videos, Thomas Boccuto, Seraiah Kutai, Kristen Mosley, Samuel Kirk

Mathematics Summer Fellows

Ordinary videos capture a surprising amount of hidden, visually imperceptible information. For instance, videos of peoples' faces may capture color changes in the skin and artery motion from heartbeats, while videos of mechanical systems can capture subtle vibrations indicating imminent failure. Algorithms can extract and exaggerate these signals for visualization on top of the original videos. In particular, Eulerian magnification algorithms sidestep the need to track hidden motions directly and instead devise multiscale bandpass filters to amplify signals in local spatial regions. In this work, we extend these techniques beyond color videos to geometric video data captured by 3D depth …

Damselfish Species Density Estimates Obtained From Remotely Operated Vehicle (Rov) Footage From Natural And Artificial Reef Sites In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico From 2018-05-14 To 2019-11-21, Joseph Tarnecki

C-IMAGE data

Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) footage was used to obtain density (fish per 100m2) estimates of damselfish observed on natural and artificial reef sites located in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 2018-05-14 to 2019-11-21 aboard charter fishing vessels. The non-native regal demoiselle was first sighted on artificial reefs in August 2018. Dataset includes estimated densities of regals along with a suite of other damselfish to document their expansion onto northern Gulf of Mexico reef sites.

Kinematic Analysis Of Gait In An Underwater Treadmill Using Land-Based Vicon T 40s Motion Capture Cameras Arranged Externally, Shreyas L. Raghu, Ryan T. Conners, Chang-Kwon Kang, David B. Landrum, Paul N. Whitehead Jul 2021

Kinematic Analysis Of Gait In An Underwater Treadmill Using Land-Based Vicon T 40s Motion Capture Cameras Arranged Externally, Shreyas L. Raghu, Ryan T. Conners, Chang-Kwon Kang, David B. Landrum, Paul N. Whitehead

PRC-Affiliated Research

Aquatic therapy for rehabilitation can be performed in a variety of environments, which can vary from a traditional swimming pool to a self-contained underwater treadmill. While kinematic analysis has been performed in large volume swimming pools using specific underwater motion capture systems, researchers may only have access to a land-based motion-capture system, which is not waterproof. Additionally, underwater motion capture systems may not fit within the confines of a smaller underwater treadmill. Thus, the purpose of this study was to design and analyze methodology to quantify lower limb kinematics during an aquatic treadmill session, using a land-based motion capture system. …

Resettlement Capacity Assessments For Climate Induced Displacements: Evidence From Ethiopia, Solomon Zena Walelign, Susan L. Cutter, Paivi Lujala Jul 2021

Resettlement Capacity Assessments For Climate Induced Displacements: Evidence From Ethiopia, Solomon Zena Walelign, Susan L. Cutter, Paivi Lujala

Faculty Publications

Climate change migration is increasing and necessitates a re-examination of resettlement planning and processes. Although evidence-based selection of host places would improve climate change resettlement outcomes, few methods for the selection of host communities exist. Consequently, the information base on which most resettlement programs select a host place is often inadequate. This article proposes an empirical methodology to assess resettlement capacity. The methodology uses a hierarchical aggregation approach, where resettlement capacity indicator values are aggregated first into sub-dimension resettlement capacity scores, then further into dimension resettlement capacity scores, and finally into an overall resettlement capacity index. The aggregation allows for …

A Practical Guide To The Impractical Life: Contemporary Morality And The Desert Monastics, John Goodhew Jul 2021

A Practical Guide To The Impractical Life: Contemporary Morality And The Desert Monastics, John Goodhew

Honors Projects

In the fourth and fifth centuries CE, the monastic movement of Christian individuals to remote and deserted places coincided with Christianity’s increasing popularity and legality in the Roman hegemony of the Mediterranean. The very surprisingness of the movement reveals that the monastics sought something even, and especially, Christian society could not provide. While seeking hēsychia, or stillness, in the deserts, the monks developed a system of morality. This system, as expressed in the collections of stories and the codifications which have come down to us, provides perspective on the dominant moral systems introduced in the modern era. Drawing on Biblical …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Enset (Ensete ventricosum), is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the family Musaceae, along with banana and plantain. Despite wild populations occurring in eastern, central and southern Africa, it is only in Ethiopia that the crop has been domesticated, where it is culturally and agriculturally symbolic as a food security crop. Although an under-researched orphan crop, enset serves as a staple food for about 20% of the Ethiopian population, comprising more than 20 million people, demonstrating its value in the country. Similar to banana and plantain, enset is heavily affected by plant-parasitic nematodes, with recent studies indicating record levels of …

Dataset For Reporting Quality In Math Meta-Analyses For Students With Or At Risk Of Disabilities, Gena Nelson, Soyoung Park, Tasia Brafford, Nicole Heller, Angela Crawford

Early and Special Education Datasets

The purpose of the systematic review was to evaluate reporting quality in meta-analyses focused on mathematics interventions for students with or at risk of disabilities. To identify meta-analyses for inclusion, we considered peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2020; we searched five education-focused electronic databases, scanned the table of contents of six special education journals, reviewed the curriculum vitae of researchers who frequently publish meta-analyses in mathematics and special education, and scanned the reference lists of meta-analyses that met inclusion criteria. To be included in this systematic review, meta-analyses must have reported on the effectiveness of mathematics-focused interventions, provided a …
