Dataset For Dynamic Mass Loss From Greenland's Peripheral Glaciers, Katherine Bollen, Ellyn Enderlin, Rebecca Muhlheim Aug 2021

Dataset For Dynamic Mass Loss From Greenland's Peripheral Glaciers, Katherine Bollen, Ellyn Enderlin, Rebecca Muhlheim

Geosciences Research Data

While global glacier mass balance has decreased rapidly over the last two decades, mass loss has been greatest in regions with marine-terminating glaciers. In Greenland, peripheral glaciers and ice caps (GICs) cover only ~5% of Greenland’s area but contributed ~14-20% of the island’s ice mass loss between 2003-2008. Although Greenland GIC’s mass loss due to surface meltwater runoff have been estimated using atmospheric models, mass loss due to changes in ice discharge into surrounding ocean basins (i.e., dynamic mass loss) remains unquantified. Here, we use the flux gate method to estimate discharge from Greenland’s 585 marine-terminating peripheral glaciers and compute …

Chiu, Wendi Zhang, Ziyu Yin, Jian Han, Jibin Yang, Robert Sigler, Shaomin Tian, Hong Zhu, Y R. Li, Jianjun Wei, Xianwen Yi, Zhenquan Jia

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Oxidized low density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) is a known biomarker of inflammation and atherosclerosis, a leading cause of death worldwide. As a new class of nanomaterials, carbon nanodots (CNDs) are widely used in bioimaging, diagnostics, and drug delivery. However, there is no current report on how these CNDs affect the cardiovascular system, particularly their potential in mediating endothelial inflammatory dysfunction. This study examined effects of CNDs on Ox-LDL-mediated endothelial dysfunction. CNDs significantly inhibited Ox-LDL-mediated adhesion of monocytes to human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1), in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1). CNDs significantly inhibited Ox-LDL-mediated adhesion of monocytes to endothelial cells, which is …

Pediatric Cervical Spine Fracture Case Report: Best Practice To Delay Transition To Rear-Facing Restraint, Christopher Stolworthy, Jonathan Hu, Neil Merritt Aug 2021

Pediatric Cervical Spine Fracture Case Report: Best Practice To Delay Transition To Rear-Facing Restraint, Christopher Stolworthy, Jonathan Hu, Neil Merritt

Paediatrics Publications

Pediatric physicians and motor vehicle safety experts have been advocating for change in child passenger restraint practices for decades. As professional recommendations evolve to support extended rear-facing restraint, actual practices remain disparate. We report a case of pediatric cervical spine fracture due to motor vehicle collision, an uncommon, yet predictable, pattern of injury for which prevention education is undoubtedly preferable to managing the consequences of premature forward-facing in vulnerable pediatric patients. Currently, 9 kg is a minimum legal standard for forward-facing child restraint system use in Ontario, rather than a recommended transition time. We advise that parents should be counselled …

Data For "Uncertainty And Reputation Effects In Credence Goods Markets", Eric Schniter, J. Dustin Tracy, Vojtěch Zíka

ESI Data Sets

Credence-goods experiments have focused on stylized settings in which experts can perfectly identify the buyer’s best option and that option works without fail. However, in nature credence goods involve uncertainties that complicate assessing the quality of service and advice. We introduce two sources of uncertainty into a credence goods experiment. The first is diagnostic uncertainty; experts receive a noisy signal of buyer type so might make an ‘honest’ mistake when advising what is in buyers’ best interests. The second is service uncertainty; the services available to the buyer do not always work. Both sources of uncertainty make detection of expert …

Development Of Cost-Effective High-Modulus Asphalt Concrete (Hmac) Mixtures Using Crumb Rubber And Local Construction Materials In Louisiana, Momen R. Mousa, Marwa Hassan, Ibrahim A.I.E Elnaml

Data

One of the emerging solutions to enhance the durability of asphalt pavements is the use of a French asphalt mix known as “High-Modulus Asphalt Concrete (HMAC).” This mix uses a hard asphalt binder, high binder content (about 6%), and low air voids content as compared to Superpave mixtures. The key objective of this study was to develop a cost-effective HMAC mixture using crumb rubber and local materials in Louisiana. To achieve this objective, four HMAC mixtures were prepared using two asphalt binders (PG 82-22 and PG 76-22 plus 10% crumb rubber) and two Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) contents (20% and …

Evaluation Of Sustainable And Environmentally Friendly Stabilization Of Cohesionless Sandy Soil For Transportation Infrastructure, Miladin Radovic, Anand Puppala, Surya Sarat Chandra Congress, Jungyeon Jang, Oscar Huang

Data

Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is generally used to stabilize cohesionless sandy soils that are often found in coastal areas. Due to its high carbon footprint, many studies are being conducted to identify a suitable green alternative for stabilizing cohesionless soils. Previous studies have shown that partially replacing OPC with waste materials such as nano-silica and coal waste reduces the overall carbon footprint without significantly impacting the performance. Geopolymer (GP) received a lot of attention in the past few decades owing to its similar properties to that of OPC yet with a lower carbon footprint. This study investigated the feasibility of …

Residual Life And Reliability Assessment Of Underground Rc Sanitary Sewer Pipelines Under Uncertainty, Himan Hojat Jalali, Moein Ebrahimi Aug 2021

Residual Life And Reliability Assessment Of Underground Rc Sanitary Sewer Pipelines Under Uncertainty, Himan Hojat Jalali, Moein Ebrahimi

Data

Prioritization of limited funding for pipelines maintenance is a major issue that concerns municipalities nationwide. Conducting a probabilistic assessment can provide a complete characterization of the performance of structural elements and systems along with optimizing the limited resources. The most widely used probabilistic performance indicator is reliability, a measure of the probability of failure corresponding to a particular limit state (e.g., ultimate strength or serviceability). Reliability methods can be used to identify which pipeline sections within a particular system require the most urgent inspection or repair. To this end, an automated data-driven framework for large diameter reinforced concrete pipes (RCPs) …

Determination Of The Optimal Parameters For Self-Healing Efficiency Of Encapsulated Bacteria In Concrete Simulated Subtropical Climate, Momen R. Mousa, Marwa Hassan, Gabriel Andres Arce Amador, Ricardo Hungria Aug 2021

Determination Of The Optimal Parameters For Self-Healing Efficiency Of Encapsulated Bacteria In Concrete Simulated Subtropical Climate, Momen R. Mousa, Marwa Hassan, Gabriel Andres Arce Amador, Ricardo Hungria

Data

Concrete is a remarkable construction material. However, its low tensile strength makes it prone to cracking, which negatively affects its durability. To address this issue, bacterial concrete has been implemented as a self-healing alternative due to its capability to seal microcracks through microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICCP). In this study, a bacterial strain (i.e, Bacillus Pseudiformus) was encapsulated through three different methods: encapsulation through hydrogel beads, vacuum impregnation on lightweight aggregates, and attachment to cellulose nanocrystals. Furthermore, three precursor types were used, magnesium acetate, calcium lactate, and sodium lactate were implemented. Compressive strength tests and flexural strength tests were performed …

PRC-Affiliated Research

Low-temperature, atmospheric pressure plasma presents a new, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly method of water purification. For long duration crewed space missions, a novel water purification system that does not rely on consumable filters and chemicals would be desirable. Plasma systems provide a viable option for these missions, but their operation and designs need to be optimized and compared to existing technology. For this application, gas and power usage are key limiting factors. In this work, water contaminated with methylene blue is purified with plasma. The rate of purification, gas flow usage, and power consumption are compared for multiple devices. A …

Liutex And Statistical Analysis For Fluid Transition, Charles Matthew Nehemiah Nottage Aug 2021

Liutex And Statistical Analysis For Fluid Transition, Charles Matthew Nehemiah Nottage

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

A vortex can be intuitively recognized as the rotational swirling motion of the fluids. The fascination of this phenomenon brought about many years of research to define, classify, and identify the vortical structure. Throughout the decades, many vortex identification methods were developed and can be characterized into three generations. The generational methods are vorticity-based, eigenvalue-based such as Q, _ci, and _2, and Liutex-based. Before the development of Liutex, there was no mathematical definition for vortex. Is Liutex superior to vorticity and the eigenvalue-based methods? Is the vorticity vector the local rotational axis? Should vorticity be considered vortex? In this dissertation, …

Insect pollinators provide an important ecosystem service by improving agricultural productivity. However, their populations have been declining in recent years due to excessive use of synthetic pesticides, climate and land use/land cover (LULC) changes. Climate and LULC changes have resulted in land fragmentation and consequently pollinator habitat loss. To conserve pollinators, there is a need for sustainable agricultural practices such as integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM), which is a holistic landscape management approach that minimizes pesticides use while conserving pollinator abundance and diversity. This study aimed to use earth observation (EO) data to characterize landscape dynamics in terms of …

A capacity to execute long detours that are planned ahead of time has cognitive implications pertaining to reliance on internal representation. Here we investigate the detouring behaviour of Evarcha culicivora, an East African salticid spider that specializes at preying on blood-carrying mosquitoes. The findings from our experiments are the first evidence of a salticid making detouring plans based on whether the path chosen leads to more preferred instead of less preferred prey, as well as the first evidence of olfactory priming effects on motivation and selective attention in the context of detouring. Test spiders began on top of a starting …
