Laurentian Great Lakes Warming Threatens Northern Fruit Belt Refugia, Robert Warren
Laurentian Great Lakes Warming Threatens Northern Fruit Belt Refugia, Robert Warren
Biology Faculty Datasets
Climate refugia are anomalous ‘pockets’ of spatially or temporally disjunct environmental conditions that buffer distinct flora and fauna against prevailing climatic conditions. Physiographic landscape features, such as large water bodies, can create these micro-to-macro-scale terrestrial habitats, such as the prevailing westerly winds across the Laurentian Great Lakes that create relatively cooler leeward conditions in spring and relatively warmer leeward conditions in autumn. The leeward Great Lakes climate effects create a refugia (popularly known as a ‘fruit belt’) favorable for fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. This fruit belt refugia owes its existence to seasonal inversions whereby spring cooling prevents early flower budding …

Dielectric State Variables As Qualitative Indicators Of Moisture Absorption-Caused Mechanical Property Degradation In Gfrp Composite Structures, Partha Pratim Das, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in numerous fields owing to their intrinsic strength to weight ratio and various design benefits. However, these materials are prone to environmental aging, particularly moisture absorption. In essence, absorbed moisture infiltrates the polymer matrix and induces changes in the polymer network through chain scission, plasticization, and other bonding interactions. This causes irreversible damages to the material and significantly decreases mechanical strength. In this study, Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) has been used to identify the absorption mechanisms in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites by detecting the related polarization mechanisms. Here, results show …

Dielectric Analysis To Predict Moisture Absorption In Structural Composites: A Data-Driven Approach, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Due to continual exposure to moist environment, environmental degradation is a major threat to structural composites throughout their service life. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS)/Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BbDS) is a reliable nondestructive method that has been used in polymer industries for dielectric characterization of material. While moisture absorption causes irreversible changes in the polymer matrix composites, it also alters the electrical properties of the system which is detectable using BbDS. Since the physics that drives the change in electrical characteristics is driven by the modifications imposed by water molecules (whether free or bound), both events can be linked. A dielectric spectrum over …

Coupled Effects In Dielectric And Thermal Properties Of Polymer Matrix Composite Structures Due To Moisture Absorption, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are being used in number of fields including aerospace, marine, sports, medical, power sectors, etc. due to their lightweight nature while retaining high mechanical performance in terms of high specific strength, stiffness, and great fatigue properties. However, the applicability of these materials is restricted by their stability up to a certain temperature (i.e. glass transition temperature) and environmental degradation (i.e. moisture, UV light, etc.). Moisture ingression greatly reduces their mechanical properties altering material structure by causing polymer plasticization, chain scission and fiber-polymer interface deterioration. These changes instantaneously affect the thermal properties of the materials which …

The Effect Of Plasma Treatment On The Cure Behavior Of Out-Of-Life Prepregs And An Investigation Of The Mechanical Properties Of Composite Parts Manufactured From Plasma-Treated Prepregs, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Partha Pratim Das, Minhazur Rahman, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
Many industries, including aircraft, automobiles, and marine, are using prepreg (pre-impregnated fibers and a partially cured polymer matrix) to manufacture composite parts to achieve optimum fiber and resin volume ratio and part repeatability. Since prepregs have a short out oflife (i.e., the maximum storing time allowed at room temperature), they must be stored in refrigerators at low temperatures, which, if not maintained, have an unfavorable influence on the intended quality of the final product. For the present study, glass/epoxy prepregs (expired out-life) were plasmatreated before being used to make the composite part to compensate for the room temperature aging effect. …

Enhancing Gdf1 Expression With Devil’S Club (Oplopanax Horridus) Extracts In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Vasiliki Papakotsi
Doctoral Dissertations
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal hematopoietic malignancy with highly heterogeneous molecular and clinical profiles. It is one of the deadliest blood cancers, resulting in approximately 10,000 deaths each year. Impaired hematopoiesis is one of AML’s hallmarks. This entails defective erythropoiesis and proliferation of undifferentiated myeloblasts. AML is also characterized by chemoresistance and high relapse rates. Despite significant advances in treatments, there is no cure for AML. Therefore, there is an emerging and unmet need to shift away from traditional chemotherapeutics and focus on targeted therapies with curative potential. Growth/differentiation factor 1 (GDF1) is a member of the TGFβ …
Influence Of Permafrost Thaw, Microtopography, And Precipitation On Methane Cycling In Northern Peatlands, Clarice Rachelle Perryman
Influence Of Permafrost Thaw, Microtopography, And Precipitation On Methane Cycling In Northern Peatlands, Clarice Rachelle Perryman
Doctoral Dissertations
Northern peatlands are both globally important carbon (C) stores and sources of methane (CH4). The impacts of climate change including warming, changing precipitation and hydrology, shifts in vegetation, and thawing permafrost may increase the vulnerability of the northern peatland C stock, including the amount of C lost to the atmosphere as CH4. Variation in peatland water table depth strongly influences CH4 cycling, as water table levels largely control redox conditions and therefore rates of anaerobic CH4 production (methanogenesis) and aerobic CH4 oxidation (consumption, methanotrophy). As CH4 emissions reflect the balance of methanogenesis and methanotrophy, changes in water table depth due …

'Never Time To Do Anything Well': Mothers' Reported Constraints During A Pandemic, Grace Ellen Brannon, Molly Wiant Cummins
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Mothers’ perceptions of mothering could potentially influence several aspects of their home and work commitments. This study explores how mothers perceive their mothering experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic via 18 in-depth interviews. The authors use constraint theory and negotiation frameworks to discuss how family communication processes and perceptions of mothering are related within the context of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Findings demonstrated how working from home increased perceptions of family tensions, especially with the lack of home/work separation. Throughout the narratives, participants describe specific constraints at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural levels, as …

Implicating Ourselves Through Our Research: A Duoethnography Of Researcher Reflexivity, Molly Wiant Cummins, Grace Ellen Brannon
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
Researcher reflexivity is not a new concept in qualitative research. However, how/if researchers engage in that reflexivity varies. In this essay, the authors engage in reflexivity about a research project they conducted together. The previous project consisted of semi-structured interviews with U.S.-based mothers regarding their perceptions about motherhood. We then used intensive motherhood as a theoretical lens through which we analyzed the interviews. The project also encompassed mothers’ perceptions during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Through duoethnography, the researchers reflexively consider major dead angles of their project, challenges they faced, and what reflexivity brings to the forefront. They further reflect on …

Carotenoids are naturally abundant fat-soluble pigmented compounds, with dietary, antioxidant and vision protection advantages. The dietary carotenoids, Beta Carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, complexed with in bovine serum albumin (BSA) in aqueous solution, were explored using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate and quantify their spectral signatures. UV visible absorption spectroscopy was employed to confirm the linearity of responses over the concentration range employed (0.05-1mg/ml) and, of the 4 source wavelengths, 785nm, 660nm, 532nm, 473nm, 532nm was chosen to provide the optimal response. After preprocessing to remove water and BSA contributions, and correct for self-absorption, a partial least squares model with R2 …

Using Satellite Images Datasets For Road Intersection Detection In Route Planning, Fatmaelzahraa Eltaher Ph.D, Susan Mckeever, Ayman Taha, Jane Courtney
Datasets
Understanding road networks plays an important role in navigation applications such as self-driving vehicles and route planning for individual journeys. Intersections of roads are essential components of road networks. Understanding the features of an intersection, from a simple T-junction to larger multi-road junctions is critical to decisions such as crossing roads or selecting safest routes. The identification and profiling of intersections from satellite images is a challenging task. While deep learning approaches offer state-of-the-art in image classification and detection, the availability of training datasets is a bottleneck in this approach. In this paper, a labelled satellite image dataset for the …

Detecting Road Intersections Automatically From Satellite Images Using A Deep Learning Approach, Fatmaelzahraa Eltaher Ph.D, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Jane Courtney, Susan Mckeever
Datasets
Automatic detection of road intersections is an important task in various domains such as navigation, route planning, traffic prediction, and road network extraction. Road intersections range from simple three-way T-junctions (degree 3) to complex large-scale junctions with many branches. The location of intersections and their complexity is an important consideration in route planning, such as the requirement to avoid complex intersections on pedestrian journeys. This is relevant to vulnerable road users such as People with Blindness or Visually Impairment (PBVI) or children. Route planning applications, however, do not give information about the location or complexity of intersections as this information …

Severe-intensity constant work rate (CWR) cycling tests simulate the high-intensity competition environment and are useful for monitoring training progression and adaptation, yet impose significant physiological and psychological strain, require substantial recovery, and may disrupt athlete training or competition preparation. A brief, minimally fatiguing test providing comparable information is desirable.
Purpose: To determine whether physiological variables measured during, and functional decline in maximal power output immediately after, a 2-min CWR test can act as a proxy for 4-min test outcomes.
Methods: Physiological stress (V̇O2 kinetics, heart rate, blood lactate concentrations ([La-]b)) was monitored and …

Global Change Drivers Synergize With The Negative Impacts Of Non-Native Invasive Ants On Native Seed-Dispersing Ants, Robert Warren
Biology Faculty Datasets
Non-native species invasion, habitat fragmentation and climate change individually impose negative impacts on natural systems, but their synergistic effects may do more harm than the sum of their parts. We examined the combined effects of these global change drivers by studying the impacts of experimental warming on seed-dispersing forest ant nesting and foraging in the Southeastern U.S. to determine if warming and forest fragmentation facilitated non-native ant invasion effects on native ants. Spring ant phenology and activities were monitored for two years (2019-2020) at weekly bait stations and in artificial nest occupancy. We found that, when combined, forest edge habitat …

Finding Combinations Of Objects Within Categories Using Edges Software, Erin M. Thorpe, Ehab Rizek, Yan Xu
Chemistry Software
Edges Software can be used to find the combinations of any objects within different categories. A combination is an arrangement of objects where order does not matter. The original intent of this software was to provide the combinations of proteins within different pathways to aid in building a protein-(target)-protein network where protein nodes are connected to each other through their common pathway edges. This software can analyze tens of thousands of rows of excel data in just a few minutes and provide an excel output that contains all the combinations of objects within the different categories. This output can then …
