Integral Equation Formulation For Planar Plasmonic Structures With Finite Thickness In Layered Media, Esraa M. Mahdy, Alaa Abdelmageed, Ezzeldin A Soliman
Faculty Journal Articles
A detailed Volume Integral Equation (VIE) formulation for planar plasmonic nano structures with finite thickness in flat multi-layers medium is presented. The boundary condition along the localized metallic objects is expressed in terms of the unknown polarization current flowing through these objects in the form of an integral equation, which is solved using the Method of Moments (MoM). The Green's functions associated with a layered medium of practical importance are expressed in the spectral domain. The corresponding spatial domain Green's functions are obtained using the Discrete Complex Images Method (DCIM). Special treatment for the spectral function's asymptote at high spectral …

Fire was important to pre-colonization prairies. In today’s remnant and reconstructed prairies, managers frequently employ prescribed fire, a historical management practice that limits woody encroachment, suppresses non-native species, and promotes nutrient cycling. However, few long-term prescribed fire spatial datasets are available for study. We used archived images of prescribed fire maps and hand-drawn fire records to generate a geospatial record of the prescribed fire history at Nachusa Grasslands, a combination remnant and restored preserve in northern Illinois. This record contains maps of the prescribed fire history of the preserve across the entirety of its 35-year history. We used the maps …

Excerpt: "As cities worldwide work towards achieving the goals set under Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action, India plays a critical role in mitigating climate change as the seventh most affected country in terms of climate extremes. The country is a party to the Paris Agreement and Montreal Protocol, and has made significant pledges to reduce its carbon emissions at the 26th Conference of Parties. However, its position as the world’s third-highest carbon emitter and the increasing importance of cities as centres of climate action require a ground-level assessment of India’s climate mitigation policies."

Sudras And The Nation: Periyarist Explorations, Karthick Ram Manoharan
Sudras And The Nation: Periyarist Explorations, Karthick Ram Manoharan
Popular Media
The sudra question is a complicated one in Indian sociology, history and politics, but it had an impact on a significant period of the Dravidian movement. Periyar E.V. Ramasamy referred to the non-Brahmin castes of South India, who did not belong to the ‘untouchable’ communities, as sudras, the lowest varna in the Hindu social order. He used the inferiorized identity of ‘sudra’ not in assertion or pride, but as a social critique of brahminism. Acknowledging the existence of multiple jatis within the sudra varna, Periyar criticized their notions of hierarchy towards each other and especially towards the Dalits. He sought …

Modeling Crash Severity And Collision Types Using Machine Learning, Amit Kumar, Hari Krishnan Melempat Kalapurayil
Data
Traffic safety analysis is the fundamental step for reducing economic, social, and environmental cost incurred due to traffic accidents. The essence of traffic safety is understanding the factors affecting crash occurrence, injury severity and collision type and their underlying relationships and predict-prevent future crash instances. Crash injury severity studies in past have utilized numerous statistical, econometric and Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to extract the underlying relationship between the crash causal factors and the consequent severity or collision type. The study aims to explore the Multi-Label Classification (MLC) tool from the domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for …

The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy
The Roles Of Set Size And Nonexample Type On Concept Formation, Catherine L. Williams, Claire C. St. Peter, Madeleine J. Murphy
Graduate Student Scholarship
Concept formation is demonstrated when a learner responds when new examples are presented (i.e., generalization) but not when new nonexamples are presented (i.e., discrimination). Gradually increasing the number of examples and nonexamples taught together (i.e., set-size expansion) promotes concept formation with nonhumans. Although set size impacts speed of acquisition with humans, concept formation has not been evaluated. Therefore, the primary purpose of the current study was to compare acquisition and concept formation during two procedures: set-size expansion and single set-size. College students were taught two biological concepts, one using set-size expansion and the other with the full …

Moisture Content Prediction In Polymer Composites Using Machine Learning Techniques, Partha Pratim Das, Monjur Morshed Rabby, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan
Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive
The principal objective of this study is to employ non-destructive broadband dielectric spectroscopy/impedance spectroscopy and machine learning techniques to estimate the moisture content in FRP composites under hygrothermal aging. Here, classification and regression machine learning models that can accurately predict the current moisture saturation state are developed using the frequency domain dielectric response of the composite, in conjunction with the time domain hygrothermal aging effect. First, to categorize the composites based on the present state of the absorbed moisture supervised classification learning models (i.e., quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier) …

Bioinspired Phenolic Compounds For Biomedical Devices, Zhen Tian
Bioinspired Phenolic Compounds For Biomedical Devices, Zhen Tian
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I investigated the metal-chelating ability and redox activity of phenoliccompounds from different sources for biomedical applications. Eumelanins are the naturally occurring biopigments that can be found in skin, hair, eyes, or brain of many living organisms. Various functional groups in eumelanin permit it to binding metal ions via comproportionation reaction. I investigated the structure-property relationship of eumelanin by X-ray scattering and electrochemical techniques. I reported the mesoscale structure of eumelanins and its impact on the charge transport. X-ray scattering suggests that eumelanin pigments exhibit the semi-crystalline structure with ordered d-spacings. These unique mesoscale structures further influence the …

G-Map123: A Mechanistic-Based Data-Driven Approach For 3d Nonlinear Elastic Modeling — Via Both Uniaxial And Equibiaxial Tension Experimental Data, Jie Chen, Hang Yang, Khalil I. Elkhodary, Shan Tang
Faculty Journal Articles
This work proposes a data-driven approach, G-MAP123, using discrete data directly for nonlinear elastic materials to solve boundary value problems, avoiding analytic-function based constitutive models. G-MAP123 is formulated in the current configuration in which the Cauchy stress and the left Cauchy–Green strain are adopted as the stress–strain measures of the data. Data generated under both uniaxial tension and equibiaxial tension experiments is used. A data search employing stress triaxiality as the index is here proposed for the stress update. Furthermore, including additional data from other loading paths is also rendered possible. Comparison with reference analytic-function based models such as Arruda–Boyce, …

Cellular Network-Supported Machine Learning Techniques For Autonomous Uav Trajectory Planning, Ghada Afifi, Yasser Gadallah
Faculty Journal Articles
Autonomous trajectory planning is a hot topic in the UAV mission planning area of research. Autonomous UAVs have major use case applications which involve navigation in complex environments such as aerial photography, package delivery and relief operations. Many existing trajectory planning solutions rely on the GPS system. However, such GPS-based solutions do not provide a reliable real-time navigation solution, particularly in dense urban environments. Opportunely, cellular networks can be utilized as an attractive alternative for UAV navigation applications. We therefore propose to utilize existing 5G infrastructure to enable the UAV to navigate complex environments, independent of the GPS and other …

A viral outbreak is a global challenge that affects public health and safety. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been spreading globally, affecting millions of people worldwide, and led to significant loss of lives and deterioration of the global economy. The current adverse effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic demands finding new detection methods for future viral outbreaks. The environment's transmission pathways include and are not limited to air, surface water, and wastewater environments. The wastewater surveillance, known as wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), can potentially monitor viral outbreaks and provide a complementary clinical testing method. Another investigated outbreak surveillance technique that …

Synthesis Of Sponge Like Gd3+ Doped Vanadium Oxide/2d Mxene Composites For Improved Degradation Of Industrial Effluents And Pathogens, Sonia Zulfiqar, Talya Tahir, Khadija Chaudhary, Muhammad Farooq Warsi
Faculty Journal Articles
Current report is based on the synthesis of Gd+3 doped V2O5 nanostructures (GVO) along with fabrication of GVO/MXene binary nanocomposite. As synthesized GVO and GVO/MXene were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction), FESEM (Field emission scanning electron microscopy), EDX (Energy dispersive X-ray), BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller technique) and UV–Visible spectroscopy. Diffraction and elemental analysis confirmed the substitution of Gd+3 ions in VO layers. Orthorhombic phase of VO was observed in both GVO and GVO/MXene samples with crystallite size range of 17.02–17.51 nm. FESEM analysis indicated asymmetrical VO particles and sheets distributed on MXene layers, giving out a sponge like appearance. Surface …
