Disentangling The Cognitive, Physical, And Mental Health Sequelae Of Covid-19, Conor J. Wild, Loretta Norton, David K. Menon, David A. Ripsman, Richard H. Swartz, Adrian M. Owen

Neuroscience Institute Publications

As COVID-19 cases exceed hundreds of millions globally, many survivors face cognitive challenges and prolonged symptoms. However, important questions about the cognitive effects of COVID-19 remain unresolved. In this cross-sectional online study, 478 adult volunteers who self-reported a positive test for COVID-19 (mean = 30 days since most recent test) perform significantly worse than pre-pandemic norms on cognitive measures of processing speed, reasoning, verbal, and overall performance, but not short-term memory, suggesting domain-specific deficits. Cognitive differences are even observed in participants who did not require hospitalization. Factor analysis of health- and COVID-related questionnaires reveals two clusters of symptoms—one that varies …

Social Factors And The Neurobiology Of Pathogen Avoidance, Martin Kavaliers, Klaus Peter Ossenkopp, Cashmeira Dove Tyson, Indra R. Bishnoi, Elena Choleris Jan 2022

Social Factors And The Neurobiology Of Pathogen Avoidance, Martin Kavaliers, Klaus Peter Ossenkopp, Cashmeira Dove Tyson, Indra R. Bishnoi, Elena Choleris

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Although the evolutionary causes and consequences of pathogen avoidance have been gaining increasing interest, there has been less attention paid to the proximate neurobiological mechanisms. Animals gauge the infection status of conspecifics and the threat they represent on the basis of various sensory and social cues. Here, we consider the neurobiology of pathogen detection and avoidance from a cognitive, motivational and affective state (disgust) perspective, focusing on the mechanisms associated with activating and directing parasite/pathogen avoidance. Drawing upon studies with laboratory rodents, we briefly discuss aspects of (i) olfactory-mediated recognition and avoidance of infected conspecifics; (ii) relationships between pathogen avoidance …

Oer "First & Last Day Of Class" Powerpoint Presentation (Utk Version), Elizabeth Spica, The Ut Libraries Open Education Working Group

Open Education Working Group

This CC-BY licensed, fully editable and adaptable "First & Last Day of Class" PowerPoint is intended for faculty using Open Educational Resources (OER) in their courses. Similar to presentations provided by traditional publishers that introduce required course materials, this PowerPoint resource explains in a few concise slides what OER is, why it's so great, and how students can access the OER needed for their course that semester. The final slide helps faculty remind students they are free to keep their materials forever, and it also recommends ways they can get involved to support OER efforts on campus.

Objective: This exploratory study examined perceived self-efficacy in information literacy skills in nursing students and discusses how collaborative relationships between nursing faculty and librarians can strengthen curricular efforts to support information literacy.

Methods: Using the Information Competency Assessment Instrument, a survey research design was used to determine student perceptions of their information literacy skills. Participants included nursing Baccalaureate, Master's and Doctoral students in each of these programs.

Results: The Information Competency Assessment Instrument identified low self-efficacy in the following categories: using an index, determining information needed for assignments, use of governmental documents, media sources, producers of information and citing sources. …

Cells And Soft Tissues In Fossil Bone: A Review Of Preservation Mechanisms, With Corrections Of Misconceptions, Philip J. Senter Jan 2022

Cells And Soft Tissues In Fossil Bone: A Review Of Preservation Mechanisms, With Corrections Of Misconceptions, Philip J. Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

In the most recent three decades, there has been an outpouring of research on the preservation of cells and soft tissues within fossil bones. Cells and soft tissues that are documented to have been preserved in fossil bones include osteocytes, chondrocytes, blood vessels, nerve fibers, nerves, and the sheets of collagen in bone matrix. Recent studies identify Fenton reactions as a plausible preservation mechanism for cells and soft tissues within bones, document the chemical signatures of Fenton reactions in the cells and soft tissues of fossil bones, and indicate that such preservation occurs early in diagenesis and is facilitated by …

Documenting Emotional Labor: An Exercise In Critical Communication Pedagogy, Molly Wiant Cummins, Audrey A. Huber Jan 2022

Documenting Emotional Labor: An Exercise In Critical Communication Pedagogy, Molly Wiant Cummins, Audrey A. Huber

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

This essay builds on Lawless’s call to name and chronicle emotional work. The authors draw attention to the emotional labor that has become an institutional expectation of the academic position, particularly among people with marginalized identities, to name this labor as such and to use this documentation as evidence for compensation. The authors’ emotional labor is grounded in critical communication pedagogy (CCP), which compels them to engage in a fundamentally different form of emotional labor, one that depends on relationship-building and the recognition of systemic and structural forms of oppression through reflexive care and performative listening. This form of emotional …

As instructors in different contexts—an English program in a public two-year college, a language and linguistics department in a small liberal arts college, and digital scholarship services in a library at a major research university—we the co-editors of this special issue on Open Educational Resources (OER) have seen the attitudes toward and practices of OER shift over the last several years. Embraced by college and university administrators and funded by national and state …

Influence Of Pediatric Patients’ Developmental Or Chronic Health Condition Status As A Predictor Of Parents’ Perceptions Of Patient- And Family-Cen, Grace Ellen Brannon, Madison Ray Jan 2022

Influence Of Pediatric Patients’ Developmental Or Chronic Health Condition Status As A Predictor Of Parents’ Perceptions Of Patient- And Family-Cen, Grace Ellen Brannon, Madison Ray

Communication Faculty Publications - Archive

Our study aimed to estimate how a pediatric patient’s health condition status influences parents’ perceptions of patient- and family-centered care (PFCC). We analyzed five years (2013–2017) of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data in efforts to expand understanding of the family influence in pediatric health encounters, using family systems theory as our theoretical lens. The sample included 36,675 parents of children with developmental or chronic health conditions who reported visiting a health-care provider within the past 12 months. The independent variable was a combined measure of any developmental or chronic health conditions previously diagnosed in the child being assessed. Dependent variables …
