Adjustment Of Precipitation Measurements Using Total Rain Weighing Sensor (Trws) Gauges In The Cryospheric Hydrometeorology Observation (Choice) System Of The Qilian Mountains, Northwest China, Zhao Yanni, Chen Rensheng, Han Chuntan, Wang Lei
Journal of Arid Land
Precipitation is one of the most important indicators of climate data, but there are many errors in precipitation measurements due to the influence of climatic conditions, especially those of solid precipitation in alpine mountains and at high latitude areas. The measured amount of precipitation in those areas is frequently less than the actual amount of precipitation. To understand the impact of climatic conditions on precipitation measurements in the mountainous areas of Northwest China and the applicability of different gauges in alpine mountains, we established a cryospheric hydrometeorology observation (CHOICE) system in 2008 in the Qilian Mountains, which consists of six …

Journal of Arid Land
The rapid economic development that the Hotan Oasis in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China has undergone in recent years may face some challenges in its ecological environment. Therefore, an analysis of the spatiotemporal changes in ecological environment of the Hotan Oasis is important for its sustainable development. First, we constructed an improved remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and implemented change detection for their spatial distribution. Second, we performed a spatial autocorrelation analysis on RSEI distribution map and used land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) data …

Cardiac valves exhibit highly complex structures and specialized functions that include dynamic interactions between cells, extracellular matrix (ECM) and their hemodynamic environment. Valvular gene expression is tightly regulated by a variety of mechanisms including epigenetic factors such as histone modifications, RNA-based mechanisms and DNA methylation. To date, methylation fingerprints of non-diseased human aortic and mitral valves have not been studied. In this work we analyzed the differential methylation profiles of 12 non-diseased aortic and mitral valve tissue samples (in matched pairs). Analysis of methylation data [reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS)] of 16,101 promoters genome-wide revealed 584 differentially methylated (DM) promoters, …

Modern database systems suffer from compromised throughput, persistent unfair I/O processing and unpredictable, high latency variability of user requests as a result of mismatches between highly scaled user parallel I/O and the I/O capacity afforded by the database and its underlying storage I/O stack. To address this problem, we introduce an efficient user-centric QoS-aware scheduling shim, called AppleS, for user-level fine-grained I/O regulation that delivers the right amount and pattern of user parallel I/O requests to the database system and supports user SLOs with high-level performance isolation and reduced I/O resource contention. It is designed to enable database systems to …

We present a comprehensive and in-depth study of Intel Optane DC persistent memory (DCPMM). Our focus is on exploring the internal design of Optane’s on-DIMM readwrite buffering and its impacts on application-perceived performance, read and write amplifications, the overhead of different types of persists, and the tradeoffs between persistency models. While our measurements confirm the results of the existing profiling studies, we have new discoveries and offer new insights. Notably, we find that read and write are managed differently in separate on-DIMM read and write buffers. Comparable in size, the two buffers serve distinct purposes. The read buffer offers higher …

The use of endophytic fungi has dramatically increased plant performance through the enhancement of plant protection against abiotic and biotic stressors. We previously demonstrated that the endophytic fungus Trichoderma asperellum M2RT4 improves tomato defenses against the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta through the reduction of oviposition, leafmining, pupation, and adult emergence. However, the underlying mechanism by which the presence of this endophytic fungus within tomato host plant affects T. absoluta host selection and life-history traits is unknown. We tested the behavioral responses of T. absoluta in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and found that females preferred non-inoculated tomato plants against those inoculated by …

The bromination of poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) rubber introduces a small amount of bromide groups (1–2 mol%) to the elastomer backbone and creates new opportunities for functionalisation, as compared to other saturated and diene elastomers. In this work, three types of nucleophile reagents: namely pyridine, triphenylphosphine and imidazoles bearing four types of side groups of methyl, ethyl, hydroxyl or vinyl group were introduced to brominated poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) rubber (BIIR) through nucleophile substitution with the bromine via solid-state rubber compounding and curing processes. The resulted ionic aggregates act as physical crosslinks and their size and density directly affected the mechanical reinforcement, self-healing and dynamic mechanical …

Mönckeberg Sclerosis With Giant Cells As A Masquerade Of Giant Cell Arteritis, Andrew Johannemann, A D. Proia, Lisa Criscione-Schreiber
Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of
Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common type of vasculitis in adults, which is classified as a large/medium vessel vasculitis. It has a predilection for the ophthalmic circulation and extracranial carotid system. Temporal artery biopsy specimens can show the presence of inflammatory multinucleated giant cells. Here, we report just the third case of Mönckeberg sclerosis with multinucleated giant cells affecting the temporal artery and mimicking GCA. This rare finding in the evaluation of a common vasculitis is important for rheumatologists to be aware of and emphasizes close collaboration between clinicians and pathologists.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), also known as endotoxin, can trigger septic shock, a severe form of inflammation-mediated sepsis with a very high mortality rate. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this endotoxin remain to be defined and detoxification of LPS is yet to be established. Macrophages, a type of immune cells, initiate a key response responsible for the cascade of events leading to the surge in inflammatory cytokines and immunopathology of septic shock. This study was undertaken to determine whether the LPS-induced inflammation in macrophage cells could be ameliorated via CDDO-IM (2-cyano-3,12 dioxooleana-1,9 dien-28-oyl imidazoline), a novel triterpenoid compound. The capabilities of Language Models (LMs) have continued to increase in recent years, as have their computational requirements. Widely available APIs have also become available. These APIs present new challenges for ease of gradient based fine-tuning by users, resulting in the use models which may be larger than necessary and more expensive, therefore reducing accessibility. In this paper, we present a new methodology for increasing performance of single-shot LMs by chaining multiple smaller LMs. Additionally, as the derived representation is in plain-text it is readily human interpretable. We show that optimizing the context which leads to this derived representation results …

A mechanistically informed data-driven approach is proposed to simulate the complex plastic behavior of microstructured/homogenized solids subjected to cyclic loading, especially to simulate the Masing effect. Our proposed approach avoids the complicated mathematical construction of an appropriate yield surface, and does not require a large amount of data for training, by virtue of its mechanistic character, which couples the methods and tools of data science to the principles of mechanics. Specifically, a data-processing method is herein advanced to extract specific internal variables that characterize cyclic plastic behavior, which cannot be measured directly via physical experiments. A yield surface, represented by …

Children are adept at learning their language’s speech-sound categories, but just how these categories function in their developing lexicon has not been mapped out in detail. Here, we addressed whether, in a language-guided looking procedure, two-year-olds would respond to a mispronunciation of the voicing of the initial consonant of a newly learned word. First, to provide a baseline of mature native-speaker performance, adults were taught a new word under training conditions of low prosodic variability. In a second experiment, 24- and 30-month-olds were taught a new word under training conditions of high or low prosodic variability. Children and adults showed …

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are structurally similar to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and have comparable mechanical properties. In addition, they surpass CNTs in terms of thermal stability and inertness. This opens many additional opportunities for taking advantage of their unique properties. Contrary to the extensive research conducted on aluminum (Al)-CNT composites, few studies have focused on Al-BNNT composites. In the present work, a novel Al-BNNT dual matrix composite is investigated. Pure unmilled Al powder is mixed with an equal weight of milled Al-2wt% BNNT composite powder with the objective of forming a dual matrix composite combining strength and ductility. The bulk …
