Medicinal plants are the most utilized and validated feed additives in the aquaculture industry. This study investigated the dietary effects of anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Fish were treated with anise at 0, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 g per kg diet for successive 120 days. The results showed a marked enhancement in the growth performance and reduced feed conversion ratio in fish-fed anise compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The carcass composition showed that crude protein was meaningfully (p < 0.05) by 2.5 and 3.5 g anise per kg diet. The viscerosomatic index was significantly (p < 0.05) improved in the case of 3.5 g anise per kg diet. The intestinal antibacterial capacity showed a noticeably reduced count of Vibrio spp. and faecal coliform in the intestines of fish treated with 2.5 and 3.5 g anise per kg diet compared to the control (p < 0.05). Hematocrit and red blood cells (RBCs) showed higher levels in 2.5 and 3.5 g anise per kg diet groups than the control diet without significant differences with the 1.5 g/kg group (p ˃ 0.05). In addition, the hemoglobin and white blood cell (WBCs) levels were significantly higher in anise treated groups than in the control group (p < 0.05). The immune response of European sea bass fed dietary anise showed that fish treated with 1.5 g anise per kg diet had higher lysozyme and phagocytic activities than the other groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, incorporating anise into the diet of European sea bass is suggested to enhance performances and well-being.

Animal body size estimation from zooarchaeological specimens often relies on specific, one-dimensional (i.e., conventional) measures from skeletal elements. Here, we introduce an animal body size estimation technique for archaeological fishes that relies on 3D reference scans and the calculation of centroid size, a standard 3D geometric morphometric proxy measure for organism size. Centroid size-based estimations on whole caudal vertebrae are strongly correlated with a widely accepted measure (i.e., centrum width), but the scalability and flexibility of the centroid size-based approach allows for use on a wide variety of fragmented remains. We use zooarchaeological fish remains (subfamily Ictiobinae) from late pre-Hispanic …

Background Saudi Arabian diets are transitioning to more Western dietary patterns that have been associated with higher levels of inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests plant-based diets are related to lower levels of inflammation; however, the definition of plant-based diets varies. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which an overall Plant-Based Diet Index (PDI), Healthy-PDI (hPDI), and Unhealthy-PDI (uPDI) vs Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index correlate with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level. Design This was a cross-sectional study carried out at King Saud University. Data on dietary intake, anthropometrics, and hs-CRP were collected. Participants/setting Female students aged …

Hope contributes to positive development in adolescents, and religious and spiritual contexts may be particularly important for developing and supporting hope. However, extant literature on hope, religion, and spirituality neglects their synergistic relation, leaving questions about how they work together to support development. In this study, we explore how religiousness and spirituality (R/S) inform hope by identifying unique synergies that might be particularly useful in difficult contexts. Multilevel qualitative content analyses of interviews conducted with 18 thriving Salvadoran adolescents (50% female, Mage = 16.39 years, SD = 1.83) involved in a faith-based program provided evidence that the ideological and relational …

Historic over-exploitation and the more recent threats caused by fisheries by-catch, disease and climate change have left sea turtle populations in the Wider Caribbean at risk of extinction. In 1995, following regional declines in nesting and foraging populations, the island of Anguilla implemented a moratorium on the hunting of turtles. At the request of the Government of Anguilla for scientific data to either support or remove the moratorium, comprehensive population estimates were obtained, and foraging, nesting and migratory movements were examined. In addition, community perspectives on turtles and their protection were assessed. Between 2015 and 18 surveys of 30 nesting …

Global pest invasions have significantly increased in recent years. These invasions together with climate warming directly impact agriculture. Tropical climates feature extreme weather events, including high temperatures and seasonal droughts. Thus, successful invasive pests in tropics have to adapt to these extreme climate features. The intrinsic factors relevant to tropical invasion of insects have been explored in many studies, but the knowledge is rather dispersed in contemporary literature. Here, we reviewed the potential biophysical characters of successful invasive pests’ adaption to tropical environments including [1] inherent high basal stress tolerance and advanced life-history performances [2], phenotypic plasticity [3], rapid evolution …

The abandonment of insecticide treatments to achieve sustainable crop production calls for a combination of methods to obtain satisfactory pest control. To this end, net houses and biological control are two promising methods, though we suspected that most natural enemies are blocked outside the net houses. In Kenya, tomato crops are particularly threatened by Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood 1856) and Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) that are targets of most insecticide treatments in this country. We investigated in an on-farm experiment (i) the abundances of T. vaporariorum and T. absoluta in open fields and in net houses, (ii) the diversity of arthropod …

Kairomones are semiochemicals that are emitted by an organism and which mediate interspecific interaction that is of benefit to an organism of another species that receives these chemical substances. Parasitoids find and recognize their hosts through eavesdropping on the kairomones emitted from the by-products or the body of the host. Hemipteran insect pests feed on plant sap and excrete the digested plant materials as honeydew. Honeydew serves as a nutritional food source for parasitoids and a medium for micro-organisms whose activity induces the release of volatiles exploited by parasitoids for host location. The parasitoid Encarsia formosa preferentially parasitizes its host, …

Climate change and agriculture are strongly correlated, and the fast pace of climate change will have impacts on agroecosystems and crop productivity. This review summarizes potential impacts of rising temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentrations on insect pest-crop interactions and provides two-way approaches for integrating these impacts into crop models for sustainable pest management strategies designing. Rising temperatures and CO2 levels affect insect physiology, accelerate their metabolism and increase their consumption, ultimately increasing population densities, which result in greater crop injury and damage, and yield loss. Whereas these direct effects are empirically demonstrated for temperature rises, they are less straightforward for …

Despite their important ecological roles for soil health and soil fertility, free-living nematodes (FLN) have received relatively limited research attention. The present study evaluated the community structure and diversity of FLN in a field setting. The experiments were conducted in on-farm and on-station field plots sown to maize (Zea mays) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) under four cropping practices. These farming systems included organic (compost and biopesticide use), conventional (synthetic fertilizer and pesticide applications), farmer practice (organic and synthetic amendments) and a control (non-amended plots). Nineteen genera of free living nematodes, belonging to bacterivores, fungivores, omnivores and predators were recorded. Among …

Shāh Walī Allāh In Defence Of Ibn Taymiyyah, Muzzammil Ahmad, Ian Greer

Until now, only a short excerpt from the eighteenth-century South Asian reformist Shāh Walī Allāh’s (d. 1176/1762) treatise in defence of the medieval Syrian theologian Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) has been published in English. In addition to providing a full translation of Risālah fī Manāqib Ibn Taymiyyah wa ’l-Difā‘ ‘anhu (Epistle on the Virtues of Ibn Taymiyyah and in His Defence), this article argues that Shāh Walī Allāh’s due attention for Ibn Taymiyyah is principally a defence of his own work for the larger Walī Allāhī project, heavily inspired by the latter, and an effort to reconcile thinkers as disparate …

Salinity is one of the major abiotic stress factors that threaten crop development and sustainable food production. As a mitigation strategy, several plant growth regulators and osmoprotectants have been applied to ameliorate the negative effects of salinity stress in plants. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of foliar applications of different concentrations of salicylic acid and proline on the growth, yield, fruit quality, and nutritional composition of cucumber crops grown under saline conditions. The three main irrigation salinity variations included electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.5 dS/m (control), EC 6.0 dS/m, and EC 12.0 dS/m. Foliar spray treatments …

Ecological traits that filter the occurrence of species and functional groups responding to environmental and other variables are keys to the assembly processes of communities, but little is currently known about these processes for endophytic fungi. A trophic-based joint species distribution model was applied to endophyte occurrence by 110 crucifer-inhabiting fungal species isolated from Brassica rapa, Raphanus sativus and Brassica oleracea, from 21 sites with different landscape compositions and pesticide use over four seasons. We investigated the responses of taxonomie diversity, function diversity and functional composition. Season, plant identity and plant part were significant factors in shaping all indices. Elevation …

As virtual reality (VR) offers an unprecedented experience than any existing multimedia technologies, VR videos, or called 360-degree videos, have attracted considerable attention from academia and industry. How to quantify and model end users' perceived quality in watching 360-degree videos, or called QoE, resides the center for high-quality provisioning of these multimedia services. In this work, we present EyeQoE, a novel QoE assessment model for 360-degree videos using ocular behaviors. Unlike prior approaches, which mostly rely on objective factors, EyeQoE leverages the new ocular sensing modality to comprehensively capture both subjective and objective impact factors for QoE modeling. We propose …

The prevalence rates of trypanosomes, including those that require cyclical transmission by tsetse flies, are widely distributed in Africa. Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense are actively maintained in regions where there are no tsetse flies although at low frequencies. Whether this could be due to an independent evolutionary origin or multiple introduction of trypanosomes due to continuous movement of livestock between tsetse-free and -infested areas is not known. Thus, the aim of the study was to carry out microsatellite genotyping to explore intra-specific genetic diversity between T. (Trypanozoon), T. congolense and Trypanosoma vivax from the two regions: tsetse infested and …

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The dayside aurora is greatly influenced by the solar wind. Many different types of dayside auroral features have been identified, including poleward-moving auroral forms (PMAFs), throat aurora, shock aurora, and diffuse aurora. This study looks at the dayside auroral activity using the BACC ground-based all-sky-cameras located in both Longyearbyen (Kjell Henriksen Observatory) and Ny-Alesund, Svalbard. There are times when PMAFs peel off the dayside auroral oval in an ordered fashion, elongated east-west arcs moving poleward. At other times, the dayside aurora displays arcs that have extreme brightening moving through the arcs as they exhibit swirls and become a bit chaotic …
