Integrating Performance Indicators In The Production Rules Of Shape-Shifting Grammars For Architectural Adaptive Façade Systems, Rana El-Dabba, Sherif Abdelmohsen Jun 2022

Integrating Performance Indicators In The Production Rules Of Shape-Shifting Grammars For Architectural Adaptive Façade Systems, Rana El-Dabba, Sherif Abdelmohsen

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper presents shape-shifting grammar as a computational method that couples the environmental impact of utilizing programable materials in adaptive façades by their design parameters. The proposed grammar relies on physical experiments in a sealed temperature chamber, associated with a digital interface and image analysis software to track motion response for our previously developed composite ‘Hygromorphic Thermo-bimetal (HMTM)’ that responds passively to variation in humidity or temperature. This is linked with Grasshopper to evaluate performance indicators, specifically environmental impact, and percentage of view. The significance of the proposed grammar lies in tracking, analyzing, and predicting the behavior of the programable composite, …

Identifying The Geographic Origins Of Invasive Megathyrsus Maximus In The United States Using Molecular Data, John F. Gaskin, John A. Goolsby, Marie Claude Bon, Massimo Cristofaro, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Megathyrsus maximus is nonnative in the neotropics, with a tall form that is commonly used as a forage grass and a smaller-statured form that is considered invasive in south Texas, USA. Biological control researchers are challenged to find an agent that will attack the short form, but not the desirable tall form in other parts of the neotropics. We conducted molecular analyses on 155 Megathyrsus maximus samples from its native range in Africa and compared them with U.S. short-form samples to help determine the geographic origins of its invasion. We found eight distinct genotypes in 34 short-form samples from Texas …

Faculty Journal Articles

The objective of this study was to measure direct and indirect relationships between food insecurity (FI), protein intake, social relationships, depressive symptoms, and their impact on hospitalization among home-delivered meal (HDM) recipients, compared to controls, using structural equation modeling. The analysis used data from the National Outcomes Evaluation Study (2015-2017) of the OAANSP. HDM recipients' mean usual protein intake was significantly higher than controls, but both groups had mean intakes below recommendations. Eating alone was inversely associated with lower protein intake and greater hospitalizations in controls. FI, prevalent in 25.1% of HDM recipient and 16% of controls, was associated with …

Hybrid And Approximate Algorithms For The Dial-A-Ride Problem With Adaptive Ride Times Considering Different Service Strategies, Sherif A. Fahmy Jun 2022

Hybrid And Approximate Algorithms For The Dial-A-Ride Problem With Adaptive Ride Times Considering Different Service Strategies, Sherif A. Fahmy

Faculty Journal Articles

The dial-a-ride problem (DARP) is that of satisfying a number of pickup and drop-off customer requests, using a fleet of vehicles. In real life, traffic conditions can affect expected travel times, and hence the satisfaction of rigid pickup/drop-off time windows and scheduled ride times. This article considers the DARP with customer-adaptive ride times under different service conditions and strategies. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model that minimizes service cost and customer inconvenience. A hybrid genetic–variable neighbourhood search algorithm (GAVNS) is proposed to solve the problem. Experiments are conducted to compare the performance of GAVNS with …

Trauma, Resilience, And Distress In Post-Revolution Egypt., Laura E. Miller-Graff, Julia Paulson, Nadine Hosny, Kate Ellis

Faculty Journal Articles

Trauma represents a persistent threat to health and wellbeing. Yet, little research has examined links between trauma, psychopathology, and resilience in the Middle East and North Africa region outside of refugee settings, especially in Egypt. Existing studies in Egypt rarely examine trauma exposure from a polyvictimization lens, assess multiple forms of trauma-related psychopathology, or focus on dimensional symptom assessment. The current study aimed to address these gaps by (a) reporting on the diverse range of trauma exposure types, including direct, witnessed, and indirect exposure in a trauma-exposed sample; and (b) examining the associations between trauma exposure, psychopathology, and resilience.

Improving Medication Adherence In Psychiatric Patients With A Medication Adherence Program, Whitney Peterson Jun 2022

Improving Medication Adherence In Psychiatric Patients With A Medication Adherence Program, Whitney Peterson

DNP and Student Works

Introduction: Medication non-adherence significantly impacts patients with serious mental illness (SMI). It's estimated that over 50% of patients prescribed antipsychotic medication are non-adherent to the prescribed treatment. Medication non-adherence impedes the patient's safety, leads to relapse, and the need for rehospitalization.

Research Methodology: Literature was examined from the past five years (2016-2021) on the use of telephonic follow-up interventions to improve medication adherence in patients with psychiatric disorders and other chronic diseases at risk for mental illness. Databases (PubMed, CINAHL, ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library) were used. The inclusion criteria focused on psychiatric disorders, telephone calls to improve medication adherence, …

Inequalities In (Trans)National Surrogacy: A Call For Examining Complex Lived Realities With An Empirical Lens, Heather Jacobson, Virginie Roze Jun 2022

Inequalities In (Trans)National Surrogacy: A Call For Examining Complex Lived Realities With An Empirical Lens, Heather Jacobson, Virginie Roze

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Income disparity has become a mainstay of the international critique and public discourse on commercial surrogacy. Using existing empirical data, including our two respective field studies in India and the United States, we analyze surrogacy from a gender perspective and show how the visibility of gender disparities in a transnational context encourages assumptions at the local and national context. In doing so, we highlight the narrative of inequality, explore the complexity of surrogacy outside of a one-note narrative, and show how that narrative operates to overshadow the complex, lived experiences of those engaged in surrogacy.

Environmental & Plant Biology Open Access Publications

Dictyostelid cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) are ubiquitous microorganisms found in the uppermost layers of most soils. Reports on the species diversity of dictyostelids in Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, are few in number. A survey for dictyostelids performed in northern Thailand in 2008 recovered 15 distinctive forms, including several common species and a number of forms morphologically different from anything already described. Five of the latter were formally described as new to science in a previous paper. An additional five isolates appeared to be morphologically distinct, and this was supported by DNA sequence data and phylogenetic analysis. These isolates representing four …

Impact Of Heat Stress On Expression Of Wheat Genes Responsive To Hessian Fly Infestation, Jiazheng Yuan, Jordan O’Neal, Daria Brown, Lieceng Zhu

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Heat stress compromises wheat (Triticum aestivium) resistance to Hessian fly (HF, Mayetiola destructor (Say)). This study aimed to investigate the impact of heat stress on transcript expression of wheat genes associated with resistance to HF infestation under normal and heat-stressed conditions. To this end, ‘Molly’, a wheat cultivar containing the resistance gene H13, was subjected to HF infestation, heat stress, and the combination of HF infestation and heat stress. Our RNA-Seq approach identified 21 wheat genes regulated by HF infestation under normal temperatures (18?C) and 155 genes regulated by HF infestation when plants were exposed to 35?C for 6 h. …

Charged Space Debris Induced Nonlinear Magnetosonic Waves Using Inertial Magnetohydrodynamics, Siba Prasad Acharya, Abhik Mukherjee, M. S. Janaki

Journal Articles

The excitations of nonlinear magnetosonic waves in the presence of charged space debris objects in the low Earth orbital (LEO) plasma region are investigated by taking into account the effects of electron inertia in the framework of classical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD); which is also referred to as inertial magnetohydrodynamics. The magnetosonic waves are found to be governed by a forced Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) equation with the forcing term representing the effects of space debris objects. The dynamical behaviours of both slow and fast magnetosonic solitary waves are explored in detail. Exact pinned accelerated magnetosonic lump wave solutions are shown to be stable …

Influence Of The Type Of Pollen Diet On The Survival, Body Weight, And Immune Response In The African Honeybee, Michael N.K. Muturi, Joel L. Bargul, H. Michael G. Lattorff Jun 2022

Influence Of The Type Of Pollen Diet On The Survival, Body Weight, And Immune Response In The African Honeybee, Michael N.K. Muturi, Joel L. Bargul, H. Michael G. Lattorff

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Pollen nutrition is critical for the development and well-being of the honeybee. Previous studies have compared the effect of pollen and carbohydrate-only diet on honeybee physiology. The effect of a monofloral versus polyfloral diet on the African honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) is poorly understood. This knowledge is critical as diversity-rich habitats are being altered to less diverse environments through increased urbanization and intensified agricultural activities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we report how lowly diverse (LD) and highly diverse (HD) pollen diets influence honeybee life-history traits and physiology. To achieve this, we fed caged bees with the two pollen diets …

Field Effectiveness Of Metarhizium Anisopliae And Pheromone Traps Against Phthorimaea Absoluta On Tomato In Tanzania, Never Zekeya, Thomas Dubois, Jason Smith, Srinivasan Ramasamy

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Phthorimaea absoluta is an invasive pest and a major threat to tomato production in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. Although chemical pesticides are commercially available and used locally, mis- and overuse can cause detrimental effects on human and environmental health, and can lead to emergence of resistance among populations of P. absoluta within a short period, increasing production costs among smallholder farmers in Tanzania. The effectiveness of alternative options, such as the use of biological control agents and pheromone traps, has not yet been studied in the field in sub-Saharan Africa. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a commercially available …

Blood-Red Colour As A Prey Choice Cue For Mosquito Specialist Predators, Lisa A. Taylor, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Specialist predators are innately and distinctively proficient at targeting specific prey types. This is enabled by behavioural, perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that can only be understood using carefully designed experiments. Evarcha culicivora is an East African jumping spider that feeds on vertebrate blood acquired indirectly by actively targeting blood-carrying female mosquitoes as preferred prey. Here we asked whether these spiders use the colour red to identify this prey. In Objective 1, we used spectrophotometry to document the changing redness of mosquitoes in the first 17 h following blood meals. In Objective 2, we used vision-based choice tests to document how …

Impact Of Invasive Insects On Native Insect Communities, Taiadjana M. Fortuna, Philippe Le Gall, Samir Mezdour, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Several biophysical factors are leading to the loss of biodiversity, among them the dominance of exotic invasive species on native communities is important. Their dominance can lead to changes in the structure of insect communities, by competing and displacing native species to other crops or habitats. These changes can impact the herbivore's natural enemies in invaded areas by diverging them from suitable herbivores and altering their biological control process. The development of edible insects and derived products at an industrial scale can also have an impact on the local fauna by the risks of spillover and accidental release in nature. …

Plant Growth And Defense Traits In Sorghum Bicolor’S Response To Chilo Partellus In The Tropics, Adekunle W. Adesanya, Maria Isabel Gomez, Kimberly Morrell, Charles Midega, Zeyaur Khan, André Kessler, Katja Poveda

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In order to meet the increasing demands from an exploding human population, sustainable agriculture relies on the availability of crop varieties with high yields and optimal defenses to pests. However, ample work has suggested that domesticated plants could have reduced defenses at the expense of increased biomass or yield, and these potential trade-offs can vary among plant species and genotypes. Herbivory coping mechanisms such as tolerance and resistance can be expressed differently among plant genotypes, with variable relationships and inherent fitness costs. Knowledge of the connection between growth and defense mechanisms in cultivated plants is still limited, especially in tropical …
