Trypanosomes are important global livestock and human pathogens of public health importance. Elucidating the chemical mechanisms of trypanosome-relevant host interactions can enhance the design and development of a novel, next-generation trypanosomosis diagnostics. However, it is unknown how trypanosome infection affects livestock volatile odors. Here, we show that Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax infections induced dihydro-β- ionone and junenol, while abundance of dihydro-α-ionone, phenolics, p-cresol, and 3-propylphenol significantly elevated in cow urine. These biomarkers of trypanosome infection are conserved in cow breath and the urine metabolites of naturally infected cows, regardless of population, diet, or environment differences. Furthermore, treating trypanosome-infected cows …

Deep models are powerful in capturing the complex and non-linear relationship buried in brain imaging data. However, the huge number of parameters in deep models can easily overfit given limited imaging data samples. In this work, we proposed a cross-domain transfer learning method to solve the insufficient data problem in brain imaging domain by leveraging the knowledge learned in natural image domain. Specifically, we employed ViT as the backbone and firstly pretrained it using ImageNet-21K dataset and then transferred to the brain imaging dataset. A slice-wise convolution embedding method was developed to improve the standard patch operation in vanilla ViT. …

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects an estimated 18 million individuals in the U.S. adult population. Numerous research findings indicate that OSA has significant adverse effects on the cardiac health. Current method of assessing the severity of OSA using apnea hypopnea index (AHI) which is the average count of apneic events per hour of sleep does not reflect how OSA affects the cardiovascular system health. In this study, we investigate the possibility of analyzing the nocturnal Electrocardiography (ECG) signal to assess the adverse impact of sleep apnea events on the heart. Our approach focuses on determining whether nocturnal cardiac arrhythmia is …

We present multiple methods based on computer vision and deep learning to automate the task of ”Balancing on one foot”. This is one of the Activate Test of Embodied Cognition (ATEC) tasks used to measure cognitive skills in children through physical activity. A dataset of 27 children performing the ATEC task is used to train and validate the deep learning models used to automate the task. As opposed to most balance identification systems that use sensors, our proposed approach relies only on computer vision which can be easily deployed at home or classroom environment, is portable, and cheap. Our proposed …

In this paper, a self-supervised approach is used to obtain an effective human activity representation using a limited set of annotated data. This research is aimed on acquiring human activity representation in order to improve the accuracy of classifying videos of human activities in the NTU RGB+D 120 dataset. The effectiveness of various self-supervised approaches, as well as a supervised method, is studied. The results reveal that when the training set gets smaller, the performance of supervised learning approaches diminishes, whereas self-supervised methods maintain their performance by utilizing unlabeled data.

The fact that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has the lowest labor force participation rate for women in the world has been extensively studied, but discrimination in pay against working women has received considerably less attention. Using recently available datasets, this study examines the distribution of wages (inequality) across men and women employed in the public versus the private sector in Egypt. The analysis shows that because working women tend to be more educated than working men, the gender wage gap would have been larger if women had the same endowments. Quantile regressions and recentered influence functions …

Egypt: How And Why A Heavily Indebted Country In The 1980s Emerged Solvent, Adel Beshai, Maryam Abouzeid

Faculty Journal Articles

This article deals with Egypt's debt crisis experience of the 1980s, which marked its own place in history. By the 1980s Egypt had a savings-investment gap; an export import gap; and a gap between government revenue and expenditure. The textbook answer was the Washington Consensus. Towards the end of the 1980s Egypt's military debt plus an interest rate of 15 per cent put the country in a situation where it wanted the debt to be cancelled. The USA responded that debt forgiveness wouldn’t be possible given the laws of the land. However, with Egypt’s participation in the liberation of Kuwait …

This article introduces an intervention framework to build the capacity of Lebanese youth to participate in effectively preserving Beirut’s heritage. Despite the current sectarian politics, enabling the youth to voice their narratives of the lived everyday contestation could herald their substantial contribution to the city’s urban reconciliation and peace-making process with the past. Through interviews and focus groups within the wider academic community, NGOs, and activists in Lebanon, the youth reflected on their interpretations of contestation and which elements of the local contested heritage are authentic. We argue that such authenticity is gained through lived space and experience, as we …

Chemical provinces were defined on Mars a decade ago using orbital nuclear spectroscopy of K, Th, Fe, Si, Ca, Cl, and H2O. However, past multivariate analyses yielded three sets of provinces, suggesting methodologic variability. Province-stability to the inclusion of Al and S is also unknown, presenting additional uncertainties for geologic insight. Here we consolidate key multivariate methods to define the first cross-validated provinces. In southern highlands, the highly incompatible K and Th show non-uniform distribution with higher values in mid Noachian and Hesperian than late Noachian – early Hesperian volcanic terrains. Silica- and Al-depletion trends from Noachian to Amazonian indicate …

Dolichogenidea gelechiidivoris (Marsh) (Syn. Apanteles gelechiidivoris) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a konoibiont larval endoparasitoid of the South American tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), was imported into Kenya in 2017 for the first classical biological control of T. absoluta in Africa. We determined the thermal thresholds of D. gelechiidivoris, with T. absoluta as host, using life cycle simulation modelling. Life-table data of D. gelechiidivoris were generated at six constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C, 65 ± 5% RH, and 12L: 12D photoperiod). Multiple non-linear functions were fitted to model some aspects of the biology of the parasitoid, including its …

Over the last 30 years, the global positioning system (GPS) tracking collars have significantly enhanced livestock grazing behavior studies. Practices designed to understand and improve livestock grazing distribution can now be accurately and cost-effectively monitored with GPS tracking. The behavior and spatiotemporal microhabitat selection of Mashona cattle relative to the season in a semi-free-range grazing system was evaluated using a low‐cost GPS herd activity monitoring (GPSHAM) collar. The GPSHAM automatically logged the position of the lead cow at 20-second intervals over a 7–hour daily grazing period. Additionally, the GPS data was complemented by visually observing the lead cow during daylight …

Stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) provide pollination services to crops and produce high–quality honey. The application of agrochemicals during the management of crop pests is an increasing threat to pollinators and the ecosystem services they provide. Biopesticides are considered as better alternatives; however, there is limited evidence of their impact on stingless bees. We evaluated the effect of the most widely used African fungal biopesticide (Metarhizium anisopliae ICIPE 69) on mortality, foraging behavior and pollination success of the African stingless bee Meliponula ferruginea under semi-field conditions. Colonies of M. ferruginea were introduced into four 24 m2 greenhouse compartments containing blooming cucumber …

Practical Efficient Microservice Autoscaling With Qos Assurance, Md Rajib Hossen, Mohammad A. Islam, Kishwar Ahmed

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Cloud applications are increasingly moving away from monolithic services to agile microservices-based deployments. However, efficient resource management for microservices poses a significant hurdle due to the sheer number of loosely coupled and interacting components. The interdependencies between various microservices make existing cloud resource autoscaling techniques ineffective. Meanwhile, machine learning (ML) based approaches that try to capture the complex relationships in microservices require extensive training data and cause intentional SLO violations. Moreover, these ML-heavy approaches are slow in adapting to dynamically changing microservice operating environments. In this paper, we propose PEMA (Practical Efficient Microservice Autoscaling), a lightweight microservice resource manager that …
