Objectives We estimate adult age distributions from Unar 1 and Unar 2, two late Umm an-Nar (2400-2100 BCE) tombs in the modern-day Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. These collective tombseach contained hundreds of skeletons in commingled, fragmented, and variably cremated states. Previous studies placed the vast majority of this mortuary community in a generalized “adult” category, as have most analyses of similar tombs from this period. We sought to test how adult age estimation methods compare in identifying young, middle, and old age individuals in commingled assemblages.

Materials and Methods We employed Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) and traditional …

The Cariaco Basin, located off eastern Venezuela in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, is the world's largest marine anoxic basin and the site of one of the longest-running oceanographic studies on record. The CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program collected various oceanographic parameters from 1995 until 2017 at the Cariaco station (10.50° N, 64.67° W). The Cariaco Basin exhibits pronounced seasonal and interannual variations in hydrographic properties and primary production due to seasonal coastal upwelling. Additionally, due to its restricted circulation and high primary production, the basin is anoxic below approximately 250 meters.

Monthly oceanographic cruises were conducted aboard the R/V Hermano Ginés …

Tuberculosis endometritis is a pathological diagnosis and has been always over shadowed by pelvic tuberculosis. It is usually asymptomatic, but patients could complain of menstrual irregularity and per vaginal discharge. We report a case of a 37-year-old female who presented with per vaginal discharge for 2 years. Histopathology showed numerous caseating and non-caseating granulomas with plasma cells, Ziehl–Neelsen stain for acid fast bacillus is positive, and she was initiated on anti-tuberculosis treatment. On subsequent follow-up visits, patient was doing well with complete resolution of symptoms. Genital tuberculosis is usually caused by reactivation of organism from systemic distribution during primary infection. …

Do Family Firms Issue More Readable Annual Reports? Evidence From The United States, Qunfeng Liao, Bin Srinidhi, Ke Wang Jan 2023

Do Family Firms Issue More Readable Annual Reports? Evidence From The United States, Qunfeng Liao, Bin Srinidhi, Ke Wang

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Using a sample of 22,442 firm-year observations for 3,721 U.S. listed firms, we show that family firms, on average, issue annual reports with higher readability than non-family firms. Higher readability could occur due to lower obfuscation or less information conveyance. By controlling complexity and choosing readability measures linked to obfuscation, we attribute the higher readability to lower obfuscation. Our investigation into the heterogeneity in family firms shows that the positive effect of family control on reporting readability exists for eponymous family firms but not for non-eponymous family firms. We also find that family firms managed by founders or heirs issue …

Older adults and caregivers play an essential role in medication safety; however, self-perception of their and health professionals' roles in medication safety is not well-understood. The objective of our study was to identify the roles of patients, providers, and pharmacists in medication safety from the perspective of older adults. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were held with 28 community-dwelling older adults over 65 years who took five or more prescription medications daily. Results suggest that older adults' self-perceptions of their role in medication safety varied widely. Older adults perceived that self-learning about their medications and securing them are critical to avoiding medication-related …

The Oedipus Complex In Fiction, Mohamad Abou Adel Jan 2023

The Oedipus Complex In Fiction, Mohamad Abou Adel

CoHSS Faculty Work

This study aims to know how The Bookseller's Notebooks intersects with The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Oedipus Rex. We analyze the novelist's proficiency at expressing contemporary human issues innovatively and artistically, focusing on the emotional struggle between parents and children. In particular, the study sheds light on the emotional and social struggles suffered by a marginalized, despised, and rejected societal group, namely illegitimate children (foundlings), examining the unhealthy social relationship between fathers and children in the light of the intertextuality technique regarding the theme, characters, and events between Jalal Barjas's The Bookseller's Notebooks and Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of …

Stochastic Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Model In Green Environment With Customer Satisfaction, Nayera Elgharably, Said Easa, Ashraf Nassef, Ashraf El Damatty Jan 2023

Stochastic Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Model In Green Environment With Customer Satisfaction, Nayera Elgharably, Said Easa, Ashraf Nassef, Ashraf El Damatty

Faculty Journal Articles

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is one of the most studied combinatorial optimization problems in operations research that are classified as NP-hard. Introducing uncertainty to the problem increases the complexity of solving such problems. Sources of uncertainty in a VRP can be travel times, service times, and unpredictable demands of customers. Ignoring these sources may lead to inaccurate modeling of the VRP. Moreover, the area of green logistics and the environmental issues associated received significant attention. This paper aims to study the stochastic multi-objective Vehicle Routing Problem in a green environment. The stochastic Green VRP (GVRP) presented deals with three …

Femalization Of The Genre Of Literature; Novel Owners Of The Novel, Seyyedeh Zahra Nozen Jan 2023

Femalization Of The Genre Of Literature; Novel Owners Of The Novel, Seyyedeh Zahra Nozen

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Unfairly female authors have been deprived of the title of “mothers” of English Novel and “fathers” have been taken as the sole male owners of the Novel. While not only the first professional novelist was a woman but the numbers of female novelists exceed that of the males. Female authors indefatigably undertook the process of femalization the genre of literature and the current study conducted through the qualitative research and text-analysis methods together with historical approach tried to put light to the fact that how female novelists contributed to the great genre of literature and strengthen it due to their …

Adjusting Parenting Roles And Work Expectations Among Women With Children During Covid-19, Saltanat Childress, Catherine Labrenz, Erin Findley, Philip Baiden

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

This study explores mothers' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on stressors, parenting roles, and work expectations. Qualitative analysis of open-ended interviews with a diverse group of 44 mothers in the United States generated two main themes: adjusting parenting roles and career concerns for mothers. Findings reveal that mothers have internalized strong intrafamily expectations to shoulder the primary responsibility for domestic labor and child care in addition to completing their work obligations and experienced institutional gender bias in the expectations that employers have for female employees. The interviews highlight lower expectations for fathers' contributions to parenting under pandemic …

Safety And Academic Outcomes Of College Campus-Based Advocacy Services, Rachel Voth Schrag, Elizabeth Baumler, Dixie Hairston, Cynthia Jones, Leila Wood

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault, and stalking are consequential public health and safety issues with wide reaching impacts on emerging adults, including those on college campuses in the United States. In response to high rates of violence among college student populations, universities are developing campus-based advocacy (CBA) programs, which aim to support survivors of interpersonal violence through supportive connections, resource acquisition, and safety planning. However, little data exists related to their impact on key student-survivor outcomes. Thus, this study aims to understand (a) the approach CBA programs use to address safety and academic concerns of student-survivors, and (b) the …

The Professional Learning Community (PLC) model has been used to help faculty develop innovative teaching practices and diffuse effective strategies and resources throughout K-12 schools. Yet, whether and how PLCs influence research-focused higher education institutions remain unknown. Drawing on existing research on PLCs and the social network theory, this mixed-methods study investigated how participants shared what they learned during their time in the program to build greater capacity and the perceived benefits and weaknesses of the PLC model. We conducted semi-structured interviews (n=8) and a survey (n'='77) among current PLC fellows and alumni at a large research university. The results …

Differential Cue Weighting In Mandarin Sibilant Production, Ivy Hauser Jan 2023

Differential Cue Weighting In Mandarin Sibilant Production, Ivy Hauser

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Individual talkers vary in their relative use of different cues to signal phonological contrast. Previous work provides limited and conflicting data on whether such variation is modulated by cue trading or individual differences in speech style. This paper examines differential cue weighting patterns in Mandarin sibilants as a test case for these hypotheses. Standardized Mandarin exhibits a three-way place contrast between retroflex, alveopalatal, and alveolar sibilants with individual differences in relative weighting of spectral center of gravity (COG) and the second formant of the following vowel (F2). In results from a speech production task, cue weights of COG and F2 …

Investigating The Diversity And Distribution Of Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems In The Chagos Archipelago, Clara Diaz Jan 2023

Investigating The Diversity And Distribution Of Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems In The Chagos Archipelago, Clara Diaz

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, 30-150 m) have received increasing attention from the scientific community over the past two decades, as their significance has been recognised in terms of biodiversity, distribution, and ecological value. However, MCEs remain relatively unexplored compared to their shallow-water counterparts. They are also under-protected and under-represented in marine spatial planning, despite meeting the international criteria used to identify priority areas for conservation policies. One reason for the imbalance between their high ecological value and their low level of protection is that baseline data on MCEs is largely missing to date. Furthermore, research efforts have been unevenly distributed, …
