Learning By The Case Method, Danielle Dimitrov Jan 2023

Learning By The Case Method, Danielle Dimitrov

Open Course Materials

Case study learning is best implemented with higher level undergraduate and graduate students in the form of discussion-based learning. Discussions are a perfect example of the cognitive domain of learning that pulls from experiential learning and provides the best transfer of learning (TOL) for adults.

In this OER, you will find examples of two cases, and their implementation in a 3-credit fully online course in Canvas. The discussion of these cases was framed with concepts from an organizational behavior textbook.

Forelimb Motion And Orientation In The Ornithischian Dinosaurs Styracosaurus And Thescelosaurus, And Its Implications For Locomotion And Other Behavior, Philip J. Senter, Jared J. Mackey Jan 2023

Forelimb Motion And Orientation In The Ornithischian Dinosaurs Styracosaurus And Thescelosaurus, And Its Implications For Locomotion And Other Behavior, Philip J. Senter, Jared J. Mackey

College of Health, Science, and Technology

The range of motion (ROM) in the forelimb has previously been studied in many saurischian dinosaur species but only a few ornithischian dinosaur species. Here, we fill in some of the blanks in current knowledge of ornithischian forelimb function by investigating the range of shoulder motion and the orientation of the humerus, radius, and ulna in the centrosaurine ceratopsid Styracosaurus albertensis and the basal orni-thopod Thescelosaurus sp. Manual manipulation of forelimb bones, using the margins of bony articular surfaces to delimit the range of motion, shows that humeral ROM and forearm orientation in S. albertensis resemble those previously found in …

Restudy Of Shoulder Motion In The Theropod Dinosaur Mononykus Olecranus (Alvarezsauridae), Philip J. Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Background: Range of motion in the forelimb of the Upper Cretaceous theropod dinosaur Mononykus olecranus, a member of the family Alvarezsauridae, has previously been investigated. However, the method used to investigate range of motion at the shoulder in M. olecranus did not follow the standardized procedure used in subsequent studies. The latter procedure yields more reliable results, and its standardization provides that its results are directly comparable to the results of similar studies in other species. I therefore reinvestigated the range of motion at the shoulder in M. olecranus, using the latter procedure. Methods: Casts of the left scapula and …

In Situ Carbon Uptake Of Marine Macrophytes Is Highly Variable Among Species, Taxa, And Morphology, Julian Jacobs, Lucian Himes, Florybeth Flores La Valle Dr. Jan 2023

In Situ Carbon Uptake Of Marine Macrophytes Is Highly Variable Among Species, Taxa, And Morphology, Julian Jacobs, Lucian Himes, Florybeth Flores La Valle Dr.

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biology Program

Macroalgae form important coastal ecosystems and are considered to be highly

productive, yet individual macrophyte carbon uptake rates are

poorly documented and methodologies for in situ assessments of productivity

are not well developed. In this study, we employ a 13C enrichment method in

benthic chambers to calculate carbon uptake rates and assess d13C signatures of

a large stock of nearshore benthic macroalgae varying in taxa and morphology in

Southern California. Our objectives are to 1) identify the variability of carbon

uptake and inorganic carbon use among individuals of the same species or

morphology and speculate how macroalgae might respond to …

Demystifying Native Plants Polycultures, David Hopman Jan 2023

Demystifying Native Plants Polycultures, David Hopman

Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications - Archive

Landscape architects have an important duty to be forward leaning stewards of the environment in the development process. There is also an increasingly important imperative to reverse the ecological decline that has multiplied the extinction rate of species 1,000-fold since the advent of the industrial revolution. This lecture addresses both these issues with an evidence-based presentation on why landscape architects must address ecology in metropolitan areas and not focus almost entirely on environmental concerns such as global warming, carbon sequestration, clean air and clean water. If landscape architects do not become advocates for native plants, animals and regional ecologies, there …

Predicting Antimicrobial Resistance Of Bacterial Pathogens Using Time Series Analysis, Jeonghoon Kim, Ruwini Rupasinghe, Avishai Halev, Chao Huang, Shahbaz Rezaei, Maria J. Clavijo, Rebecca C. Robbins, Beatriz Martínez-López, Xin Liu Jan 2023

Predicting Antimicrobial Resistance Of Bacterial Pathogens Using Time Series Analysis, Jeonghoon Kim, Ruwini Rupasinghe, Avishai Halev, Chao Huang, Shahbaz Rezaei, Maria J. Clavijo, Rebecca C. Robbins, Beatriz Martínez-López, Xin Liu

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is arguably one of the major health and economic challenges in our society. A key aspect of tackling AMR is rapid and accurate detection of the emergence and spread of AMR in food animal production, which requires routine AMR surveillance. However, AMR detection can be expensive and time-consuming considering the growth rate of the bacteria and the most commonly used analytical procedures, such as Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing. To mitigate this issue, we utilized machine learning to predict the future AMR burden of bacterial pathogens. We collected pathogen and antimicrobial data from >600 farms in the …

Tea, Coffee And Cocoa - A Cultural Phenomenon In Azerbaijan, Hamlet Isaxanli

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Tea, coffee, and cocoa are all popular beverages in Azerbaijan, and each has its own unique cultural significance. Tea is the most popular beverage in Azerbaijan and is often consumed throughout the day. It is also a common accompaniment to meals and social gatherings. Coffee is also popular in Azerbaijan but is more typically consumed as a morning beverage. Cocoa is less popular than tea or coffee but is still enjoyed by many Azerbaijanis. Bolster et al. 2024 AJBA

Objectives We estimate adult age distributions from Unar 1 and Unar 2, two late Umm an-Nar (2400-2100 BCE) tombs in the modern-day Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. These collective tombseach contained hundreds of skeletons in commingled, fragmented, and variably cremated states. Previous studies placed the vast majority of this mortuary community in a generalized “adult” category, as have most analyses of similar tombs from this period. We sought to test how adult age estimation methods compare in identifying young, middle, and old age individuals in commingled assemblages.

Materials and Methods We employed Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) and traditional …
