In this paper we consider the existence of best approximants in modular function spaces by elements of sublattices. Modular function spaces are the natural generalization of Lp, p > 0, Orlicz, Lorentz, and Köthe spaces. Let ϱ be a pseudomodular, Lϱ the corresponding modular function space, and C a sublattice of Lϱ. Given a function f ∈ Lϱ we consider the minimization problem of finding h ∈ C such that ϱ(f − h) = inf{f − g: g ∈ C}. Such an h is called a best approximant. Problems of finding best approximants are important in approximation theory and probability theory. …

Putnam On 'Empirical Objects', Gorden Steinhoff

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Putnam claims that the objects we experience are “mind-dependent” and “theory-dependent”. He also writes that they are “constructed within our theories”. It is difficult to say what he means by these claims. I conclude that, according to Putnam, “empirical objects” do not really exist. But I attempt to show the sense in which he can be considered a realist about these objects. Putnam has adopted an idealism which allows for the correctness of realist claims within appropriate contexts. I also discuss Putnam's solution to the problem of how we manage to refer to “empirical objects”. I argue that this solution, …

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1989.

This book explores the building of expert systems using logic for knowledge representation and meta-level inference for control. It presents research done by members of the expert systems group of the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Edinburgh, often in collaboration with others, based on two hypotheses: that logic is a suitable knowledge representation language, and that an explicit representation of the control regime of the theorem prover has many advantages. A Coupling-Of-Modes Model For Saw Transducers With Arbitrary Reflectivity Weighting, Benjamin P. Abbott

An accurate and numerically efficient model for SAW devices incorporating transducers with non-uniformly weighted internal reflections has been developed. The model describes each of the device's transducers using a three port characterization (two acoustic ports and one electric port). These three port descriptions are combined to obtain the complete device's description.

The three port description of a transducer is obtained by representing the response of the non-uniform transducer as that of a set of cascaded uniform sections. The three port solutions for a uniform section of transducer are presented as the results of a coupling-of-modes (COM) analysis. These solutions include …

A two-dimensional finite element model based on Galerkin's weighted residual approach and incorporating an upstream weighting technique was developed to predict the simultaneous transformation and transport of nitrogen species. The nitrogen cycle used in the analyses assumes first-order rate coefficients for nitrification, denitrification, immobilization and mineralization between the nitrogen species NH +4, NO -3, organic-N and denitrified fractions. The NO -3-N component in the soil solution was assumed to have negligible adsorption on exchange sites while adsorption of NH +4 was assumed to be represented by a Freundlich type nonlinear isotherm ( S = kdCp). A museum in Chicago to house a replica of a Viking ship sits between the edge of Lake Michigan and a tree-covered park. The project responds with a straight edge at the lake, and reacts with a lyrically rhythmic twisting form that echoes the branching and undulations of the trees in the park. Mood experience is comprised of at least two elements: the direct experience of the mood and a meta-level of experience that consists of thoughts and feelings about the mood. In Study 1, a two-dimensional structure for the direct experience of mood (Watson & Tellegen, 1985) was tested for its fit to the responses of 1,572 subjects who each completed one of the three different mood scales, including a brief scale developed to assist future research. In vitro studies suggest that neonates and adults may have different cardiac chronotropic responses to a-adrenergic stimulation. To investigate these differences in vivo, three groups of dogs were studied. Group I = 12 puppies, ages 3-7 days; group II = 12 puppies ages 8-15 days, and group III = seven adult dogs. Heart rate and blood pressure determinations were made in the control setting and then after combined β-adrenergic and parasympathetic blockade (propranolol 0.6 mg/kg and bilateral vagotomies). Alpha-stimulation was then achieved with phenylephrine given in doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 10.0 μg/kg/ min. A second, high dose of propranolol …
