Word Ways

A pangrammatic word ladder is one which contains at least one of every letter of the alphabet. Since letters in a ladder can be changed only one at a time, a minimum-length ladder of n-letter words contains 26 - n + 1 words.

Following "To Free Up a Wealth of Shining Promise" in the November 1989 Word Ways, I constructed another 300 anagrams of WHAT IS THE MEANING OR PURPOSE OF LIE: 75 quatrains extending what originator John Henrick envisions as "a significant collection in its own right." Having passed the 500 mark, I propose to limit annual output to 1000 anagrams so that Henrick may more easily keep track. Perhaps he might comment on the number of considers "significant"? After glimpsing the vast potential, I now see a million anagrams as insignificant, requiring a mere man-millenium of title shuffling.

A Numerical Model For Areal Migration Of Water And Light Hydrocarbon In Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker, R. J. Lenhard

A finite element model has been developed to simulate simultaneous flow of water and light hydrocarbon in an areal flow region of an unconfined aquifer for analyses of hydrocarbon spreading from subsurface leaks or spills and for use in design of free product recovery systems. Vertically integrated governing equations for water and oil flow are employed which assume local vertical equilibrium and negligible gas pressure gradients. Multiple water and free product recovery wells are handled as internal type-I boundary conditions by stipulating air-oil table elevation and free product height with corrections to convert grid averaged nodal heads to actual well …

P.F. Strawson represents a philosophical tradition in Kant scholarship. Strawson is opposed to Kant’s transcendental idealism, but he finds much of value in Kant’s metaphysical views. Strawson’s goal in The Bounds of Sense is to separate what is of value in Kant’s thought from Kant’s transcendental idealism. His dislike of transcendental idealism is based upon a certain interpretation which Henry Allison calls “the standard picture”. This picture is shared by several of Kant’s commentators, but is best exemplified in the work of Strawson and H.A. Prichard.

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1990.

This paper looks at ways for a trainer giving a seminar to increase the chances that participants will retain the material presented and use it in their work. It also looks at the techniques which make information memorable and accessible in the long run. Cognitive research provides some answers. For information to be accessible, it must be learned along with its potential uses so that connections between different sections of networks can be established. This study of iconicity if Korean has examined the iconic relationship (non-arbitrariness) between form and meaning in phonology, morphology, and syntax. There are many pairs of linguistic expressions that carry roughly the same meaning. The two members of the pair exhibit different lengths or sizes: one of the pair is short (or small), i.e., the Short-Form, the other of the pair is long (or large), i.e., the Long-Form. Murine monoclonal antibodies, developed following immunization with human protein C, were characterized for their ability tboin d antigen in thpe resence of either CaClz or excess EDTA. Three stablec lones were obtained which produced antiboditehsa t bound to protein C only itnh e presence of EDTA. Allt hree antibodies bound to the light choafi np rotein C on immunoblots and also bound to the homologous proteins factor X and prothrombin in solid-phase radioimmunoassays. The development of successful urban tree plantings has at least four critical components: 1) expectations and goals appropriate for cities, 2) an analysis of site-specific environmental conditions, 3) selection of taxa responsive to that set of site conditions and 4) a regular program of management. The issues involved that are both conceptual (such as our attitudes towards trees) and technical (such as the size of a planting space or the level of summer irrigation).

Marketing, more so than any other business discipline, has been criticized by people for hurting consumers, society as a whole, and other business firms. Deceptive prices, high advertising and distribution costs, high pressure selling and unsafe products are common complaints. This article reviews some of the issues involved. It deals with marketing ethics and its problems and then discusses the role of ethics in the marketing mix. The article calls for marketers to adhere to ethical standards of conduct or face the consequences.

In this paper we consider the existence of best approximants in modular function spaces by elements of sublattices. Modular function spaces are the natural generalization of Lp, p > 0, Orlicz, Lorentz, and Köthe spaces. Let ϱ be a pseudomodular, Lϱ the corresponding modular function space, and C a sublattice of Lϱ. Given a function f ∈ Lϱ we consider the minimization problem of finding h ∈ C such that ϱ(f − h) = inf{f − g: g ∈ C}. Such an h is called a best approximant. Problems of finding best approximants are important in approximation theory and probability theory. …
