The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. Dynamics Of Sediment And Contaminant Transport In The Hudson River Estuary: Evidence From Sediment Distributions Of Naturally Occurring Radionuclides, David J. Hirschberg, P. Chin, Huan Feng, J. K. Cochran

Near surface (< 10 cm) sediment distributions of 234Th sampled multiple times at five locations along the axis of the Hudson Estuary from the Upper Bay of New York to Haverstraw Bay are compared with 210Pb data from longer cores at the same locations. The comparison indicates that while there is little net sediment accumulation anywhere except at one location in the Upper Bay, near surface sediment in this reach of the estuary is mobile on short (months) time scales. The sediment appears to be physically mixed rather than bioturbated. Comparison of the sediment inventories of 234Th with calculated water column production indicates short time scale (months) variability in 234Th deposition. Some parts of the bottom have 234Th inventories in excess of local production but these appear to be balanced by 234Th deficient area, resulting in a general equilibrium. Sediment inventories of Pb, Cu, and Zn normalized to 210Pb show no evidence of a uniquely urban source of these metals to the lower estuary. Silver distributions in sediment indicate a possible source of silver from New York City, probably related to sewage inputs.

Texas counties vary dramatically across socio-economic factors. They range in population from 127 in Loving County to 2.9 million in Harris County. Population densities range from less than one person per square mile to 2,175 people per square mile. Some economies are nearly exclusively agrarian, others are heavily dependent upon oil and gas and yet others closely reflect the national economy. These, and other variations, create difficulties when comparing the public fiscal health of the counties; ie a county's ability to generate revenues for public goods and services. Despite advances in family and child research over the past decade, most studies continue to examine dyadic subsystems of the larger family system rather than the full family context. With few exceptions, empirical support for the utility of whole-family analysis in child development research remains to be established. This sourcebook draws together diverse studies of whole-family (2-parent) dynamics to explore the potential of this paradigm for understanding individual variability in children's early social and emotional development. A baseline detection method has been developed that identifies and defines event transitions for whole-cell voltage or current ('transient') events that are produced by the activity of ion channel ensembles. The method utilizes a variety of iterative techniques that independently determine, for each event, several output parameters that are ultimately referrable to the mean and Variance of each pre-event baseline. Examination of miniature endplate potentials using the baseline detection method provided the following output parameters for each transient event: pre-event mean and variance; rise time; peak amplitude and duration; a determination of whether the decay phase was best fit by …

Changes in foliage temperature with vapour pressure deficit and water stress for three shrub species were investigated for use in irrigation scheduling in landscapes. Midday leaf-minus-air temperature (T1-Ta) and vapour pressure deficit were monitored seasonally for prostrate juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’), upright juniper (J. chinensis ‘Hetzi’, and dwarf red-stem dogwood (Cornus sericea ‘Kelseyii’), positioned as isolated plants or in a massed setting. There was an inverse baseline relationship between T1-Taand vapour pressure deficit for all species and both spacings under well-watered conditions. This was consistent with baselines reported for herbaceous crops, but with substantially more scatter. Baseline relationships between spacings …

Olfactory receptor neurons present in two morphological sensillum types on the male Schistocerca gregaria antenna were for the first time investigated physiologically when stimulated with behaviourally relevant odours. Neurons present in trichoid/basiconic sensilla showed clear excitatory responses to compounds present in the male-produced aggregation pheromone and also to a plant produced compound. Sensilla could be categorised physiologically according to the responses of their receptor neurons to the tested stimuli. Also receptor neurons present in sensilla coeloconica responded to aggregation pheromone components, but always in an inhibitory fashion. Female Cotesia flavipes Cameron and Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) were attracted to odors in a Y-tube olfactometer from uninfested maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)]. and napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach). In dual choice tests. Cotesia flavipes showed a preference for maize over sorghum, while maize and napier grass were equally attractive. In contrast, Cotesia sesamiae preferred volatiles from sorghum and napier grass over those from maize. The two parasitoids were significantly more attracted to maize infested with the stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Chilo orichalcociliellus Strand, Sesamia calamistis Hampson, and Busseola fusca (Fuller), than uninfested maize. Observing the opposition behavior of ingress-and-sting larval parasitoids of lepidopteran stemborers is difficult due to the cryptic feeding behavior of the hosts. A method for observing their opposition behavior was developed. An individual stemborer larva was introduced into a glass tube (0.7 cm in diameter; 7 cm in length) which contained a piece of maize stem (0.5-0.6 cm in diameter; 4-5 cm in length). The larva was allowed 14-20 h to feed on the maize and produce frass before introducing a single adult female parasitoid. Inheritance of aphid resistance and allelic relationships among sources of resistance was studied in the parents, F1, F2, F3, and backcross populations of cowpea crosses. Each 4-day old seedling was infested with five fourth-instar aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded 14-16 days after infestation when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data from eight crosses between resistant and susceptible cowpea cultivars indicated that aphid resistance was inherited as a monogenic dominant trait. Segregation data from crosses among eight resistant cultivars indicated that one or two loci and modifier(s) were involved in the expression of resistance to aphids. It was suggested …

Trap catch size was used to investigate whether Glossina pallidipes and G. longipennis could distinguish between the urine of the African buffalo, cattle, and waterbuck at Nguruman in southwest Kenya, NG2G traps baited with aged urine of these bovids caught significantly more of each tsetse than did the controls. The mean catch of either tsetse species in traps baited with aged urine of buffalo and cattle (tsetse hosts) and waterbuck (a nonhost) did not differ significantly. Aged urine from both tsetse hosts (buffalo and cattle) and the nonhost (waterbuck) was found to contain 4-cresol and 3-n-propylphenol in about the same …

The presence of pheromones produced by larvae of Glossina morsitans morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, which attract gravid females and result in aggregation of pupae, is confirmed. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to larviposit over moist sand conditioned by previously allowing larvae to pupariate in it. Similar results were obtained with filter papers contaminated with the prepupariation excretions of larvae and with volatiles collected from larvae prior to pupariation. n-Pentadecane and n-dodecane were identified as the dominant electrophysiologically active components of the larviposition pheromones of G. m. morsitans and G. m. centralis, respectively, by GC-EAD and GC-MS analysis …
