Membrane feeding studies were conducted to determine the effects of raw juices and chemical extracts of leaves of aphid-resistant (ICV-12) and aphid- susceptible (ICV-1) cultivars of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)], on the survival, growth, and reproduction of cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch. Life table and demographic statistics of the cohort population and subsequent generations were estimated. Compared to ICV-1, the leaf juices and chemical extracts of ICV-12 exhibited significant (P ≤ 0.05) adverse effects on aphid survival, growth, and reproduction. Prospects For Biological Control Of Livestock Ticks, Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus And Amblyomma Variegatum, Using The Entomogenous Fungi Beauveria Bassiana And Metarhizium Anisopliae, Godwin P. Kaaya, Esther N. Mwangi, Elizabeth A. Ouna

Both Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae induced, approximately 30% mortalities in adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus feeding on rabbits while M. anisopliae induced a mortality of 37% in adult Amblyomma variegatum. Both fungal species induced reductions in engorgement weights, fecundity, and egg hatchability in adult A. variegatum. M. anisopliae reduced fecundity by 94% in A. variegatum. Furthermore, B. bassiana reduced egg hatchability to 0%, while 11% of the infected females failed to lay eggs. In Zebu cattle naturally infested, with R. appendiculatus in the field, both B. bassiana and M. anisopliae induced high mortalities ranging from 76-85%, a remarkable reduction in fecundity …

We assessed the reproductive responses of adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, Mononychellus tanajoa, on cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The oviposition rates increased with number of prey consumed per predator per day with a maximum of approximately two eggs per day for I. degenerans and four eggs per day for N. teke. The oviposition rate of N. teke was higher when consuming eggs than other prey stages. Neoseiulus teke was more efficient than I. degenerans in converting consumed prey into egg production. 1,8-Cineole was identified as one of the electrophysiologically active components of the volatiles from banana cultivars susceptible to the banana weevil. It was also shown to be an attractant for the banana weevil Comopolites sordidus in laboratory behavioural bioassays. The resistant cultivar did not contain 1,8-cineole. β-Phellandrene, which exhibited electrophysiological activity, but did not show any attraction to the banana weevil, was found only in the resistant banana cultivar.

The functional responses of pintonymph and adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, the cassava green mite (CGM), Mononychellus tanajoa, were studied on excised cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The responses obtained were predominantly sigmoid type III curves with the highest plateau when both stages of I. degenerans and N. teke were preying on CGM eggs. In all cases, the predation rate of the former species exceeded that of the latter. The empirical data were fitted by four different models. The suitability of 12 graminaceous weeds of ricefields as host plants for two rice leaffolders, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) and Marasmia patnalis Bradley (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was compared to a susceptible (IR36) and a moderately resistant (TKM6) rice variety in laboratory and greenhouse tests. Although rice was the most preferred host of the two leaffolder species, their responses to the test weeds varied significantly. Cnaphalocrocis medinalis responded better to most of the test weeds than did M. patnalis, suggesting a wider host range for C. medinalis. Gregarious nymphs of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forsk.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were more attracted to volatiles from mechanically damaged food plants used for rearing than to either the undamaged or damaged food plants not used as diet in Y-tube olfactometer assays. Comparative analysis of the volatile emissions from plants used for rearing and food plants not used for rearing, e.g. Sorghum bicolor, Pennisetum clandestinum, Schouwia thebaica, wheat (Triticum sp., var. 'Nyangumi'), Zygophyllum simplex, Heliotropium undulatum and Tribulus terrestris was carried out by GC, GC-EAD and GC-MS. Milk glands, dissected out and collected from Glossina morsitans centralis (Machado) females, artificially inoculated at the third-instar larval stage with a virus suspension obtained from hypertrophied salivary glands of wild-caught virus-infected Glossina pallidipes (Austen), were processed for routine electron microscopy and examined for pathological changes. They were compared to milk glands dissected out from normal female G.m. centralis at the same stage of pregnancy cycle. Upon dissection there were notable physical differences between control and virus-infected milk glands. Histologically, some areas of the gland developed severe degeneration while other areas developed less severe pathological changes. Ultrastructural studies revealed the presence …

We have studied the effect of shifting the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) from crowded to solitary conditions, or vice versa on the emission of the adult aggregation pheromone (as measured by released phenylacetonitrile) and compared this with changes in morphometrics. Adult males of the F0 generation resulting from shifting crowd-reared (gregarious) hoppers, fledglings or mature adults (aged 20-22 days after the final moult) to solitary conditions did not produce phenylacetonitrile, similar to solitary-reared adults. Conversely, adults of the F0 generation resulting from shifting solitary-reared (solitarious) hoppers, fledglings or mature adults to crowded conditions produced pheromone at levels which were …

This study examines the external and internal anatomy of the polypneustic (respiratory) lobes in 8 species of tsetse larvae (Diptera: Glossinidae). In the more primitive fusca group, the respiratory lobes are either ring-like (Glossina longipennis) or partially divided into 2 lobes (G. brevipalpis). Two distinctly separated lobes are present in the palpalis group (G. palpalis, G. tachinoides, G. fuscipes) and in the morsitans group (G. morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni). Tick resistance in three breeds of cattle, two indigenous breeds (Arssi and Boran) and one Boran × Friesian cross-breed, were compared following natural tick infestations at Abernossa ranch in Ethiopia. The local Arssi breed was found to have the highest tick resistance, followed by the Boran breed, whereas the Boran × Friesian was the least resistant. Over a period of 12 months, from October 1991 to September 1992, a total of 32 897 ticks composed of four genera were collected from the animals. Operator-splitting technique (OST) is a common mathematical approach used in the solution of the advection-dispersion-reaction equation (ADRE), especially in the presence of biological decay, where the scales of transport and biological decay are far apart. The OST introduces a time-lag between the advection-dispersion and reaction stages by splitting the ADRE causing a breakdown of the physics of the problem, thus limiting its applicability. In the first manuscript of this two-part series, the behavior of the inherent time-lag error in the operator-splitting technique has been discussed. However, the discussion has been limited to the advection-dispersion-reaction equation with first-order kinetics. In this manuscript, the discussion is extended to address the applicability of the operator-splitting technique in solving the advection-dispersion-reaction equation with Monod kinetics. The discussion also considers the two-species coupled transport problem. The results of the analysis show that the behavior of the time-lag error causing a mass balance error is rather similar to those observed with first-order kinetics. In a study to develop anti-tick pastures, the climbing behaviour of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus on Melinis minutiflora (molasses grass) was investigated. Experiments were done with cut green stems of grass, grass dried in the shade, grass dried in sunshine, grass washed in solvent and grass growing in a study plot. In all cases a common pasture grass, Pennisetum clandestinum (Kikuyu grass), was used as control. All instars of the tick avoided climbing on the green M. minutiflora whereas most larvae, nymphs and adults climbed on the control green P. clandestinum grass. Free-product recovery system designs for light hydrocarbon recovery were investigated to evaluate the effects of multiple-stage pumping, delayed startup, and uncertainty of key residual oil saturation input data using a vertically integrated three-phase flow model, ARMOS. The results obtained from a single well recovery system subjected to a given well location and uniform soil properties suggested that multiple-stage water pumping can enhance the recovery and provide optimal design conditions if cost and recovery oil volume are the targets. However, if containment of the spill area with simultaneous recovery is the target, then single-stage pumping still provides the optimal design. Delayed …

As a result of recent environmentalist attacks, environmental legislation, and a weakening economy, Southern California's Ganahl Lumber Company faces a situation which threatens its image, resources, financial viability, and survival. Using qualitative data gathering techniques (i.e., employee interviews and examinations of organizational documents), this study examines the ways in which Ganahl Lumber has responded to these concerns. Specifically, this study identifies whom Ganahl Lumber employees perceive to be their most important audiences and focuses on the different communication strategies that the com pany is using to influence these audiences. Total water use was 18.8% greater for hedgerow plantings of walnut trees than for conventionally spaced trees during years 2 through 7 of this study. Cumulative yield-and revenue-water use efficiencies were much greater with the hedgerows through year 5, but differences narrowed there-after. The hedgerows had greater total yield, but lower crop value due to smaller nuts. Although individual nut weight was strongly correlated with nut load, the relationship between nut weight and nut density was independent of tree spacing. Total gross and net hedgerow revenues were greater.

Shade acclimation response of Emerald Queen Norway maple street trees to variable irradiance levels in an urban setting was investigated. Specific leaf area, trunk growth, and crown density were measured in thirteen sites ranging from urban canyons in the business core to open exposures in residential areas of Seattle, Washington. Percentage of potential seasonal input of global shortwave radiation for each site was modeled based on the azimuth and elevation angles of the surrounding horizon topography. Building height in the business core reduced estimated potential seasonal irradiance to 27-90% of that for an unobstructed horizon topography, while those outside the …

A blood-meal-induced lectin (agglutinin) with proteolytic activity was isolated from midgut extracts of Glossina longipennis by a two-step procedure involving anion-exchange chromatography. It is a glycoprotein [native molecular weight (Mr, 61000±3000 da) composed of two noncovalently-linked subunits designated α (Mr, ∼27000 da) and β (Mr, ∼33000 da). The trypsin activity and the glycosyl residues were present on the α- and β-subunits, respectively. The native protein was capable of agglutinating both bloodstream-form and procyclic trypanosomes as well as rabbit red blood cells. This activity was strongly inhibited by D-glucosamine and weakly inhibited by N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Similarly, soybean trypsin inhibitor abrogated agglutination of …

The properties of a blood-meal-induced lectin (agglutinin) from the midgut of Glossina morsitans capable of agglutinating Trypanosoma brucei were studied in vitro. The midgut homogenate from flies that had been fed twice had the highest agglutination activity, followed by that from the once-fed flies and that from the unfed insects. As compared with the bloodstream-form trypanosomes, a much lower concentration of the midgut homogenate was required for agglutination of the procyclic parasites. Furthermore, the agglutination process was specifically inhibited by D-glucosamine. Soybean trypsin inhibitor abrogated agglutination of the bloodstreamform parasites, whereas the procyclics were unaffected. The agglutination process was temperature-sensitive, …

The diastereoselective synthesis of (1S*, 3R*, 5R*, 7S*) 2,8-dioxa 1-ethyl 3,5,7-trimethyl bicylo [3,2,1] octane 1d has been achieved using as key-step the regioselective Baeyer-Villiger reaction of 2,6-disubstituted cyclohexanone. It confirms the identification of a new male pheromone emitted by the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus. The trivial name sordidin is proposed. © 1995.

Asymptotic Stability In Functional Differential Equations By Liapunov Functionals, Bo Zhang

We consider the asymptotic stability in a system of functional differential equations x'(t) = F(t, xt) by Liapunov functionals V. The work generalizes some well-known results in the literature in that we only require the derivative of V to be negative definite on a sequence of intervals = [sn, tn]. We also show that it is not necessary to require a uniform upper bound on V for nonuniform asymptotic stability. © 1995 American Mathematical Society.

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1995.

The first standards for the evaluation of educational programs developed by the American Society of Landscape Architects contained a call for the evaluation of faculty effectiveness. In the intervening years, there have been efforts by the various educational programs to continue to find the most effective methods for measuring faculty competence. However, to-date there has been no collection or organization of these devices used either by students, by peers or by university administrators in this profession.
