Biosystematics Of The Cotesia Flavipes Species Complex (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): Morphometrics Of Selected Allopatric Populations, Susan W. Kimani-Njogu, William A. Overholt, James Woolley, Annette Walker

Morphometric studies of allopatric populations of the Cotesia fiavipes species complex representing three putative species; C. flavipes Cameron, C. sesamiae (Cameron) and C. chilonis (Matsumura), were conducted. Sixteen characters were measured. Principal component analysis separated the complex into three somewhat overlapping groups that corresponded well with previous concepts of the species. Canonical variate analysis separated the complex into three distinct clusters with populations from Africa together, populations from Asia and the Neotropics forming a second cluster, and material from China and Japan forming a third cluster. The Mahalanobis squared distances between the three clusters were nearly equal. Results support recognition …

Diurnal activity patterns and host preference of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead were studied in forest and linear habitats along Lake Victoria shore, Kenya. The objective was to identify the preferred hosts of G. f. fuscipes, the emanations of which may be attractive to this species. Hourly catches of flies in biconical traps were related to changes in the weather and the prevalence of hosts in the vicinity of traps. Flies were mainly active between 0800 and 1600 h, with males peaking around 1100 h and females around 1300 h. Activity of flies correlated directly with light intensity and temperature, but …

Long term changes in the size of populations of the tsetse Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti Were monitored over a 12 year period at Nguruman in south-western Kenya. Tsetse populations were subject to droughts of varying intensity and, from 1987, to trapping, initially by a research organization, and later by a community-based development project. Populations were mainly sampled using odour-baited biconical traps, with data from other monitoring traps corrected accordingly. Mark-release-recapture studies were carried out to relate trap catches to absolute population size, and to quantify movement between subpopulations. Foraging Behavior And Life History Of The Stemborer Parasitoid Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), R. P.J. Potting, W. A. Overholt, F. O. Danso, K. Takasu

The gregarious parasitoid Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) attacks larvae of pyralid and noctuid stemborers by entering the stemborer tunnel. The short-range foraging behavior of female C. flavipes was studied on stemborer-infested plants, in patches with host-related products and in artificial transparent tunnels. In addition, the longevity under specific conditions and the potential and realized fecundity of female C. flavipes were determined. Larval frass, caterpillar regurgitate, and holes in the stem are used in host location by C. flavipes. The response to host products by C. flavipes seems not to be host species specific. Local parasitoid populations may be adapted to their sympatric major plant host complex. Parasitoid strains may thus differ in their propensity to search for a particular micro-habitat or host or they may differ in their physiological compatibility with particular plant or host species. Cotesiaflavipes Cameron, a larval parasitoid used worldwide in biological control against tropical stemborers, has a wide host range in diverse habitats. The existence of plant and/or host specific strains in C. flavipes has been postulated. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected athletes exist at the collegiate level and are engaging in competitive sports, as was revealed by a 1993 NCAA survey. Unfortunately, there is a void when the issue of policy for the HIVpositive athlete and his or her participation rights at the collegiate level is addressed. Given the controversial nature of opinion on HIV and the resultant acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), it is recommended that a policy be in place for an HIV-infected athlete before it is needed. Ithaca College has recently developed such a policy, and it is offered here to other educational institutions as …

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the magnitude of the membrane resistance in the free area of a cell-attached patch-clamp recording and the change in total patch circuit resistance that would be produced by the introduction of a series resistance, such as would be observed upon acquiring a patch-clamped membrane vesicle. The results describe a method for determining the magnitude of the membrane resistance in the free area of a membrane patch, and demonstrate that: (a) at a given value of shunt resistance, areas of membrane with higher resistivity produce smaller proportional increases in total …

Recombinant human protein C (rhPC) secreted in the milk of transgenic pigs was studied. 'Ikansgenes having different regulatory elements of the murine milk protein, whey acidic protein, were used with cDNA and genomic human protein C (hPC) DNA sequences to obtain lower and higher expressing animals. The cDNA pigs had a range of expression of about 0.1-0.5 g/l milk. Two different genomic hPC pig lines have expressed 0.3 and 1-2 g/l, respectively. The rhPC was first purified at yields greater than 60 per cent using a monoclonal antibody (mAb) to the activation site on the heavy chain of hPC. Subsequent …

It has often been observed that students of English as a second language not only speak with a foreign accent but write with a distinctively foreign accent as well. Two apparently conflicting theories have been proposed to account for both success and failure in the acquisition of standard written English rhetorical patterns at the discourse level. On the one hand, Kaplan (1966) claims there is negative transfer of culturally based rhetorical norms from the first language into rhetorical practices in the second. On the other hand, Cummins (1980) points to positive transfer of cognitive/academic language proficiency. In other words, there …

The interconnections that exist among prosody, clause structure, and discourse pragmatics have been noted by many linguists (e.g., Halliday 1967; Givon 1983; Longacre 1983). These interconnections have included such phenomena as pausing after a paragraph or episode, and other interconnections have concerned characteristics of certain types of discourse such as narrative in which the use of intonation indicates topic and/or focus. Still others pertain to changes in clause structure which characterize certain sections of a discourse, such as peak, where clauses may display unusual word ordering, inflection, and unique intonation (Longacre 1983). Trends toward shared-memory programming paradigms, large (64-bit) address spaces, and memory-mapped files have led some to propose the use of a single virtual-address space, shared by all processes and processors. Typical proposals require the single address space to contain all process-private data, shared data, and stored files. To simplify management of an address space where stale pointers make it difficult to re-use addresses, some have claimed that a 64-bit address space is sufficiently large that there is no need to ever re-use addresses. Effect Of Subsurface Heterogeneity On Free-Product Recovery From Unconfined Aquifers, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Free-product record system designs for light-hydrocarbon-contaminated sites were investigated to evaluate the effects of subsurface heterogeneity using a vertically integrated three-phase flow model. The input stochastic variable of the areal flow analysis was the log-intrinsic permeability and it was generated using the Turning Band method. The results of a series of hypothetical field-scale simulations showed that subsurface heterogeneity has a substantial effect on free-product recovery predictions. As the heterogeneity increased, the recoverable oil volume decreased and the residual trapped oil volume increased. As the subsurface anisotropy increased, these effects together with free- and total-oil contaminated areas were further enhanced. The …

Between 1989-1991, I studied the effects of livestock grazing on vegetation and small mammals in semiarid shrub-grassland habitats of south-central Utah. Responses were measured at 2 spatial habitat scales; patches and macrohabitats. Patch-scale data were obtained from 4 small (<1 ha) livestock exclosures and nearby grazed areas. Macrohabitat-scale data were collected at 4 actively grazed sites and 4 comparable, excellent condition sites, ungrazed for 30+ years. Ungrazed patch and macrohabitat sites had more surface litter, greater perennial grass cover, and taller perennial grass plants, but treatment response varied among sites. Small mammal responses were apparent only at the macrohabitat scale, where ungrazed sites had 50% greater species richness and 80% higher abundance. Small mammal reproductive activity and biomass were not affected by rest from grazing at either scale. Small mammal community composition varied greatly among sites and within treatments. This variability has important implications for ecological monitoring efforts involving these species.

Extensive historical documentation of exposures and releases at government-owned energy facilities is a unique and valuable resource for analyzing and communicating health risks. Facilities at all stages of the atomic fuel cycle were the subject of numerous industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental assessments during the Cold War period. Uranium mines and mills on the Colorado Plateau were investigated as early as the 1940s. One such facility was the mill in Monticello, Utah, which began operation as a vanadium extraction plant in 1943 and was later adapted to recover uranium from camotite ores. The mill ceased operation in 1960. The …

Michael analyzes the intersections between feminist politics and postmodern aesthetics as demonstrated in recent Anglo-American fiction. While much has been written on various aspects of postmodernism and postmodern fiction and of feminism and feminist fiction, very little attention has been given to the postmodern aesthetic strategies that surface in post-World War II feminist fiction.
