Nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in recent efforts to devolve public responsibilities to lower levels of government and other sectors. The capacity of these organizations to serve as the public safety net, however, has come under question. This multiphase research project focused on the impact of welfare reform on community-based nonprofits in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The study includes surveys, focus groups, and a case study. Results to date strongly suggest that, in spite of their importance to the welfare reform effort, the capacity of smaller nonprofits to adopt the business-oriented approach required to meet the expectations of government contracts …

Recent studies on the chemical ecology of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, have unravelled a rich and complex system of pheromonal and other semiochemical-mediated communication in this insect. The key pheromones associated with such behavioural processes as social cohesion and communal egg-laying have been characterised. The semiochemical bases of such physiological processes as maturation of solitarious insects before the arrival of seasonal rains, development of gregarious traits in crowded solitarious insects, development of maturation synchrony in gregarious insects, and maternal transfer of gregarious characters to the offspring are better understood. Cotesia flavipes Cameron, a gregarious larval endoparasitoid native to the Indo-Australian region, was imported from Pakistan and released in Kenya in 1993 for management of the exotic stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). Recent reports confirmed the successful establishment of the parasitoid in three locations in Kenya and in northern Tanzania. Functional response studies on this parasitoid and an indigenous congener, Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron), indicated that C. flavipes had a higher searching ability and attacked more larvae when Chilo partellus was the host. Oviposition responses of gregarious adult gravid females of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria to sand previously used for oviposition by gregarious females (contaminated sand, with eggs and froth removed) and to sterilized sand (noncontaminated sand) were compared in bioassays. Gregarious females preferentially oviposited into contaminated sand. The number of egg pods laid by the females was found to correlate with the frequency of use of the contaminated sand for oviposition. Charcoal-trapped volatiles from the contaminated sand also elicited similar responses from gregarious females. Gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of the trapped volatiles revealed the presence of three electrophysiologically active compounds …

The intensity of diapause of field-collected diapausing larvae of Cliilo partcllus (Swinhoe) and Cliilo oriclmlcocilielltis Strand (Lepidoptera: Pyrnlidae) was compared in the laboratory at 28 ± 0.5°C under a photopcriod of 12:12 (L:D)h. Chilo partcllus terminated diapause faster than C. oriclmlcociliellus. Mean time to diapause termination was 9.7 days for C. parlellus and 14.4 days for C. oriclinlcociliellns. Male and female C. parlellns larvae terminated diapause and adults emerged at the same time, while significant differences were found in diapause termination and in emergence times between male and female C. orichnlcocilk'llits. © 1999 ICIPE.

Visual assessments are usually carried out on crop experimental plots with different treatments in order to determine the level of some factor, such as disease or pest infestation and damage, which are scored for incidence or severity using a pre-determined range of scores. Real data collected in the form of scores on experimental fields are usually non-precise. This non-precision may be due to the scorer's inconsistency and judgmental error. It may also be due to the apparent interdependency of the scores, since a scorer will naturally compare the score of previous plots in order to determine the score of the …

Studies were conducted to characterize larval habitats of anopheline mosquitoes and to analyze spatial heterogeneity of mosquito species in the Suba District of western Kenya. A total of 128 aquatic habitats containing mosquito larvae were sampled, and 2,209 anopheline and 10,538 culicine larvae were collected. The habitats were characterized based on size, pH, distance to the nearest house and to the shore of Lake Victoria, coverage of canopy, surface debris, algae and emergent plants, turbidity, substrate, and habitat types. Microscopic identification of third and fourth-instar anopheline larvae did not yield any Anopheles funestus or other anophelines. A total of 829 …

The responses of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead and other Diptera to carbon dioxide were studied in linear and dense forests along the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya. Flies were caught in biconical traps and were intercepted with electric nets while in flight near traps. Carbon dioxide dispensed at a high rate (51 min-1) in linear forest failed to increase the numbers of tsetse attracted to or caught in traps. In contrast, catches of non-biting Muscidae, Stomoxyinae and Tabanidae were improved by up to 11 times. Inside dense forest, carbon dioxide released at half this rate increased both the numbers of …

The cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is a morphologically and genetically variable species composed of wild perennial, wild annual, and cultivated forms that are mainly used for edible seeds and pods. In this study, genetic variation in 199 germplasm accessions of wild and cultivated cowpea was evaluated using an allozyme analysis. The results from this survey showed that wild cowpea exhibits genetic variation perfectly fitted with the existing morphological classification. The cowpea gene-pool is characterized by its unusually large size. Gregarious nymphs of Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria migratorioides are often seen to march together in common bands in the field. In the present study, the intraspecific aggregation responses of nymphal and older stages of the two insects were compared with their interspecific responses. Unlike S. gregaria, L. m. migratorioides shows a lesser pattern of stage and sex differentiation in its aggregation pheromone biology. Thus, although fifth-instar nymphs did not respond significantly to the adult pheromone, adults responded significantly to the nymph pheromone. An electrophoretic comparison of variation at 28 isozyme loci was performed for 58 Vigna accessions belonging to the V. luteola, V. ambacensis, and V. racemosa groups of species. In all three groups, strong divergence is noted between results and actual nomenclature.

Soil applications of powdered neem seed or neem cake at 100 g/plant at planting and, subsequently, at 3-month intervals, reduced the populations of Pratylenchus goodeyi Sher and Allen and Meloidogyne spp. on par with Furadan 5G (carbofuran) applied at 40 g/plant at planting and then at 6-month intervals to banana plants grown in 100-l containers with controlled levels of banana nematode infestations. Eight months after planting, banana plants treated with powdered neem cake, seed or kernel or with neem oil had 4 to 95 times fewer parasitic nematodes than the untreated control.
