Development Of Odour-Baited Traps For Glossina Swynnertoni (Diptera: Glossinidae), P. N. Ndegwa, S. Mihok

Three new prototype traps, (S1-S3), were developed during studies of the behavioural ecology of Glossina swynnertoni Austen in Kenya and Tanzania. The traps were compared in latin square experiments relative to the regular biconical trap as a standard and a selection of other conventional tsetse traps. Observations were also made on fly behaviour in the vicinity of traps using electric nets and sticky materials. When baited with acetone and 1-octen-3-ol, the S1 trap was 3.5 times as effective in catching G. swynnertoni in Kenya as the biconical trap. As a result, the existing parameters used to define regional elements are not always useful to landscape architects, particularly in rapidly developing areas in which there are few, easily recognizable, regional components to the landscape. The growing interest in computer use at home and in the workplace has led to the incorporation of computer skills into school curricula. Numerous claims assert the benefit of computers, but questions remain concerning the nature of that benefit. The increasingly widespread use of telecommunications raises further questions regarding the effect of computer-mediated communication on language development. Unfortunately, few rigorous studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the actual effect of e-mail on children's writing skills. Numerous techniques were used to analyze recharge rates, timing, and mechanisms for a perched, phreatic aquifer. Recharge rates were estimated using fluid mass balance (FMB), integrated hydrograph separation (IHS), and innovative hydrograph manipulation techniques. Timing and mechanisms of recharge were analyzed using signal-processing and linear-system approaches. Hydrometeorologic and hydrologic data were collected for a 16-month period (4/97 to 8/98) using both manual and automated techniques. Precipitation totaled 135.6 cm and evapotranspiration (ET) calculated using the Penman-Monteith method totaled 107.5 cm. Recharge estimates from FMB ranged from 20.3% to 33.6%. Recent government gaseous exhaust emissions regulations have been expanded to include a variety of mobile air pollution sources. Exhaust emissions from non-road engines have recently become a focus of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. The term "non-road engines" covers many industrial and general aviation (GA) type engines that are currently unregulated. This study examines the gaseous exhaust gas emissions produced from a mechanically-controlled Lycoming IO-360-B GA engine and studies the benefits of conversion to electronic fuel injection with closed loop feedback control. The study concludes that the overall gaseous exhaust emissions from the unmodified engine far exceed current automotive standards. …

With the proliferation of client-server systems there is a need for new approaches to determine their reliability in the uncertain environment of the internet. The proposed methods analyze client-server reliability by accounting for uncertainties in the operational environment of the internet. The uncertainties are addressed with a fuzzy paradigm applied in a tractable, verifiable reliability model of client-server systems. For computer hardware, fuzzy sets were used to address vague reliability data using bi-state fuzzy probabilistic theories. The main result of this work describes a completely novel structural result for (v, 3, lambda)-designs in the case when lambda is even. Such designs are known as triple systems. Given a finite collection of n elements, a triple system of order n and index lambda is a collection of subsets of size three chosen from the given set with the property that each distinct pair of elements from the set occurs in exactly lambda of the triples. Exposures of the Pittsburgh coal bed, its seatearth, and correlative rocks at six sites along a 79 mile-long traverse from Morgantown, West Virginia south to near Burnsville, West Virginia comprise a paleocatena of organic and mineral paleosols formed on a coeval landscape. Northern sites were poorly drained leading to weakly developed Inceptisol profiles in the seatearth followed by thick accumulations of organic matter. More highly evolved profiles developed at the better drained sites to the south contain: highly leached, kaolinitic A horizons; slickensided horizons; subsurface accumulation of iron oxide; strong soil structure; in-situ clay production and translocation; and redoximorphic concentrations …

The objective of this research was the investigation of the durability of composite materials employed for rehabilitation of concrete bridge piers. Standard concrete cylinders (4&inches; x 8&inches; in dimensions) wrapped with 1 layer of glass fabric embedded in an epoxy resin matrix were used to simulate the field situation. Wet lay-up method was used to wrap the concrete cylinders where the epoxy also served the purpose of bonding the composite to the concrete. Fractal analysis was conducted on topographic relief and seismic reflection travel time data in the state of West Virginia to determine the potential influence of subsurface structure on surface topography. Seismic travel-times digitized from two east-west seismic profiles and topographic relief extracted in north-south and west-east directions from a 1:250,000 Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for the entire state were used in the analysis. A limited local study was also conducted of hand-drawn topographic profiles extracted from U.S.G.S. 1:24,000 topographic quadrangles over the Cottageville gas field in western West Virginia. Using cloned kDNA sequences from the reference strain of Leishmania tropica IC-067, we have screened leishmanial isolates from Laikipia District of Kenya and identified these isolates as L. tropica. One isolate, IC-331, from a rat (Rattus rattus) was typed as L. tropica. This is the first time that L. tropica has been isolated from a wild rodent in Kenya and thus the first indication that the disease caused by L. tropica might be a zoonosis. The leishmanial isolates, especially those of sandflies, display extensive heterogeneity, prompting a need for selecting local and/or regional reference strains to generate species-specific DNA probes …

We have measured redshifts and Kron-Cousins R-band magnitudes for a sample of galaxies in the poor cluster AWM 7. We have measured redshifts for 172 galaxies; 106 of these are cluster members. We determine the luminosity function (LF) from a photometric survey of the central 1.2 × 1.2 h-1 Mpc. The LF has a bump at the bright end and a faint-end slope of α = -1.37 ± 0.16, populated almost exclusively by absorption-line galaxies. The cluster velocity dispersion is lower in the core (~530 km s-1) than at the outskirts (~680 km s-1), …

Field experiments were conducted at Mbita, western Kenya for two seasons to evaluate the potential of the entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsh.) Sorokin, for biological control of the legume flower thrips, Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom), on cowpea. An ultra-low-volume (ULV) oil/aqueous formulation and a high-volume (HV) aqueous formulation of conidia were applied three times each at two concentrations of 1 x 1011 and 1 x 1013 conidia ha-1. Compared with the untreated controls, both formulations significantly reduced thrips populations and plant damage in both seasons. Adult insects collected from fungal-treated plots and reared in the laboratory showed a high mortality due …

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensisδ-endotoxin genes were inserted into transposon Tn917in plasmid pTV51Ts and cloned into the chromosome ofBacillus sphaericus2362. Many of the transformants reacted with antibody to the 135-, 128-, 65-, and 28-kDaB.t.israelensistoxin proteins and were approximately 10 times more toxic toA. aegyptilarvae than the untransformed host. Some of the transformants differed physiologically and morphologically from the wild-typeB. sphaericus.The toxicity of the transformed phenotype was maintained through many transfers in the absence of selective pressure. © 1998 Academic Press.

The American Law Institute's adoption of the Restatement (Third) of Property: Mortgages may have significant impact on the negotiation and drafting of mortgages. Rather than merely reciting the prevailing case law, the Restatement proposes approaches the American Law Institute believes are desirable as a matter of sound policy. This Article highlights key areas in which the new Restatement may affect mortgage drafting and suggests useful techniques for mortgage drafters.

We investigated the energy balance of vegetative and nonvegetative surfaces and gas exchange for 3 shrub species growing over each surface. During a 1-week period, incoming short-wave radiation, surface and soil temperature, and soil heat flux for turf and pine-bark mulch surfaces were gathered. Air temperature and relative humidity at 2 heights over each surface were also measured. Mulch surface and air temperatures were warmer and soil temperature below mulch was cooler than turf throughout each day. Relative humidity varied with height above turf, but each height was comparable over mulch. For the majority of each day, soil heat flux …

Being connected for most Africans means something completely different from most of us in more (technologically) "developed" countries. Compared to those who have virtually unlimited and relatively cheap access to e-mail and the World Wide Web (WWW), most Africans have limited access to e-mail only. Outside of South Africa, which hosts 70 full Internet Service Providers (ISPs); Egypt, which hosts 25; and Morocco, which hosts 15, most African countries have well under 10 ISPs, the average being loser to 1 or 2 (Jensen, 1998). This paper examines whether the Ontario government’s creation of District Social Services Administration Boards (DSSABs) has accomplished the stated objectives of simplifying access to services and better servicing clients, as well as improving cost-effectiveness, coordination, innovation, the sharing of resources, and achieving economies of scale. A case study of Manitoulin-Sudbury reveals that the DSSAB for the two combined districts has been unsatisfactory and none of the stated objectives of the policy have been achieved.

A published temperature-dependent phenology model constructed for representing buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) development has been calibrated. The model considers the phenophases of sowing to emergence, of emergence to first anthesis, and of first anthesis to physiological maturity. It is used for the strategic planning of buckwheat production in Alpine areas and predicts the latest possible sowing dates in areas of the Swiss cantons of the Grisons and of the Ticino as well as of the Italian province of Sondrio. It tries to cover most of the critical decisions and the trade-offs that one course of action will have on subsequent options. It draws on my as experiences as the author of two electronic publications: The American Revolution, a multimedia CD-ROM published by Research Publications in the American Journey: History in Your Hands series, and Essential Documents of American History, a text only title published by EBSCO Electronic Publishing.
