Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prophylactic CNS chemotherapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia is associated with declines in neuropsychological abilities. METHODS: Growth curve analysis was used to examine neuropsychological outcome and treatment-related change in children (N = 30) who were treated at two childhood cancer centers. A comprehensive test battery was administered at baseline (8 months), 2, 3, and 4 years postdiagnosis (age at diagnosis M = 5.90 years, SD = 4.2C). RESULTS: Results indicated modest declines in arithmetic, visual motor integration, and verbal fluency. Intrathecal and systemic treatment was related to poorer visual motor integration at 4 years postdiagnosis and …

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos. In this study, 4 researchers conduct phenomenological interviews to find out how adults describe their learning experiences and what meanings they attach to those descriptions. The study proposes common structural and functional features of adults' learning experiences, while noting important substantive differences between and among the participants interviewed. The study also raises questions concerning the differences between experiences in general and learning experiences in particular; between learning and performance; and it questions the meaning and validity of the construct, group learning. It also draws several implications regarding the teaching of adults. Lastly, it proposes a way to reconcile he apparent …

A survey was conducted in the food crop production area of western Kenya to characterise the nematode communities in different cropping systems and to monitor the effect of improved fallows on the abundance, diversity and community structure of plant-parasitic nematode assemblages. Soil samples were taken from short-term natural fallows (<3 years), old natural fallows (>20 years), maize/beans cultivated fields and improved fallows with Crotalaria grahamiana, Sesbania sesban and Tephrosia vogelii. The Shannon diversity index and evenness were used to assess nematode diversity in the different cropping systems. The log-logistic probability distribution function was employed to model trappability of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes, with respect to distance from the edge of two types of habitat. The parameters of the model were obtained using the nonlinear maximum likelihood approach. Asymptotic standard errors of the maximum likelihood estimates were computed for the parameters, and the X2 goodness-of-fit test used to assess the predicted trap catches. Simulation technique was used to estimate the radius of attraction of the unbaited biconical trap for the fly, taking the efficiency of the trap into consideration. Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious pest of the tropical legume sesbania (Sesbania sesban (L.) Merrill) widely used for soil fertility improvement in southern Africa. Surveys were conducted between October 1997 and June 1999 in order to identify the predators of M. ochroptera in sesbania fallows in eastern Zambia. The Heteroptera Afrius yolofa (Guérin-Méneville), Glypsus conspicuus (Westwood), Macrorhaphis acuta Dallas, Mecosoma mensor (Germar), Rhinocoris segmentarius (Germar), and Deraeocoris ostentans (Stål), the carabid beetle Cyaneodinodes fasciger (Chaudoir), the ants Tetramorium sericeiventre Emery and Pheidole sp., and the lacewing Mallada sp. were recorded as predators of M. ochroptera for the …

We examined aggregative behavior of hatchlings of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria emerging from solitaria egg pods that had been incubated in sand previously used for consecutive ovipositions by gregarious females. Hatchlings derived from such eggs were significantly more gregarious than those derived from pods laid in clean sand. The gregarizing effect of the sand-associated factor originating from 3, 5, or 10 ovipositions by gregarious females increased in a dose-dependent fashion. Washing the sand with organic solvents following such ovipositions, or flushing it with nitrogen gas, led to substantial loss of its gregarizing effect, showing that the active signal is …

Adult Dystrophic (Mdx) Endplates Exhibit Reduced Quantal Size And Enhanced Quantal Variation, C. George Carlson, Diana M. Roshek

Examination of miniature endplate potential (MEPP) distributions indicated that the average quantal size is significantly reduced by approximately 44% in young adult mdx mice (5-7 weeks). The average quantum declined further to approximately 37% of non-dystrophic levels in mature (6- to 24-month) mdx mice. Young adult non-dystrophic and mdx endplates and mature non-dystrophic endplates exhibited a linear relationship between the mean and variance of uniquantal MEPP amplitude distributions. Mature mdx endplates, however, exhibited a distinctly nonlinear relationship characterized by large increases in variance at larger mean MEPP amplitudes. These results indicate a reduced average density of functional acetylcholine (ACh) receptors …
