Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies. I. The Enearc Cluster Sample*, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, L. N. Da Costa, C. N. A. Willmer, A. Wegner

This paper presents data on the ENEARc subsample of the larger ENEAR survey of nearby early-type galaxies. The ENEARc galaxies belong to clusters and were specifically chosen to be used for the construction of a D-n-sigma template. The ENEARc sample includes new measurements of spectroscopic and photometric parameters (redshift, velocity dispersion, line index Mg-2, and the angular diameter d(n)), as well as data from the literature. New spectroscopic data are given for 229 cluster early-type galaxies in 28 clusters. A locally available anthocorid predator, Orius albidipennis Reuter, was evaluated as a candidate biocontrol agent for Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom, a major pest of French beans, Phaseolus vulgaris (L), in Kenya. The functional response of adult O. albidipennis to larval and adult M. sjostedti was studied at 15, 25, and 28°C and densities of 5, 10, 20, and 30 larval and adult M. sjostedti per cage, over 24 h. More larvae and adult M. sjostedti were killed at the higher densities and with an increase in temperature. The data provided good fit to both type I and II functional response models. …

A previous study on the feeding responses of tsetse flies, Glossina morsitans morsitans, implicated the existence of allomonal barriers, both volatile and nonvolatile, on the nonpreferred host, waterbuck, Kobus defassa. In the present study, electroantennogram-active compounds in odors from waterbuck were compared with those of two preferred hosts of tsetse flies, buffalo, Syncerus caffer, and ox, Bos indicus. Odors from the three bovids were trapped on activated charcoal and/or reverse-phase (octadecyl bonded) silica and analyzed with a gas chromatography- linked electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) and, where possible, identified by using gas chromatography-linked mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and chromatographic comparisons with authentic samples. …

Evidence For A Compound In Comstock-Kellog Glands Modulating Premating Behavior In Male Desert Locust, Schistocerca Gregaria, Peter G.N. Njagi, B. Torto

The Comstock-Kellog glands in adult females of certain acridid species, including the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria have been implicated as a source of volatiles that play a role in mating behavior. A dichloromethane extract of the glands was analyzed for metabolites by gas chromatography, coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection, and mass spectrometry. Coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) analysis revealed a component that elicited an electroantennogram response from the antenna of adult male S. gregaria. The compound was identified by GC-MS as pentanoic acid. The levels of the compound in the gland extract varied with age of female locust; it was present …

This dissertation is a study of the consonant reduplication process in Amharic, a process which is herein named “Bi-Consonantal Reduplication.” In this process, the last two consonants of a root are repeated, a process that has never been studied in a systematic way in Amharic or any other Semitic language. Previous authors have used a variety of labels for this process, too often writing their definitions in ways that include other types of reduplication or that exclude some genuine examples of this reduplication pattern. This thesis presents "democratic" art. As defined by the author, democratic art is work that does not bear the idiosyncratic mark of the artist's hand. It is hoped that such work remains more fully open to the viewer's imaginative involvement than work that bears a more overt trace of authorship. As an invitation to such involvement, and in addition to removing the mark of the hand, the artist also creates interactive pieces, such as large-scale slide puzzles, which can be manipulated by the viewer. Expansion Of The Scope Of The Allenic Pauson-Khand Reaction To Include Carboxylic Acids And Esters, Kimberly D. Fisher

1,3,3 Trisubstituted allenes were prepared by performing an SN2' reaction of lactones. Opening of the lactone created carboxylic acids that could then be converted to esters. By varing the functionality on the lactone and the Grignard reagents, a variety of allenes could be prepared to test the viability of the Pauson-Khand reaction in the presence of these functional groups. The positioning of the groups also lead to variations in the system. These reactions produced three different types of adducts. They include alpha-methylene cyclopentenones, 4-alkylidene cyclopentenones, and cross conjugated trienes.*.;*Please refer to dissertation for diagrams.

This study explored the degree to which deception is perceived to be a socially acceptable form of communication. It was suspected that a liar's motivation for deceiving, a perceiver's cultural background, and the type of relationship between a liar and the target of a lie (e.g., spouse, friend, stranger, etc.) would affect the perceived acceptability of deceptive messages. Students from China and the United States rated the degree to which they perceived deceptive acts depicted in written scenarios as acceptable or unacceptable. Results indicated that 1) lies told for malicious or self‐benefiting purposes were perceived as less acceptable than mutually‐benefiting …

X-ray diffraction technique is one of the best methods to study polymorphism of fats systems. The only information authors usually report is the interplanar distances calculated from the angles at which diffraction lines appear; these clearly determine the polymorphic form. However, in many other fields using crystallography, X-ray patterns are also used to determine crystal size from the broadening of the diffraction line at half the line of maximum intensity. To investigate the meaning of the diffraction line width in fat systems and the relationship with other techniques widely used to determine crystal size, we crystallized a blend of 30–70% …

The insect midgut is the primary site for food digestion, as well as for vector-borne pathogen infection into the invertebrate host. Accordingly, antigens of this critical insect organ are targets for anti-vector vaccines, insecticidal toxins, and transmission-blocking vaccines. We used midgut proteins of the African malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae to select single-chain human antibody fragments (scFv) from a high-diversity, phage-displayed library. Using a phage-display selection method on western-blotted antigens, we selected an unusual truncated scFv clone, consisting of a heavy-chain only, which binds to An. gambiae midgut tissue. Just in time, quality management, and supply chain management have in recent years been proposed as means of improving product quality and responsiveness, while simultaneously reducing cost. The three can also be used as complementary elements of an integrated strategy aimed at improving an organization's competitiveness. This study proposes and tests a structural equation model that examines linkages between just in time, quality management, supply chain management and supplier management, and their impact on business performance. Results show that while just in time, quality and supply chain management efforts are indeed mutually supportive, it is a firm's efforts in the …

Property rights are fundamentals to economic analysis. There is, however, no consensus in the economic literature about what property rights are. Economists define them variously and inconsistently, sometimes in ways that deviate from the conventional understandings of legal scholars and judges. This article explores ways in which definitions of property rights in the economic literature diverge from conventional legal understandings, and how those divergences can create interdisciplinary confusion and bias economic analyses. Indeed, some economists' idiosyncratic definitions of property rights, if used to guide policy, could lead to suboptimal economic outcomes.
