In this thesis, I will discuss most of the aspects of salt firing. I will give a quick overview of the history of salt glazing and talk about some of the clay and glazes that I have adapted and work well for me in the salt kiln. I have also, developed an injection system to better introduce sodium compounds into the kiln. My goal was to find a method of introducing these materials into the kiln more efficiently and effectively. My system proves to be more effective in getting the best result, while using less of the material. By using …

The He I 706.52 Nm Line Shape Characteristics In The Plasma Diagnostics, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Stevan Djenize

On the basis of the precisely recorded 706.52 nm He I line shape we have obtained the basic plasma parameters i.e. electron temperature (T) and electron density (N) using our new line deconvolution procedure in the case of five various plasmas created in a linear, low–pressure, pulsed arc discharge. Plasma parameters have been also measured using independent experimental diagnostical techniques. Excellent agreement was found among the two sets of the obtained parameters. Chandra Observations Of The Luminous, Oxygen‐Rich Supernova Remnants In The Irregular Galaxy Ngc 4449, Daniel J. Patnaude, Robert A. Fesen

An analysis of a 29 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the young, Cassiopeia A–like supernova remnant in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449 is presented. The observed 0.5–2.1 keV spectrum reveals the likely presence of several emission lines. A nonequilibrium ionization fit to the spectrum suggests an overabundance of oxygen around 20 times solar, consistent with the remnant’s UV and optical emission-line properties. We discuss the remnant’s approximate X-ray–derived elemental abundances and compare its X-ray spectrum and luminosity with other oxygen-rich remnants

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined whether messages using or not using emotionally intense language combined with certain colors, i.e., red, white, or blue, to effect attitude change. Emotionally intense messages were more positively associated with attitude change than were those with low emotional intensity, but no interaction effects or main effects for color were found.

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Cereal Stemborers, And Its Host Range Expansion In Ethiopia, E. Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu, C. O. Omwega

Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

Olfactory responses of the cereal stemborer parasitoid Cotesia sesamiae to volatiles emitted by gramineous host and nonhost plants of the stemborers were studied in a Y-tube olfactometer. The host plants were maize (Zea mays) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), while the nonhost plant was molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora). In single-choice tests, females of C. sesamiae chose volatiles from infested and uninfested host plants and molasses grass over volatiles from the control (soil). In dual-choice tests, the wasp preferred volatiles from infested host plants to those from uninfested host plants. Subspecies chrysippus, dorippus and alcippus of the butterfly Danaus chrysippus differ at three biallelic colour gene loci. They have partially vicariant distributions, but their ranges overlap over a substantial part of central and East Africa, where hybridism is commonplace. We now report that the West African subspecies alcippus differs from other subspecies, not only in nuclear genotype but also in mitochondrial haplotype in both allopatry and sympatry. The maintenance of concordant nuclear and cytoplasmic genetic differences in sympatry, and in the face of hybridisation, is prima facie evidence for sexual isolation. The Psychometric Characteristics Of The Hamilton Depression Inventory., David J A Dozois

In this study, the psychometric properties of the Hamilton Depression Inventory (HDI; Reynolds & Kobak, 1995a) were examined in a sample of 249 undergraduate participants. The HDI exhibited high internal consistency and support for its construct validity was demonstrated by the HDI's patterns of correlations with other measures of depression, anxiety, and depression-relevant cognition. Factor analyses of the full (23-item) and 17-item versions of the HDI each yielded 4 factors, which accounted for 49% and 53% of the variance in participants' responses, respectively. The possibility to cross-species amplify microsatellites in fruit flies of the genus Ceratitis was tested with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by analysing 23 Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) microsatellite markers on the genomic DNA of three other economically important, congeneric species: C. rosa (Karsch), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. cosyra (Walker). Twenty-two primer pairs produced amplification products in at least one of the three species tested. The majority of the products were similar, if not identical in size to those expected in C. capitata. A high diversity library of recombinant human antibodies was selected on complex antigen mixtures from midguts of female Anopheles gambiae Giles. The library of phage-displayed single chain variable region fragment constructs, derived from β-lymphocyte mRNA of naïve human donors, was repeatedly selected and reamplified on the insoluble fraction of midgut homogenates. Five rounds of panning yielded only one midgut-specific clone, which predominated the resulting antibody panel. In A. gambiae, the epitope was found throughout the tissues of females but was absent from the midgut of males. Objectives. The purpose of this descriptive investigation was to determine the perceived knowledge of and attitudes toward natural products by pharmacists in Missouri. Methods. A questionnaire was mailed to 2921 licensed pharmacists. Assessments were conducted regarding the venues and specific resources these pharmacists utilized in order to gain knowledge in the area of natural products. Results. Over half (56.9%) of those surveyed indicated that they received natural product questions on a weekly basis, but only a minority (2.4%) felt they could “always answer natural product questions.” The most commonly used means for education was printed continuing education (70.2%). Objective. The purpose of this study was to describe pharmacy school curriculum offerings in the areas of natural products and complementary/alternative medicine. Methods. Eighty-one schools of pharmacy in the United States were surveyed to determine the extent to which coursework addressing natural product or complementary/alternative medicine had been incorporated into their curriculum. Results. Usable responses were obtained from 64 schools (79 percent). Of these, 51 schools offered some exposure to these topics, while 40 offered courses exclusively on these topics. Most of these schools offered this instruction as an elective course focused primarily on natural products. Conclusion. These results indicate …
