Decision analysis in subsurface contamination management is generally carried out through a traditional engineering economic viewpoint. However, new advances in human health risk assessment, namely, the probabilistic risk assessment, and the growing awareness of the importance of soft data in the decision-making process, require decision analysis methodologies that are capable of accommodating non-technical and politically biased qualitative information. In this work, we discuss the major limitations of the currently practiced decision analysis framework, which evolves around the definition of risk and cost of risk, and its poor ability to communicate risk-related information. The paper examines prospects and constraints in the production and export market of mango, particularly the Boribo Muyuni, a popular mango variety in Zanzibar. It identifies the steps undertaken by government and private sector in stimulating production and marketing. The main constraints include suitability of only a few varieties for export, seasonal variability in output; pests and disease problems particularly the Mango fruitfly, Ceratitis cosyra, high freight charges, limited cargo space and lack of technical know-how on scientific management practices. Using her own diary as a case study, the author examines how the life writing of a military child inscribes ordinary trauma, defining ordinary trauma as a response to extraordinary events masked as ordinary. For the military child, the possibility of war is made ordinary and rendered such in her writing.

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon

Activation free energies of nucleation (ΔG c ) were calculated using induction times of crystallization measurements. Results showed that ΔG c decreased exponentially as wax concentration increased at a constant crystallization temperature (T c ). In contrast, for a constant supersaturation, ΔG c increased from 12 to 22°C but decreased between 22 and 35°C. Melting behavior of purified waxes and solutions of purified waxes in sunflower oil were studied by DSC after crystallization at fast and slow cooling rates (20 and 1°C/min, respectively). Low supercooling temperatures (T c >65°C) showed an increase in the onset temperature (T 0 ) as …

The infectivity of 4 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae to puparia of Ceratitis capitata treated as late third-instar larvae in unsterilized soil was investigated in the laboratory under controlled temperature and moisture. At 20-30°C, mortality in puparia was highest at water potential of -0.1 and -0.01 mega Pascal (MPa) and lowest at water potential of -0.0055 and -0.0035 MPa in all the isolates. In wetter soil however, isolates ICIPE 20 and 60 caused significantly higher mortality than ICIPE 18 and 69. The survival of conidia in drier soil (-0.1 MPa) was not adversely affected at all temperatures. However, in wet soil …

Under the umbrella of the International Organisation of Biological Control (IOBC), an international working group of public sector scientists entitled on "Transgenic Organisms in Integrated Pest Management and Biological Control" has been organized. The group will develop scientific principles and detailed scientific guidelines for biosafety testing of transgenic crops. The rotation of leguminous shrubs and crops is being tested on farms and recommended as a means of improving soil fertility and increasing crop yield in eastern and southern Africa, including western Kenya. However, this improved fallow practice may also increase the nematode population in the soil. An experiment was conducted to monitor the effects of plant-parasitic nematodes on crops after improved fallow. Syntacticians generally focus on prose texts of a language when studying word order rather than examining poetry. The general consensus is that the stylization of poetry exercises too great an influence on the text to allow for regular word order. In their study of pragmatics, particularly in obsolete languages, Herring (2000) and Hock (2000) demonstrate that even in poetry syntactic patterns can be seen in different genres or text types. Herring's contention in Old Tamil poetry is that the more poetic the genre, the more word order variation can be expected. By the same token, the more informational the genre, …

In this commentary, we offer a perspective on the problem of authors reporting and interpreting effect sizes in the absence of formal statistical tests of their chanceness. The perspective reinforces our previous distinction between single -study investigations and multiple-study syntheses.

Nominalized sentential elements have long been observed in Tibeto-Burman languages, but the role and extent of nominalized patterns have not been explored as a base of formative structuring. This dissertation examines nominalization patterns in Burmese from the word to text level and posits a complex information packaging role of postposition particles in erecting a structure of predictable and iteratively patterned nominals which function to reduce information overload and facilitate online parsing. Perhaps the most noteworthy product of Korean civilization, han'guil is a source of pride among Koreans: not only does it embody a sense of national uniqueness, but it is also a valuable tool against illiteracy. While this great cultural achievement has merited considerable attention in Korea, detailed English-language accounts of han'guil are scarce. Most prominent among this small body of work is Gari Ledyard's 1966 dissertation, "The Korean Language Reform of 1446," since republished (with modest revisions) in 1998. We present R -band CCD photometry for 1332 early-type galaxies, observed as part of the ENEAR survey of peculiar motions using early-type galaxies in the nearby universe. Circular apertures are used to trace the surface brightness profiles, which are then fitted by a two-component bulge-disk model. From the fits, we obtain the structural parameters required to estimate galaxy distances using the Dn - and fundamental plane relations. We find that about 12% of the galaxies are well represented by a pure r1/4 law, while 87% are best fitted by a two-component model. There are 356 repeated observations of 257 galaxies …

Numerical and theoretical studies of the excitability boundaries for spiral waves in 2D and scroll waves in 3D are presented. The boundaries are defined by unstable wave segments, which are stabilized by using a negative feedback control algorithm. A kinematic description of the constant-size, constant-shape wave segments is presented for 2D waves. Intricate patterns of wave propagation are exhibited in a chemical reaction-diffusion system with spatiotemporal feedback. Wave behavior is controlled by feedback-regulated excitability gradients that guide propagation in specified directions. Waves reflecting or refracting are observed when interacting with a discontinuity in excitability. Wave trajectories in fixed excitability gradients …
