Relative to most parts of North America, the Great Plains region, which is bordered by the Rocky Mountain Front on the west and the Mississippi River on the east, has been understudied in terms of the structure, formation, and evolution of the underlying crust, mantle, and core. The anticipated arrival of the USArray portable seismic stations, which will cover the entire United States regardless of surface geology and tectonic activities, and the deployment of the accompanying flexible array stations and the permanent seismic stations in this area, will fill this gap and address numerous problems related to the structure and …

This thesis investigates some of the syntactic differences between two forms of Arabic, the standard and the local vernacular of Petra. This vernacular has not been looked at from a syntactic perspective. The attempt here is to bring attention to some of the features characterizing this vernacular by comparing it with Standard Arabic. It attempts also to find reasons for having two forms of the language in one society as well as people's reaction towards that. Interlocked Open And Closed Linkages With Few Joints, Erik D. Demaine, Stefan Langerman, Joseph O'Rourke, Jack Snoeyink

We study collections of linkages in 3-space that are interlocked in the sense that the linkages cannot be separated without one bar crossing through another. We explore pairs of linkages, one open chain and one closed chain, each with a small number of joints, and determine which can be interlocked. In particular, we show that a triangle and an open 4-chain can interlock, a quadrilateral and an open 3-chain can interlock, but a triangle and an open 3-chain cannot interlock.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of control expectancies on fraternity and sorority member's perceptions of their group. Based on a review of the literature pertinent to this investigation nine hypotheses were forwarded. Generally speaking, the hypotheses suggest that fraternity and sorority members perceptions will differ based on their control expectancies. One hundred ninety-five fraternity and sorority members completed a questionnaire that included the Three Factor Locus of Control Scale (Levenson, 1973), the Perceived Homophily Measure (McCroskey et al., 1975), the Quality of Relationship Inventory (Pierce et al., 1991), dimensions of the Group Behavior Inventory (Friedlander, …

Seismic Interpretation And Structural Evaluation Of The Hope Basin, Alaska, Virginia L. Elswick

The Hope Basin is a Cenozoic basin located off the coast of Alaska, in the Bering Sea. Its initial formation was theorized to have occurred from right-lateral movement on the Kobuk fault, a strike-slip fault located in northwestern Alaska. However, from an interpretation of newly reprocessed seismic lines that are located in the southeastern portion of the basin, it is evident that distinct characteristics of strike-slip basins, as evaluated by past authors, are not present within the study area.
