Mode Choice Models For Long Distance Travel In Usa, Isaradatta Rasmidatta
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The influences of technology and economic development on human activity are increasingly taking place on larger spatial scales. As a consequence, complementary interactions between urban regions are getting stronger, which causes urban regions to change. In order to stimulate the integration between regions and states level, policy makers need increased knowledge of the factors that influence long distance travel. From an environmental perspective, long distance trips can be very important because most of the trips are made in personal vehicles or airplanes that affect emissions and fuel consumption. Mode choice alternatives for long distance travel include: personal vehicle, air, and …

Determinants Of Adverse Usage Of Information Systems Assets: A Study Of Antecedents Of Is Exploit In Organizations, Aakash Taneja
Business Administration Dissertations - Archive
Information systems assets are vital to the functioning and survival of organizations. Therefore, organizations expend many resources in protecting these assets. Organizations spent resources on technologies, policies, procedures, guidelines, user awareness, education, training and other protection mechanisms. Advancing technology and complexity of organizations make the protection of these assets a continuing challenge. Studies show that in spite of these efforts, the main reason for security failures in organizations is due to human behavior (Stanton et al. 2004). This study speaks for an enhanced behavioral model for the adverse usage of IS assets and addresses the factors that influence these behaviors. …
Statistical Modeling Approach To Airline Revenue Management With Overbooking, Sheela Siddappa
Statistical Modeling Approach To Airline Revenue Management With Overbooking, Sheela Siddappa
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
A Revenue Management (RM) method in the airline industry plays a very important role in maximizing revenue under various uncertainty issues, like customer demand, the number of seats to be maintained in inventory, the number of seats to be overbooked, etc. In this dissertation, a Markov decision process (MDP) based approach using statistical modeling is presented. Prior versions of this statistical modeling approach have employed remaining seat capacity ranges from zero to the capacity of the aircraft. In reality, actual remaining capacities are near capacity when the booking process begins and near zero when the flights depart. Thus, our modified …
The Value Of Customer Co-Production In Developing New Products, Samar Mohammad Baqer
The Value Of Customer Co-Production In Developing New Products, Samar Mohammad Baqer
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
The concept of customer co-production has been mentioned in the marketing literature on several occasions. The lack of a clear definition and the poor operationalization in previous literature stimulated the interest to investigate it as a growing marketing concept. This dissertation investigated the perceived value of co-production in developing new products and found that it has an influence on customers' symbolic and functional reasons for purchase. In addition, the moderating effects of business communications and customers being classified classification as early adopters of innovation were found to be significant.

Housing policy as one of the tools for eradicating poverty remains a critical arena for debate, especially in light of the dire situation of impoverished inner cities and growing inequalities between communities in the U.S. Policies aimed towards ameliorating the negative effects of these inequalities on impecunious residents include deconcentrating poverty through the dispersion of public housing residents into more affluent neighborhoods. The logic behind this approach is the assumption that removing barriers and obstacles from low income families by integrating them into middle class neighborhoods will increase the life chances of the low income families. These policies are often …

Are Socially Dominant Men More Facially Dominant And More Prone To Sexual Jealousy?, Chawki Ahmed Belhadi
Psychology Theses - Archive
Previous studies show that men with masculine facial characteristics are perceived as more dominant than men with less masculine facial characteristics. This study investigated whether facially dominant men behaved more dominantly and were more prone to sexual jealousy. Participants were 115 males enrolled in UTA introductory psychology classes. Dominant behavior constituted the number of times participants stuck to their position in a series of cooperative decision making trials; sexual jealousy was measured using a modification of Buss et al's. (1992) jealousy scenario, and facial dominance was measured using subjective ratings. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between facial dominance and …

Constitutionalism, Social Democracy, And Nationalism, And The First Communist Movement In Iran, 1905-1921, Bradley Jahan Borougerdi
History Theses - Archive
Western expansion into Iran during the latter half of the nineteenth century had a significant impact on the country's social, economic, and political development. By the turn of the century, Western ideas of constitutionalism and social democracy had infiltrated Persian society, which set the foundation for modern revolutionary movements to emerge and challenge the traditional social and political order of Persian society. This thesis analyzes the revolutionary movements in Iran during the first two decades of the twentieth century and argues that the failure of these movements can be attributed to internal factionalism in Persian politics and foreign involvement on …

Development Of Three Block Thermal Compact Model And Verification Of Modified Linear Superposition Technique For Stacked Die, Suresh G. Nikalaje
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Over the last few years an impressive amount of progress has been achieved in the field of compact modeling of chip packages. But available compact modeling methods could not address the issue of limitation on the mesh statistics which is major concern while modeling in FEM softwares with limited number of nodes and elements. It is not possible to attain convergence of solution for thermal simulation of detailed model with the constraint on the number of nodes and elements. In this thesis, a simple and straight forward three block (3B) compact modeling method is developed. 3B compact modeling method has …
Novel Preparation Of Polymeric Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Using Phase Separation With Protein Microbubble Incorporation, Ashwin Nair
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been extensively used as a biodegradable and porous tissue scaffold due to their biocompatibility and degradability. Several techniques have been developed for the fabrication of polymeric scaffolds but they all have some limitation or the other which has in turn hampered the growth of cells seeded on them. Salt leached scaffolds have good porosity and large pores but poor mechanical strength and the problem of residual salt even after leaching. Similarly gas foaming scaffolds have shown large pores but poor interconnection with residual ammonium salts. Other methods like thermally induced phase separation and fiber bonding …

Use Of Near Infrared And Visible Spectroscopies To Determine Optical Properties Of Rat Nervous System, Harsha Radhakrishnan
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Changes to the anatomical or physiological structure of the neuronal circuitry are known to produce a change in the optical properties of the tissue under investigation. The goal of this thesis is to determine changes in the light scattering and hemoglobin oxygen saturation in three cases: (i) a normal spinal cord, (ii) demyelinated sciatic nerve, and (iii) spinal cord under neuronal activity induced by peripheral electrical stimulation. We hypothesize that (i) nerve demyelination or degeneration would result in a decrease in light scattering and hemoglobin oxygen saturation and (ii) peripheral electrical stimulation would show an increase in light scattering and …

Mexico's Evolving Outsourcing Market: From Low Tech To High-Tech, Cale Smith
Honors College Theses
Research suggests that competition driven by globalization has diminished Mexico's position as a low cost outsourcing destination due to their increased wage rates. However, the Information Technology (IT) industry in Mexico is capable of substantiating the value of the higher wages as many multi-national corporations (MNCs) are increasingly outsourcing their sophisticated manufacturing to the country. This thesis addresses the future of the IT oursourcing in Mexico and describes how factors contributing to its success can be improved to develop a sustainable competitive advantage for Mexico. Recommendations are provided based on a synergy of the successes that China and India have …

Red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is a serious pest in the southeastern United States. It has caused economic losses in agricultural products, stings can cause anaphylactic shock, and it has reduced biodiversity. S. invicta has displaced native ant species throughout its range, presumably by competitive exclusion. In 1998, S. invicta populations were confirmed in southern New Mexico, resulting in a quarantine of Doña Ana County. Although large populations of the native southern fire ant, S. xyloniMcCook, are common in the Mesilla Valley, only two small populations of S. invicta have been found since the initial quarantine. It is …

The spatial distribution of motile life stages of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch in Kenyan small-scale tomato fields was described by Taylor's power law and an enumerative sampling plan was designed for research purposes. The exponential increase of T. urticae populations during three growing seasons permits the development and use of a simple exponential model for the design of a threshold-based chemical control system. For this purpose, a critical threshold of 440 motile mites per sample unit at the end of the growing season (12 weeks after transplanting) was translated into a proportion of 0.83 infested units in …

A Relational Database Approach For Frequent Subgraph Mining, Subhesh Kumar Pradhan
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Data mining aims at discovering interesting and previously unknown patterns from data sets. Further more, graph-based data mining represents a collection of techniques for mining the relational aspects of data represented as a graph. Complex relationships in data can be represented using graphs and hence graph mining is appropriate for analyzing data that is rich in structural relationships. Database mining of graphs, on the other hand, aims at directly mining graphs stored in a database using SQL queries. Several SQL-based mining algorithms have been developed successfully and their efficiency and scalability have been established. One of them is HDB-Subdue which …
Strategic Exercise Of Options On Non-Traded Assets And Stochastic Volatility In An Incomplete Market: Indifference Pricing And Entropy Methods, Singru Hoe
Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive
The first study explores optimal investment policies for strategic option exercise when the underlying project is not traded. A duopoly model captures strategic interactions, while a partial spanning asset models market incompleteness. The option value to invest is obtained through indifference pricing, i.e., certainty equivalent value. I find that incompleteness narrows the gap between leader and follower entry dates. The follower enters much sooner, and the leader delays slightly compared to classic real options models. Modeling investment income stream as an Arithmetic Brownian motion is a better fit than Geometric Brownian motion, while reducing the necessary numerical approximations for obtaining …

Black Sounds: Hemingway And Duende, Kristine A. Wilson
English Theses - Archive
Along with his efforts to revitalize the Spanish arts in the 1920's and 1930's, Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca gave an address entitled "Play and Theory of Duende" in which he claims duende as a distinctly Spanish brand of artistic inspiration and performative signature bound up with the seemingly antithetical qualities of joy and suffering that dominate the Spanish ethos. I argue that using Lorca's concept of duende as a tool for analyzing the Spanish-themed work of Ernest Hemingway provides a new way of situating Hemingway's work within the Spanish and modernist milieux. To this end, I perform …
Analysis Of Electromagnetic Field In A Switched Reluctance Machine From An Energy Conversion Perspective, Wei Jiang
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
With the recent advancement in power electronics and digital signal processors, switched reluctance machine (SRM) attracts more attention in high speed and harsh environment applications due to its rugged and robust structure. Despite considerable progress in the development of power electronics based control of the SRM, relatively small changes in the magnetic design has been observed. A physically insightful analysis of the electromechanical energy conversion process, origins and spatial distribution of electromagnetic field quantities at a microscopic level can shed light on the process of SRM design, which in turn could create new opportunities for substantial improvement of SRM performance …

Crashworthiness Design Optimization Using Surrogate Models, Cheng-Ho Tho
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Despite the advances in computer technology, the enormous computational cost associated with the large-scale and complex nonlinear crashworthiness simulations renders it to be impractical to rely exclusively on computer simulations for crashworthiness design optimization. A preferable strategy is to employ the computational efficient surrogate model in lieu of the expensive simulations to facilitate the optimization process and design concept exploration. An added advantage of the surrogate models is that they tends to eliminate the high-frequency numerical noise which may hinder the performance of the direct gradient-based optimization technique by constructing smooth crash responses in the crashworthiness analysis. Even thought the …

Child abuse and neglect is a compelling phenomenon that has been attributed to a multitude of factors including maternal substance abuse. A significant number of the women involved with the child welfare system for child abuse or neglect are found to have issues due to substance abuse or dependency. In addition, most women involved with child welfare tend to be single and poor women of color. Still, relatively few studies have focused on these women. This study used an ex post facto design in its aim to increase the understanding of the factors that contribute to substance abuse and child …
