Part-List Cuing Effects In Advertising: When Exposure To Some Advertisements Impairs Recall Of Same-Valenced Ads, Hieu Phuc Nguyen Jul 2006

Part-List Cuing Effects In Advertising: When Exposure To Some Advertisements Impairs Recall Of Same-Valenced Ads, Hieu Phuc Nguyen

Marketing Dissertations - Archive

This study represents the first empirical examination of the inhibitory effect of part-list cuing in emotional print advertisements. It was hypothesized that exposure to a subset of print advertisements as cues impairs recall of the uncued ads. Additionally, exposure to positive cues would only inhibit memory for positive uncued ads, and exposure to negative ads as cues would only impair memory for negative uncued ads. Exposure to neutral ads was expected to inhibit memory for positive, negative, and neutral uncued ads. The effects of emotional versus neutral ads were also tested in both an uncued recall task and a cued …

Nonlinear Finite Element-Based Investigation Of The Effect Of Bedding Thickness On Underground Pipe, Anupong Kararam

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The pipe-soil interaction is studied by using the finite element software, ABAQUS/CAE Version 6.5-1 as a symmetric model of embankment installation to study the effect of bedding property and thickness on pipe-soil interaction with increase in the height of fill. A three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the concrete pipe and surrounding soil is developed. The FEM is capable of simulating material, geometric, and contact nonlinearities which employs a nonlinear incremental solution algorithm. Several different element types and mesh size were tested to obtain the optimum converged mesh. These elements were eight-noded linear brick (C3D8R) and six-noded linear triangular prism …

The opening of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid to wholesale competition began in 1996 that initiated the first stage of deregulation in Texas. In order to relieve generation and transmission constraints, load reduction is considered as a form of available energy and spinning reserve. Afterward, power system becomes more dynamic and creates more opportunities for both electricity suppliers and consumers. Currently, both power supplier and demand consumer can participate in the energy and ancillary services (AS) markets to bid/offer for their energy, capacity, and demand in the ERCOT markets. In order to act as an effective market …

An Emission Model For Lunar Regolith Surfaces Based On Matrix Doubling Method, Darshan Shrestha Jul 2006

An Emission Model For Lunar Regolith Surfaces Based On Matrix Doubling Method, Darshan Shrestha

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

An emission model based on Matrix Doubling Method is implemented for the calculation of emission signatures from the lunar regolith surfaces. The matrix doubling method is used to solve the radiative transfer equations which encompass the volume and surface scattering properties of the medium. The layer and surface are characterized by their corresponding phase matrices which contain adequate information on how the amplitude, phase and polarization of the incident Stokes vector change on being incident in that medium. Emissivity signatures are calculated by solving the transfer equations using matrix doubling method and taking these phase matrices as "boundary conditions". The …

Anti-Viral Capacity Of Quillaja Saponaria Molina Extract Against Vaccinia And Herpes Simplex Virus-1, Matthew Sean Spinks

Biology Theses - Archive

It is well known that Quillaja saponins have the ability to elicit a strong immune response when used as an adjuvant in an ISCOM matrix. However, to date, the antiviral capability of Quillaja saponins has not been documented. Using extracts from the Chilean Soap Bark Tree (Quillaja Saponaria Molina) we document the anti-viral capacities of Quillaja saponins against HSV-1 and Vaccinia. The saponin was ineffective against Vaccinia Virus, however neutralized HSV-1 in a time and temperature dependent manner. In addition, Quillaja Saponins were determined capable of preventing cell-to-cell spread when introduced in solution to cell monolayers.

Collective Voluntary Agreements And The Production Of Less Polluting Products, Rasha Ahmed, Segerson Kathleen Jul 2006

Collective Voluntary Agreements And The Production Of Less Polluting Products, Rasha Ahmed, Segerson Kathleen

Economics Working Papers

Recently, some industries have collectively agreed not to produce models that do not meet an energy efficiency (and hence an environmental) standard. This paper presents a simple model that can be used to examine a voluntary collective agreement to limit or completely eliminate the low efficiency model of a given product (e.g., a low efficiency washing machine). We show that, when there is competition between firms, a collective agreement to limit or even eliminate production of the polluting model can actually increase profits for all firms in the industry. This suggests that a collective agreement of this type might actually …

Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci Jun 2006

Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined how eight adult education practitioners understand spirituality. The investigation defined and grounded the notion of spirituality within a specific religious/theological tradition, Christianity broadly defined. Data were collected via informal, conversational, taped interviews, and several themes emerged. The study used these results to interrogate the discourse of spirituality and found several serious problems including: the nondefinition and misuse by the discourse of the term spirituality, the hazards of individualized spirituality caused by imprecise definitions of the term, a failure to address the issues of faith substantively, and the separation in the discourse of religion from spirituality. The study …

Polymorphism And Growth Behavior Of Low-Trans Fatty Acids Blends Formulated With And Without Emulsifiers, Marina Cerdeira, Silvana Martini, Roberto J. Candal, Maria L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Polymorphism and growth behavior of blends of a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) formulated with and without the addition of sucrose esters (SE) P-170, P-1670, and S-170 were studied by pulsed 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy. The effect of SE on the solid content maximum (S max) or crystallization rate was observed only at low supercooling (values of ΔT below 15°C). The Avrami k n decreased as n values increased, indicating that SE inhibited growth and impeded nucleation. Addition of SFO modified the polymorphic behavior of milk fat, most likely owing …

Colorblind Fraternity: Unseating Racism, Males,, April Leigh Kinkead Jun 2006

Colorblind Fraternity: Unseating Racism, Males,, April Leigh Kinkead

English Theses - Archive

This thesis examines four works by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick, Typee, Omoo, and Benito Cereno as examples of a minority of nineteenth-century American literature that deconstruct negative black male stereotypes and promote unity through brotherhood. Melville works through juxtapositions and reversals in his use of language as a means of unseating such negative stereotypes. In doing so, he invites his audience to challenge and potentially eliminate the racial stereotypes. Melville believed in indirect invitations to reform, such as displacing his characters from his readers' environment, so that racial problems would not seem so "close" them. He also relies upon an ethnically …

However, the enormous amount of data size and its complexity have restricted the progress on video data modeling, indexing and retrieval. In order to get around the problems, we turn to a graph theoretical approach for video database. …

Simulation Of Sensor Responses Of Advanced Security Systems, Janakiram Natarajan Jun 2006

Simulation Of Sensor Responses Of Advanced Security Systems, Janakiram Natarajan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Security systems are becoming an increasingly important area of research. Advanced security detection and surveillance systems that integrates a variety of detection mechanisms, like signals from different kinds of sensors, is expected to yield more accurate assessment than any one sensor analyzed individually. Designing and investigating these systems, to date, has relied primarily on physical deployments and experimentation. While the quality of the results from such efforts is excellent, the need to work with the physical systems directly imposes a substantial research impediment. One obvious possibility for widening the scope of what can be investigated is to employ simulation as …

Exception Handling Using Class Diversity, Qizhi Ye Jun 2006

Exception Handling Using Class Diversity, Qizhi Ye

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Software reliability has been received more and more attention not only in mission critical system but also in commercial software system. Developing robust software must consider faults caused by abnormal situations or exceptions. Although modern programming languages like Java and C++ provide sophisticated exception handling mechanisms for detecting and handling exceptions, many potential runtime exceptions are not caught and handled because runtime exceptions could occur anywhere and could be numerous in a typical program. If an uncaught runtime exception occurs during program execution, then the execution will terminate abnormally, resulting in a system crash. The thesis proposes a framework that …

Studies Toward The Enantioselective Total Synthesis Of The Martinella Alkaloids, Vivek Badarinarayana Jun 2006

Studies Toward The Enantioselective Total Synthesis Of The Martinella Alkaloids, Vivek Badarinarayana

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation consists of two parts. The first part describes the enantioselective total synthesis of martinellic acid. The Martinella alkaloids have attracted considerable attention in the synthetic community over the past few years. This interest is due in large part to their unique structure and useful biological activity (bradykinin receptor antagonist). In model systems we have successfully used the [3+2] azomethine ylide-alkene cycloaddition to construct the heterocyclic core of these alkaloids. The enantioselective approach described herein also involves the azomethine ylide-alkene cycloaddition as a key step in the total synthesis. The pyrrolo[3,2-c]quinoline core of this alkaloid was constructed in an …

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On The Bionomics Of Six African Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), A. Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. Sithanantham

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The life table statistics of six native Kenyan species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea were established using a factitious host Corcyra cephalonica, Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), at eight different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35°C) and two humidity levels (40-50 and 70-80%). The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature …

In contrast, no effect was found on fourth instar O. nubilalis and a low level of toxicity was observed on neonates of …

Principles Of Mentoring Spiritual Leaders In The Pastoral Ministry Of Augustine Of Hippo, Edward Smither May 2006

Principles Of Mentoring Spiritual Leaders In The Pastoral Ministry Of Augustine Of Hippo, Edward Smither

Faculty Dissertations

Though Augustine is highly regarded for his contribution to philosophy and theology, his primary occupation for the last forty years of his life was serving as the bishop of Hippo Regius. A highly personal man with a natural inclination to friendship, Augustine was a bishop-monk who served the church while living in a monastic community with other clergy. Hence, he made monks out of his clergy and regarded the monastery as a group that existed to serve the church. Through intimate contact with the clergy of Hippo as well as spiritual leaders of the fourth and fifth century African church, …

After the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, anti-Americanism increased among predominantly Muslim nations. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to explore the perceptions of 11 international students from predominantly Muslim nations toward the U.S. It also examines whether the students' perceptions have changed since arriving in the United States and whether perceptions could stem from propaganda. Results indicated generally positive perceptions toward America and significantly improved perceptions toward Americans. Perceptions of the U.S. government, the Bush administration and U.S. foreign policy, however, were generally negative -- primarily stemming from the war in Iraq and America's role in the …

Relative Clock Drift Rate Based Secure Time Synchronization For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jae Sung Choi May 2006

Relative Clock Drift Rate Based Secure Time Synchronization For Wireless Sensor Networks, Jae Sung Choi

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Time synchronization is critical issue to many wireless sensor network applications such that target tracking, TDMA radio scheduling, and secure localization. However, the most of existing time synchronization algorithms in wireless sensor networks did not consider malicious attacks in hostile environments. In this thesis, we propose a Relative Clock Drift Rate Based Secure Time Synchronization (RSTS) schemes to address security problems. RSTS alleviates delay attacks and incorrect time stamp transmissions caused by external or internal malicious attackers. We discuss a simple estimation technique to calculate a relative clock drift rate between sender-receiver clocks, because the estimated relative clock drift rate …

Towards Optimum Play-Out Buffering Delay In Voice Over Ip, Ruchir Pramod Shende May 2006

Towards Optimum Play-Out Buffering Delay In Voice Over Ip, Ruchir Pramod Shende

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or transmission of real-time voice packets over the Internet is slowly emerging as a cost-effective alternative to the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). However, varying end-to-end delay and packet loss, which are inherent in a packet-switched network like the Internet, lead to relatively lower quality of VoIP calls. The call quality can be improved by adaptively adjusting the play-out buffer at the receiver to reduce the impact of the delay and jitter. A standard play-out strategy uses a weighted moving average of the mean and variance of network delay to adaptively set the play-out …

Air Jet Impingement For Levitation, James Frederick Huber May 2006

Air Jet Impingement For Levitation, James Frederick Huber

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Traditional part acquisition methods such as vacuum cups and robotic grippers do not meet the handling needs of truly fragile materials, because both of these methods require surface contact. An alternative to these traditional approaches is the use of air jet impingement for levitation. This technique confines impinged air to a thin disk above the target to form radial diffuser. The Bernoulli Effect causes a pressure difference between the fast-moving impinged air above the surface and ambient air below it. The net pressure difference is sufficient to lift objects weighing more than one kilogram using standard shop air. This method …
