The Effects Of Supervisor-Subordinate Goal Congruence On Performance And Turnover Intentions During Expatriation, Marshall Pattie May 2007

The Effects Of Supervisor-Subordinate Goal Congruence On Performance And Turnover Intentions During Expatriation, Marshall Pattie

Management Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation investigates how the quality of the relationship between sending supervisors and expatriates is related to turnover and performance. Utilizing goal congruence and social exchange theories, it is hypothesized that the quality of the relationship between sending supervisors and expatriates mediates goal congruence and the two outcome variables: performance and turnover intentions. Additionally, it is hypothesized that three international factors related to sending supervisors and their business units as well as repatriate plans should be related to goal congruence. The goal examined is the degree to which the expatriation fits into expatriates' career paths at the firm. Regression analysis …

Thermal Effects On Analog Integrated Circuit Design, Md Mahbub Hossain May 2007

Thermal Effects On Analog Integrated Circuit Design, Md Mahbub Hossain

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Analog Integrated Circuit design (IC) is a big challenge in this modern age. Thermal effect has a substantial role in analog ICs performance. Thermal effects on analog IC design have been investigated in this dissertation project. National Semiconductor Corporation's Vertical Bipolar Inter-Company (VBIC) model of dielectrically isolated bipolar junction transistors (DIBJT) with VIP10 and VIP11 processes have been used for the research. These devices are used for the high speed IC design. Self-heat generated inside these devices is confined within the device and degrades the device performance. In addition, the thermal characteristic of a device surrounded by the multiple adjacent …

Study Of Oxide Surfaces Using Time Of Flight Positron Annihilation Induced Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Manori Prasadika Nadesalingam

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit a rich collection of interesting and intriguing properties which can be used for wide variety of applications. In this dissertation, I will discuss the first PAES measurements on vacuum anneal induced changes in the surface layers of Cu2O/Ta, Cu 2O/TCO and oxidized Cu(100) prepared by spray coated, electrochemically deposition and thermal oxidation techniques respectively. PAES measurements on Cu2O/TCO shows that the a very large increase in the intensity of the Cu (M2,3 VV) Auger peak after annealing at 250°C. Similar but significantly smaller changes were observed in the EAES spectra consistent with the fact that …

First Direct Measurement Of The Energy Spectra Of Individual Auger Cascade Steps In Solid Mno, Ag And Pd, Rajalakshmi Sundaramoorthy

Physics Dissertations - Archive

We present the first direct measurements of energy spectra of electrons emitted in the later steps of the Auger cascade processes in solids. Measurements were carried out for the L-->MV-->VVV and L-->MM-->MVV-->VVVV Auger cascades in MnO and L-->MM-->MVV, M-->NV-->VVV Auger cascades in Ag and M-->NV-->VVV Auger cascade for Pd. The spectra associated with the later steps in the cascade were separated from overlapping spectral contribution from other decay processes by acquiring the cascade induced spectra in time coincidence with Auger electrons emitted in the prior cascade step. The Auger …

Alfvénic Accelerated Electrons And Short Burst Auroral Kilometric Radiations Observed By The Fast Satellite, Lun Ma May 2007

Alfvénic Accelerated Electrons And Short Burst Auroral Kilometric Radiations Observed By The Fast Satellite, Lun Ma

Physics Theses - Archive

This investigation is motivated by previous study of short burst radiations (S-bursts) reported by Ergun et al. [2006], who suggested two generation mechanisms of S-bursts: one is the electron cyclotron maser instability due to an unstable ring distribution; the other is an upward electron beam generating upper hybrid resonance. The simulation results reported by Su et al. [2007] support the former mechanism. Only one Earth-based S-burst event was reported prior to our study. A systematic study was performed on particle and field observations from the FAST spacecraft to search for events of S-bursts and Alfvén waves. Eight events involving coexistence …

Analysis Of Tapered Laminated Composite Tubes Under Tension And Torsion, Chethana Shankara Rao May 2007

Analysis Of Tapered Laminated Composite Tubes Under Tension And Torsion, Chethana Shankara Rao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Closed form expressions for determining the displacement and twisting angle of tapered composite tubes are developed. The analytical expressions are developed based on the modified laminated plate theory which includes the tubular wall curvature of the laminate. It is found that the axial deformation and the twisting angle calculated by the current method agree well with the results obtained from the finite element method. The effect of stacking sequence, taper angle and fiber orientations on the axial deformation and twisting angle are studied by using the developed method. It is found that the taper angle plays a significant role on …

Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa May 2007

Permeability Of Municipal Solid Waste In Bioreactor Landfill With Degradation, Kiran Kumar Penmethsa

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Bioreactor landfills are operated and controlled to accelerate refuse decomposition, gas production and biological stabilization of the municipal solid waste (MSW). Leachate recirculation in bioreactor landfill creates a favorable environment for rapid microbial decomposition of the biodegradable components of solid waste. Therefore, clear understanding of the mechanism of moisture movement within the solid waste would be necessary for successful design and operation of the bioreactor landfill. Permeability is an important parameter during the design of leachate collection and recirculation system. In the current study an experimental program was designed to determine the variation of coefficient of permeability of MSW with …

The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal May 2007

The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

"The 3 Pigs," by Ana Torres Villarreal, is an interactive performance, a dramatic parody within the realm of conceptual art. Transplanting the moral from a traditional tale, "The Three Little Pigs," to a current world of politics and iconized and institutional ideas, "The 3 Pigs" questions definitions and ways of acting. The objective was to trigger the interactive process and bring awareness to alliances that attribute identities and provokes fear towards the other. The pigs-wolves situation and the gallery-artist situation are related to the U.S.-Mexico situation. Connected by the idea for the need for "walls" to protect' them from a …

Colonization Patterns Of The Invasive Brazilian Peppertree, Schinus Terebinthifolius, In Florida, D. A. Williams, E. Muchugu, W. A. Overholt, J. P. Cuda

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Invasive species are believed to spread through a process of stratified dispersal consisting of short-distance diffusive spread around established foci and human mediated long-distance jumps. Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius), native to South America, was introduced twice as an ornamental plant into Florida, USA, just over 100 years ago. A previous study indicated that these two introductions were from genetically differentiated source populations in the native range. In this study, we took advantage of these contrasting genetic signatures to study the spatial spread of Brazilian peppertree across its entire range in Florida. A combination of spatial genetic and geostatistical analyses using …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

We report here the in planta production of the recombinant vaccinia virus B5 antigenic domain (pB5), an attractive component of a subunit vaccine against smallpox. The antigenic domain was expressed by using efficient transient and constitutive plant expression systems and tested by various immunization routes in two animal models. Whereas oral administration in mice or the minipig with collard-derived insoluble pB5 did not generate an anti-B5 immune response, intranasal administration of soluble pB5 led to a rise of B5-specific immunoglobulins, and parenteral immunization led to a strong anti-B5 immune response in both mice and the minipig. Mice immunized i.m. with …

Influence Of Population Reduction On Predator Home Range Size And Spatial Overlap, Shandra Nicole Frey, Michael R. Conover Apr 2007

Influence Of Population Reduction On Predator Home Range Size And Spatial Overlap, Shandra Nicole Frey, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The increasing populations of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) in the Intermountain West have contributed to low waterfowl recruitment in recent decades. This effect prompted the need for predator removal at many waterfowl refuges, such as the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (BRMBR) in the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Our study examined the effects of the removal of predatory mammals at the BRMBR on the home range size and spatial overlap of the remaining populations of red foxes, raccoons, and striped skunks. The removal of predators through traps, snares, and night-shooting created a …

Improved Refinement Coefficients' Coding In Scalable H.264, Rahul Panchal Apr 2007

Improved Refinement Coefficients' Coding In Scalable H.264, Rahul Panchal

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis proposes to replace the adaptation used to select VLC table for coding of the refinement coefficient by signaling to the decoder which table should be used for which macroblock type (Inter or Intra) in scalable H.264. This part of the proposal aims at reducing decoder complexity and ensuring proper table selection when both macroblock types are present within one slice. The contribution further proposes to extend the method used in SVC to increase coding efficiency of CABAC refinement coefficient coding to "VLC" refinement coefficients coding. All the coding tools are integrated into JSVM_7_10 and the performance is tested. …

Multiplexing H.264 Video With Aac Audio Bit Streams, Demultiplexing And Achieving Lip Synchronization During Playback, Harishankar Murugan

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

H.264, MPEG-4 part-10 or AVC [5], is the latest digital video codec standard which has proven to be superior than any early standards in terms of compression ratio, quality, bit rates and error resilience. However, the standard just defines a video codec and has no mention of any audio compression. In order to have a meaningful delivery of the video to the end user, we need to associate an audio stream along with it. AAC (advanced audio coding) [1] is the latest digital audio codec standard defined in MPEG-2 and later in MPEG-4 with few changes. The audio quality of …

Freeze-Frame: Time And Vision In Three Early Welty Stories, Barbara L. Coots Apr 2007

Freeze-Frame: Time And Vision In Three Early Welty Stories, Barbara L. Coots

English Theses - Archive

Eudora Welty's early short stories provide a fitting career transition from photographer to writer. In particular, her creative figuration of time--enriched by her employment of photographic vision--graces her earliest collection, A Curtain of Green. In this paper, I apply a critical approach based on the narrative theory of time by Paul Ricoeur to discover meaning in three of those stories: "A Curtain of Green," "The Key," and "A Memory." Using Ricoeur's proposition of three mimetic stages--prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration--and taking the liberty to peer through the camera lens, I identify a unifying theme of feminine emergence that finds its definition …

Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson Apr 2007

Ladies And Loners: A Comparative Gender Study Of The Romance And Popular Western, Courtney Rena Henderson

English Theses - Archive

Despite the efforts of readers, writers and cultural critics, the fact remains that romance and the Western genres are considered low art. The real impetus behind this paper is not whether or not or even why they are considered low art. The important questions for me, the cultural critic, are: Why are these books so popular? What do they offer their readers? In considering their popular appeal, I think the implication of gender is the most illuminating piece of the puzzle. In this thesis, I will analyze the gender-specific fantasies offered in the Western romance novel and the popular Western, …

Transcoding From H264 Bitstream To Mpeg-2 Bitstream, Sreejana Sharma Apr 2007

Transcoding From H264 Bitstream To Mpeg-2 Bitstream, Sreejana Sharma

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

H.264/AVC was recently developed by the JVT (Joint Video Team). This new standard fulfills significant coding efficiency, simple syntax specifications and seamless integration of video coding into all current protocols and multiplex architectures. The H.264 specification represents a significant advancement in the field of video coding technology by providing MPEG-2 comparable video quality at an average of half the required bandwidth. Since widespread use of H.264 is anticipated, many legacy systems including all Digital TVs and home receivers use MPEG-2. This leads to the need for an efficient architecture that significantly employs the lower cost of H.264 video and does …

A Piecewise Linear Classifier, Abdul Aziz Abdurrab Apr 2007

A Piecewise Linear Classifier, Abdul Aziz Abdurrab

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

A piecewise linear network is discussed which classifies N-dimensional input vectors. The network uses a distance measure to assign incoming input vectors to an appropriate cluster. Each cluster has a linear classifier for generating class discriminants. A training algorithm is described for generating the clusters and discriminants. A pruning algorithm is also described. The algorithm is applied after the network has grown completely, i.e, it has achieved the maximum number of clusters. The pruning algorithm eliminates the least important clusters, one at a time, leading to a more compact network. Theorems are given which relate the network's performance to that …
