A Critical Disconnect: In Pain Management In The United States, Dr. Jeanette A. Mcneill Ph.D.
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
Disparity in health care, and in particular care for pain related to disease, is a concern for many health professionals as well as those in the general population. Disparities in pain management for vulnerable societal groups, specifically the members of racial and ethnic groups, the poor and the elderly, are violations of the principles of social justice. This paper presents evidence of disparities in management of pain and cancer pain in vulnerable groups, explores the issues, and recommends health professional, individu alignal and system level actions to address disparity in this important area of health care.

This course is designed to help students in doctoral programs write a literature review that is appropriate for a dissertation or thesis proposal. The course will emphasize skills for writing the Problem Statement and conducting and writing the Review of Literature. Even though the Procedures section is an important part of the dissertation proposal, it will not be dealt with extensively in this class. Other courses which deal specifically with the appropriate design, analysis, and interpretation issues which the student will use for his or her research should be taken prior to this course. Substantial time will be devoted to …

Scuba Diving Buddies: Rights, Obligations, And Liabilities, Phyllis G. Coleman
Faculty Scholarship
Phyllis Coleman, Scuba Diving Buddies: Rights, Obligations, and Liabilities, 20 University of San Fransisco Maritime Law Journal 75 (2008). A common misconception is that scuba diving is dangerous; the reality is that divers are more likely to be hurt in their cars driving to the dive site than in an underwater accident. Arguably one reason the sport is so safe is the widespread, and often mandatory, use of the buddy system. A buddy expects his partner to perform a variety of tasks, which include assisting during an emergency. However, a glaring omission in the legal literature is the important …

Paleoecology Of Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone Interdune Deposits, Nathan Daniel Wilkens
Paleoecology Of Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone Interdune Deposits, Nathan Daniel Wilkens
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
The Lower Jurassic Navajo Sandstone represents a desert that covered more than 366,000 square kilometers. Localized interdune deposits commonly occur along the eastern edge of this desert that include carbonates, bioturbated layers, and plant fossils. Previous studies of these deposits focused on specific fossil types or isolated sites. This study involved a comprehensive analysis of the paleoecology of interdune deposits with an integrated approach combining paleontology, sedimentology and geochemistry. The methods used in this study were devised to test specific paleoecological and preservational questions, including water sources and geochemistry, sedimentation mechanisms, fossil identification and paleoecology, taphonomy, and diagenesis. Three hypotheses …
Investor Reaction To New Issuances Of U.S. High-Yield Debt, David R. Wolfe
Investor Reaction To New Issuances Of U.S. High-Yield Debt, David R. Wolfe
College of Business and Economics
This paper investigates firms issuing high-yield debt and the impact on their stock price by identifying determinants of the negative abnormal return that surrounds the announcement of an issue in the short-run. It is learned the length, coupon payment and amount of the issue are significant in explaining the CAR as is the age of the firm, first-time issuers and the marketplace where its stock trades. Firm performance ratios including the current and total-asset-turnover ratio also have explanatory power. These determinants of the CAR have an explanatory power approaching 55%.

The molecule of the title compound, C(18)H(14)N(4), lies on a center of inversion such that there is one half-mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The N-N single bond adopts a trans configuration and the indole fused-ring system is nearly coplanar with the -CH=N-N=CH- fragment [dihedral angle = 9.8 (2)°]. Adjacent mol-ecules are linked by indole-azine N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds into a layer motif.

The Sn atom in the title compound, [Sn(C4H9)2(C7H5O3)2], is chelated by the carboxylate groups of 2-hydroxybenzoate liagnds, and exists in a six-coordinate skew-trapezoidal bipyramidal coordination geometry [C—Sn—C = 140.1 (3)°].

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In the title compound, C(37)H(38)N(4)O(6), four five-membered nitro-gen-bearing rings are nearly coplanar. Two N atoms in two these five-membered rings have attached H atoms, which contribute to the formation of intra-molecular N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds [N⋯N = 2.713 (5)-3.033 (6) Å].
Ownership Of Dual Class Shares And Passive Investment Strategies, Christopher J. Marquette, Thomas G.E. Williams
Ownership Of Dual Class Shares And Passive Investment Strategies, Christopher J. Marquette, Thomas G.E. Williams
College of Business and Economics
Previous studies of firms with two classes of stock find a price premium for the class with superior voting rights over the restricted voting rights shares. This premium changes over time and is related to the likelihood of a contested takeover attempt. These findings have implications for both passive and active investors. We find that for passive, buy-and-hold investors, restricted voting shares dominate superior voting shares in mean-variance space. This relationship also holds for a four factor model specification of stock returns. Our evidence indicates that passive, buy-and-hold investors can achieve a higher return with restricted vote shares than superior …

This is an important birthday for the Times, (125 years!) and this album is one way of celebrating with the neighbors who helped us reach that milestone. Way back when, baseball fans gathered around the newspaper offices, while the editors called out the running score of World Series games from the telegraph wire. they could not have imagined that their town would have its own baseball team competing in the World Series, or that the newspaper could send that news around the world on something called the Internet. As the town grew, so did the newspaper. It campaigned to protect …

Semi-Analytical Complex Variable Based Stochastic Finite Element Method, Weiya Jin
Semi-Analytical Complex Variable Based Stochastic Finite Element Method, Weiya Jin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The stochastic finite element method (SFEM) is an approach that allows an analyst to define material, load, and geometry parameters as random variables to represent uncertainty in an engineering problem. The method is then used to estimate the probability of exceeding specified performance thresholds. A necessary ingredient for this analysis is consistent, accurate and efficient algorithms for computing finite element response sensitivities. In this work, the semi-analytical complex variable method (SACVM) is introduced as a method for computing accurate response sensitivities of stochastic models. The SACVM incorporates the complex variable method (CVM) with the semi-analytical method (SAM). It takes advantage …
Corrosion Behavior Of Zn-Ni Coatings Deposited By Electrolytic Plasma Processing, Giancarlo Rios
Corrosion Behavior Of Zn-Ni Coatings Deposited By Electrolytic Plasma Processing, Giancarlo Rios
Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
In the current research project, three groups of Zn-Ni coatings of various Ni contents were deposited on comercial carbon steel by electrolytic plasma processing (EPP), a novel surface modification technique. The coating characteristics were studied along with their corrosion behavior in order to determine their potential as electroplated Cd coating replacements. The latter electroplated coatings are currently used in aerospace applications but are toxic and hazardous to humans and the environment. Coating surfaces and cross sections were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while compositional analysis was conducted by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Phase structure analysis was carried out by x-ray …
