On Reducing Call Drop Outs By Improving Bit Error Rate Performance In A Gsm Mobile Communications System, Sudeep Sharma

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Call Drop Out is one of the most annoying problems in Mobile Communications. It is one of the most important Quality of Service (QoS) indicators for a mobile carrier. Over the years, many strategies have been proposed to solve the problem of call drop out. But the problem is still prevalent. One of the important reasons for call drop outs is high Bit Error Rate (BER). In general, many existing wireless systems set a threshold BER before a call is dropped. In this work, our intent is to reduce the call drop out due to high BER. Towards that end, …

The Influence Of A Strong Versus Weak Sense Of Self In Same-Sex Dyadic Interactions, Ronen Cuperman Mar 2008

The Influence Of A Strong Versus Weak Sense Of Self In Same-Sex Dyadic Interactions, Ronen Cuperman

Psychology Theses - Archive

The goal of this study was to examine the influence of the participants' sense of self on the behaviors they displayed and the perceptions they reported in initial unstructured interactions. Participants were 82 male and 92 female students randomly assigned into same-sex and mixed-sex dyads, corresponding with each participant's sense of self (strong-strong, strong-weak, and weak-weak). Using Ickes et al.'s (1986) unstructured dyadic interaction paradigm, the resulting interactions occurring between dyad members were covertly audio- and videotaped, and later coded for a wide range of verbal and nonverbal behaviors. Although more interactional involvement was expected to occur for participants having …

Concurrent programs contain more than one thread that executes concurrently to accomplish a particular task. Since the threads in a concurrent program work together to accomplish a common goal, they share the data, code, resources and address space of their process. This reduces the overhead involved in creating and managing the threads but leads to side effects like race conditions, critical section problem and deadlocks. There are several operating system constructs to solve these issues such as locks, semaphores, monitors etc. Locks are associated with each object to control access of shared resources. Semaphores can be described as counters used …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Concurrent programs play a vital role in the world of software engineering. Concurrent programs are used in various fields such as safety critical applications, applications involving advanced graphical user interface, operating system implementation etc. Concurrent programs due to their inherent multi-threaded nature pose a challenge to software engineers not only in coding but also in ensuring data consistency and accuracy. One of the important software constructs used by concurrent programmers to handle critical sections and data synchronization is monitors. A monitor is an encapsulation of shared data, operations on the data and any synchronization required to access the data~\cite{CarTai06:ModMulti}. Monitors …

The Meaning Of Predatory Specialization As Illustrated By Aelurillus M-Nigrum, An Ant-Eating Jumping Spider (Araneae: Salticidae) From Azerbaijan, Elchin F. Huseynov, Robert R. Jackson, Fiona R. Cross

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The distinctions between a predator's diet, its prey-choice behaviour and its preference are illustrated in a study of Aelurillus m-nigrum Kulczyn'ski, a salticid spider from Azerbaijan. The natural diet of A. m-nigrum was determined from records of individuals feeding in the field (N = 58). Ten arthropod orders were represented. Nine were from the class Insecta (Coleoptera, Collembola, Diptera, Heteroptera, Homoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Psocoptera) and one from the class Arachnida (Araneae). Of 50 insects among the prey, 21 (42%) were Hymenoptera, with ants (family Formicidae) alone accounting for 31% of all prey records. Although the majority (69%) of the …

Under The Yellow Tape: Working Within The Medical, Legal, And Judicial Systems, John C. Thomas

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The types of problems addressed in an office differ dramatically from those that happen in the context of violent crimes, horrific accidents, and hostage scenes. The first contact with victims might be in homes, streets, emergency rooms, shelters, jails, and law enforcement offices. Arriving at a scene that is marked by yellow tape is daunting. Counselors must develop a frame of mind that allows them to get into the trenches. Additionally, they must work collaboratively with other crisis response systems to ensure that victims receive timely holistic care. Following are some principles to guide counselors in working with multiple systems.

Nutritional Quality Of Organic, Conventional, And Seasonally Grown Broccoli Using Vitamin C As A Marker, Shahla M. Wunderlich, Charles Feldman, Shannon Kane, Taraneh Hazhin

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Organically labeled vegetables are considered by many consumers to be healthier than non-organic or 'conventional' varieties. However, whether the organic-labeled vegetables contain more nutrients is not clear. The purpose of this study is to examine the nutritional quality of broccoli using vitamin C, a fragile and abundant nutrient, in broccoli as a biomarker. The vitamin C content was assayed (2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol method) in broccoli samples obtained from supermarkets that are considered the point of consumer consumption. These samples were obtained during different seasons when the broccoli could be either harvested locally or shipped far distances. The findings indicate that vitamin C …

Simulation Analysis Of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems With Diversity Reception, Sai Sravan Bharadwaj Karri

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

With the rapid increase in the utility of voice and data services, there is a demand for higher data rates and reliability in wireless communications. A wireless communication channel is prone to degrading effects such as multi-path fading, ISI etc. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a candidate for the 4^{th} generation wireless systems, mitigates these effects and supports higher data rates. The performance analysis of a complex system like OFDM,is a challenging task where analytical methods become cumbersome to be used. Simulation based approaches provide a fair estimate of the performance in such cases. In this thesis, the performance of an …

P. parvum Carter is a haptophyte that occurs world wide in both fresh and brackish waters. Though P. parvum blooms occur world wide under a variety of environmental conditions, it occurs during the cooler months of the year in Texas. Various treatment combinations of temperatures, salinity and limiting nutrients were used to test the hypothesis that the interaction of these factors would affect the abundance and toxicity of P. parvum. In addition to testing various above mentioned factors and their interactions, P. parvum was grown in mixed species cultures with major competitors from a natural lake community (Lake Whitney) to …

Effect Of Processing Conditions On The Crystallization Behavior And Destabilization Kinetics Of Oil-In-Water Emulsions, Silvana Martini, Megan Tippetts

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to systematically study the effect of processing conditions on the crystallization behavior and destabilization mechanisms of oil-in-water emulsions. The effect of crystallization temperature (T c) and homogenization conditions on both thermal behavior and destabilization mechanisms were analyzed. Results show that the crystallization of lipids present in the emulsions was inhibited when compared with bulk lipids as evidenced by a lower onset and peak temperature (T on and Tp, respectively) in differential scanning calorimetry crystallization exotherms. The smaller the droplet size in the emulsion, the more significant the inhibition (lower T on and T p). …

Health-Culture And Social Justice: What Challenges Do They Present In Today’S Diverse And Globalized World?, Dr. Francis Musa Boakari Ph.D.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

In matters of health and culture, For some, uncertainty is the motor of life; For others, anything only is because it is explainable; Not just any explanations, but those that are “data-based.” Still for some individuals, phenomena can be both certain and uncertain. For this third class, “believables” are found in-between what is and what can be. Subjectivity and context may be primordial in many things HUMAN, but Equity in opportunities and access to social goods and services, Dignity for all human beings under every circumstance, and Respect for self and others at all times, are even much more basic. …

Social Justice And Health Care In Nigeria With Special Reference To The Mbaise Area, Augustine Amangeh

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Nigeria is a country that lacks sufficient medical facilities to meet the needs of the population. Most people rely on folk medicine and dibias when they are ill. There are many reasons for this, including the expense, scarcity of medical facilities, fear of modern medicine, and acceptance of traditional beliefs and practices. In response to the needs of the people of my village I was able to help start a children’s hospital which has now been expanded to serve the health care needs of all the people.

Addressing Health Care Disparities: A Foot Care Program In An Economically Disadvantaged Community, Perla Zarate Abbott, Annette Etnyre M.S.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

The concept of social justice emphasizes the need for the basic essentials of life, including health care, for all. Catholic social teaching confirms this with the principles of human dignity, common good and community, and option for the poor and vulnerable. When health care access and quality is compromised, persons with diabetes experience a greater risk for complications including a higher risk for lower extremity amputations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005). Poverty and ethnic minority status are accompanied by health care disparities as reflected in a higher incidence of lower extremity amputation in these groups. (Wachtel, 2005). A …
