A Diachronic Perspective Of Marine Shell Use From Structure B1 At Blackman Eddy, Belize, Jennifer Lynn Cochran Jan 2009

A Diachronic Perspective Of Marine Shell Use From Structure B1 At Blackman Eddy, Belize, Jennifer Lynn Cochran

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

This thesis examines the marine shell artifacts recovered from Structure B1 at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize. Typological and taxonomic analyses provided useful information on the types of artifacts used and the species utilized at the site. Two categories were identified in this assemblage, 1) worked shell artifacts and 2) shell debitage. An analysis of both worked shell artifacts and shell debitage was important to this study as it provided information about the use and significance of each category in the past. A contextual analysis helped to identify patterns of use and deposition. Examining the contextual designations of all …

Guiltless Girls: Unpacking 100-Calorie Snacks, Lauren London Jan 2009

Guiltless Girls: Unpacking 100-Calorie Snacks, Lauren London

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The intended purpose of this paper is to consider how 100 calorie snacks are primarily advertised and produced for women. Little research has been done on 100 calorie snacks as they were introduced to the food market in 2004. Portioned control snacks came to be another way for the food industry to prey on women's insecurities about their looks and their weight. Although 100 calorie snacks are marketed as a sensible snacking tool they are geared towards women as a weight loss product. First, I examined what society believes is the "idealized" woman and how many women strive to become …

The three tests are 1) Classifier Comprehension Test; 2) Classifier Production test; 3) Classifier Prototype Test. In the first test, subjects were asked to match an object that can be denoted by a Chinese classifier listed among …

Narrative Storyline Marking In Safaliba: Determining The Meaning And Discourse Function Of A Typologically-Suspect Pronoun Set, Paul Alan Schaefer Jan 2009

Narrative Storyline Marking In Safaliba: Determining The Meaning And Discourse Function Of A Typologically-Suspect Pronoun Set, Paul Alan Schaefer

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study examines the meaning and discourse functions of a typologically unusual set of pronouns (the "N-pronoun" set) in Safaliba, a little-studied Gur language of western Ghana. The phonological structure of the N-pronouns suggests derivation from the regular pronoun form joined to a subject focus marker, rendering suspect the hypothesis that the N-pronoun exists as an independent form. In isolated sentences, substitution of N-pronouns for those of the regular set produces no immediately obvious difference in meaning, suggesting a discourse or pragmatic function.Three main areas of investigation are pursued: the grammatical contexts where the N-pronouns can and cannot occur; the …

Autonomous Abstraction Of Policies Based On Policy Homomorphism, Srividhya Rajendran Jan 2009

Autonomous Abstraction Of Policies Based On Policy Homomorphism, Srividhya Rajendran

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A life long learning agent performing in a complex and dynamic environment needs the ability to learn increasingly complex tasks over time. These agents over their lifetime have to learn new tasks, adapt the policies of already learned tasks and extract and reuse the knowledge gained to learn new, more complex tasks. To do this, they need methods that allow them to autonomously extract knowledge from the already learned policy instances and reuse the knowledge gained to learn related tasks in novel environments. This dissertation presents a novel approach that enables an agent to autonomously abstract reusable skills and concepts using …

Sequence Evolution Of Recurrently Recruited Retroposed Genes In Drosophila And Their Possible Role In Meiotic Drive, Charles David Tracy Jan 2009

Sequence Evolution Of Recurrently Recruited Retroposed Genes In Drosophila And Their Possible Role In Meiotic Drive, Charles David Tracy

Biology Theses - Archive

Gene duplications are a valuable source of genetic information that can evolve under positive selection creating a new gene function without affecting the original function.A gene duplication mechanism is retroposition. Retroposed copies of genes (retrogenes) are created by reverse transcription of a mRNA into the host organism's genome producing a new sequence that has the same protein coding capacity as the parental gene but lacks introns and regulatory regions. Ran and Dntf-2 are genes involved in nuclear transport that have given rise to retrogenes three times in the Drosophila genus.Recently, genes involved in nuclear transport such as Ran and Dntf-2 …

Scorpionate Supported And Unsupported Carbonyl And Ethylene Complexes Of Group 11 Metals, Mauro Fianchini Jan 2009

Scorpionate Supported And Unsupported Carbonyl And Ethylene Complexes Of Group 11 Metals, Mauro Fianchini

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Carbon monoxide (CO) and small olefins represent perhaps the simplest, but most important ligand systems in coordination/organometallic chemistry. Simple carbonyl and ethylene compounds have started to appear in the field since the early nineteen century. Due to their peculiar electronic properties, strong bonds to late transition metal cations such as Cu¹, Ag¹, and Au¹ are generally discouraged. However, intermediates involving M-CO or M-olefin (where M = Cu¹, Ag¹, Au¹) have been claimed to be key-steps in reactions and industrial processes involving coinage metals. Unfortunately, experimental data on coinage metal complexes with CO and olefins are scarce due to the difficulty …

Enantiomeric Separations And New Chiral Stationary Phases, Chunlei Wang Jan 2009

Enantiomeric Separations And New Chiral Stationary Phases, Chunlei Wang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Chirality is an important concern for biological activity because asymmetry dominates biological processes at a molecular level. After nearly thirty years of development, liquid chromatographic separations on chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have become the state-of-art technology for resolution of enanantiomeric compounds. However, with the trend in the pharmaceutical industry to replace racemate drugs with their single enantiomer forms, chiral methods are in ever increasing demand. The efficient development of enantiomeric separation methods is still challenging and time consuming. In this thesis, we present new approaches for the enantiomeric separation of two important pharmaceutical compounds, the development of three new CSPs, …

Non-Linear Finite Element Dynamic Analysis Of The Effect Of Compaction On Underground Conduits, Anupong Kararam Jan 2009

Non-Linear Finite Element Dynamic Analysis Of The Effect Of Compaction On Underground Conduits, Anupong Kararam

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Construction loads are an important but often overlooked factor in underground pipe design and installation. Common compaction equipments used in pipeline construction can be a major contributor to pipe damage. To reduce load concentrations in excess of the design loads, construction equipment should be kept at a safe distance above the pipe location. This study investigates the behavior of a reinforced concrete pipeline system under a compaction process. The full-scale experimental test was conducted using a Type-2 standard trench installations soil and minimum compaction requirement. Using a compaction machine "hoe pack" and including the weight of a backhoe, a maximum dynamic …

Ros-Mediated Oxidative Stress Influence Anti-Apoptotic Genes And Cyt C Release In Hyperglycemic Mouse Kidneys To Initiate Late Nephropathic Complications, Krina Shah, Mayur S. Parmar, Sidhartha D. Ray Jan 2009

Ros-Mediated Oxidative Stress Influence Anti-Apoptotic Genes And Cyt C Release In Hyperglycemic Mouse Kidneys To Initiate Late Nephropathic Complications, Krina Shah, Mayur S. Parmar, Sidhartha D. Ray

HPD Articles

Decades of intense research has shown that hyperglycemiainduced ROS production can lead to a redox-imbalance causing oxidative stress (OS) in a variety of target organs in vivo. In the absence of an efficient antioxidant counteracting system, massive OS often leads to activation of stress-responsive signaling pathways resulting in deregulated expression of pro-survival and/or pro-death genes. Persistent deregulation of such pathways eventually masterminds late complications of diabetes. Most studies hold hyperglycemia-induced OS as the ‘cause’, and premature onset of apoptosis as the ‘effect’. This ‘cause and effect’ axis ultimately initiates the development and progression of macro and microvascular complications including diabetic …

Racing To Success By Identifying Key Performance Drivers, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Susan B. Hughes Jan 2009

Racing To Success By Identifying Key Performance Drivers, Kathy Paulson Gjerde, Susan B. Hughes

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This article focuses on ways to identify key performance drivers (KPDs) and key performance indicators (KPIs). Unfortunately, lists of KPIs published in the past often focus on one industry and assume a generic business strategy. In addition, an overemphasis on financial measures will mean that KPIs will reflect past activities rather than signaling future performance. Managers need to develop meaningful metrics for their own businesses, not use generic KPIs. This is particularly important in small and medium-sized enterprises. How adept are you at this task? Do you know what drives net income for your organization?

Excel Interface For The Kansas Geological Survey Slug Test Model, Steven P. Esling Jan 2009

Excel Interface For The Kansas Geological Survey Slug Test Model, Steven P. Esling

Computer Programs and Code

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) developed a semi-analytical solution for slug tests that incorporates the effects of partial penetration, anisotropy, and the presence of variable conductivity well skins. The solution can simulate either confined or unconfined conditions. The original model, written in FORTRAN, has a text-based interface with rigid input requirements and limited output options. We recreated the main routine for the KGS model as a Visual Basic macro that runs in most versions of Microsoft Excel and built a simple-to-use Excel spreadsheet interface that automatically displays the graphical results of the test. A comparison of the output from the …

On-Chip Liquid-Liquid Extraction And Separation Using Digital Microfluidics, Praveen Kunchala Jan 2009

On-Chip Liquid-Liquid Extraction And Separation Using Digital Microfluidics, Praveen Kunchala

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis, on-chip liquid-liquid microextraction and separation using electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidics was demonstrated by considering room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and DI water as two liquid phases, which form immiscible interface with each other. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been actively investigated as replacements for the organic solvents and various "task-specific" ionic liquids (TSIL) are being developed which exhibit many attractive properties such as selectivity to specific biomolecules. Liquid-liquid extraction and separation using EWOD digital microfluidic device with model extraction experiments have been demonstrated, one was extraction of organic dye from RTIL (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [bmim][NTf2]) …

Development Of New Chiral Selectors For Liquid Chromatography And Their Performance Relative To Established Chiral Stationary Phases (Csps), Ping Sun

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

HPLC with chiral stationary phases (CSPs) has proven to be the most widely applicable and versatile technique for enantiomeric separations. This dissertation discusses new research in three important areas of enantiomeric separations: HPLC method developments for target chiral analytes using the existing CSPs, mechanistic investigations by NMR, and development of new HPLC CSPs. Two classes of commercial chiral stationary phases (cyclodextrin-type and macrocyclic glycopeptide-type) were evaluated by separating specific groups of chiral analytes, including β-lactam compounds and ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes. The effects of chiral selector structures, mobile phase compositions, and analyte structures have been examined. For Ru(II) complexes, the newly …

Desecrating Scriptures, James W. Watts Jan 2009

Desecrating Scriptures, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

Desecrations of books of scripture appear regularly in media coverage of religious and political conflicts. Twenty-first century news media have reported scripture desecrations in various Western, Middle Eastern, African, and South Asian countries. Though political tensions also arise from the desecration of sacred sites, objects, and persons, books of scripture have emerged as particularly potent objects of contestation. That is because, as a (very) old form of media themselves, scriptures encapsulate the religious experiences of many people who are used to handling the physical book with veneration. News of such a book’s desecration thus inverts a common religious experience and …

Imagining Judith: An Examination Of Judith's Representation In The Middle English Metrical Paraphrase Of The Old Testament, Terri Vaughn Jan 2009

Imagining Judith: An Examination Of Judith's Representation In The Middle English Metrical Paraphrase Of The Old Testament, Terri Vaughn

English Dissertations - Archive

The poet-paraphraser of The Middle English Metrical Paraphrase of the Old Testament (MEMPOT) imagines Judith and other women biblical characters as courtly ladies, whose performance and dress reflect the values and customs of literary courtesy, as well as the poet's interpretation of Christian morality. Judith's narrative in particular resonates with the positive views accorded to women by some medieval romance texts and yet supersedes these by positioning Judith as mobile-able to move independently within the world of men and aggressively verbal commanding her fellow Hebrews and advising the Assyrian general. These characteristics go beyond the mobility and verbal acuity of …

Algorithm Developement For Adaptive Grid Generation Using Galerkin Finite Element Method, Monalkumar Patel Jan 2009

Algorithm Developement For Adaptive Grid Generation Using Galerkin Finite Element Method, Monalkumar Patel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The adaptive grid concept is developed in order to achieve more accurate and stable results for the numerical simulations of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). There are two main types of strategies used for adaptive grids: local refinement by increasing the number of elements (h-refinement) and deforming grids where the number of elements remains fixed (r-refinement). The h-refinement method requires inserting additional elements and nodes in a certain region of the mesh. This significantly affects the software data structure and makes programming more difficult. To maintain the same data structure, the method must delete the same number of nodes from another …
