Autonomic Trust Management In Dynamic Systems, Brent Lagesse Jan 2009

Autonomic Trust Management In Dynamic Systems, Brent Lagesse

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Research in pervasive computing is aimed at creating environments where users can seamlessly benefit from ubiquitous computing resources despite the complexity of the environment. Providing security in such systems is a difficult task since traditional security mechanisms often require significant user attention and do not scale well to large, mobile, and open environments. To combat this problem, distributed trust has been proposed to provide security in pervasive systems. While much research has been performed in the area, many vulnerabilities and insufficiencies still exist, especially in mobile ad-hoc systems that cannot support distributed trust mechanisms requiring pre-existing infrastructure and cooperation. Dynamic …

Strategic Human Resource Management At The Crossroads: Relationships Among Human Resource Capital, Overlapping Tenure, Behaviors, And Performance, Christopher Harris Jan 2009

Strategic Human Resource Management At The Crossroads: Relationships Among Human Resource Capital, Overlapping Tenure, Behaviors, And Performance, Christopher Harris

Management Dissertations - Archive

Empirical work in strategic human resource management has tended to focus solely on the relationship between human resource practices and firm performance. This study attempts to shift the focus of strategic human resource management to the human resource pool to examine the influence that the human resource has on performance. Additionally, this study examines the social capital variable of overlapping tenure, which is the amount of time individuals have worked together towards common performance outcomes. The resource-based view of the firm is employed as the guiding theoretical framework in which to examine the relationships of human capital and social capital …

The Role Of Intuition In Ethical Decision Making, James Richard Guzak Jan 2009

The Role Of Intuition In Ethical Decision Making, James Richard Guzak

Management Dissertations - Archive

The literature regarding ethical decision making has focused almost exclusively on examination of variables that test relationships between individual or situational differences and ethicality. These examinations, on the whole, have not been fruitful. Little attention has been given to the actual process of ethical decision making to try to explain how ethical decisions are made, not just under what circumstances they might occur. Recently, some authors have begun to suggest that intuition and affect might play an important role in our ethical decision making processes. This paper examines evidence as to whether the ethical decision making process uses both rationality …

Modeling An Instrumented (Tractor-Semitrailer Combination) Vehicle: Using System Identification Methods, Bito Irie Jan 2009

Modeling An Instrumented (Tractor-Semitrailer Combination) Vehicle: Using System Identification Methods, Bito Irie

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis, properties of the input-output relationships of a tractor-semitrailer combination vehicle were analyzed. Predictive models of the system were identified using only input-output data collected separately but for the same portion of the road. A vehicle equipped with an inertial profiling system and a strain gauge instrumented truck were used to collect the input and output data, respectively. Input-output combinations such as single-input-single-output (SISO), multiple-input-single-output (MISO), and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) representing the vehicle models were investigated using the polynomial and state-space black-box modeling (i.e., system identification) techniques. Comparisons among measured and k-steps ahead predicted outputs and residual analysis were …

Electrical Detection Of Single-Based Dna Mutation Using Functionalized Nanoparticles, Mohammud R. Noor Jan 2009

Electrical Detection Of Single-Based Dna Mutation Using Functionalized Nanoparticles, Mohammud R. Noor

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

DNA molecules posses unique structure and molecular recognition properties that makes them excellent candidate for bio-chemical sensors. Understanding the mechanism of charge transport in DNA is essential to develop DNA based molecular electronic devices. In the experiment reported in this thesis, we analyzed an electrical method to detect specific DNA. Hairpin probe DNA was engineered to melt and hybridize with certain perfect complementary sequences and immobilized on a silicon chip between gold nanoelectrodes. Hybridization of target DNA to the hairpin melts or open up the stem nucleotides, which provides DNA hybridization sites. Gold nanoparticle-conjugated universal reporter sequence detects the open …

Independent Source Extraction Applied To Radar Imaging, Jeffrey Brandon Hall Jan 2009

Independent Source Extraction Applied To Radar Imaging, Jeffrey Brandon Hall

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Multiple scattering and random interactions among scattering elements and between the scatterers and the background adversely affect the radar image quality and target detection capability. In radar images formed using physical optics (PO) based techniques, multiple scattering and interactions appear as non-physical scattering centers. A method to enhance the performance of PO based radar imaging systems by extracting independent scattering centers is investigated in this thesis. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is applied to returns of a radar system to extract independent scattering elements based on their non-Gaussianity. As an example, this method of target extraction is implemented in inverse synthetic …

Insensitivity To Pain In Schizophrenia: An Examination Of Sensory And Affective Pain Processing In An Animal Model, Jessica Boyette Davis

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to display decreased sensitivity to pain, which can severely compound the impact of injuries and illnesses. Currently, the reasons for pain insensitivity in this population are unclear. Alterations in both the sensory and affective systems of pain processing have been observed, but the unique contribution of each of these systems has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to systematically investigate these two components of pain in an animal model of schizophrenia. Animals first underwent L5 spinal nerve ligation surgery in order to provoke a condition of ongoing pain responding. Following recovery …

The Effect Of Pag Stimulation Evoked Dorsal Root Reflexes In Neurogenic Inflammation, Pushpani Menaka Herath Jan 2009

The Effect Of Pag Stimulation Evoked Dorsal Root Reflexes In Neurogenic Inflammation, Pushpani Menaka Herath

Psychology Theses - Archive

Neurogenic inflammation is defined as inflammation produced by the sensory nerves. It contributes to the cardinal signs of inflammation: rubor (redness), tumor (swelling), color (heat), and dolor (pain or itch). It suggested that neurogenic inflammation is due to dorsal root reflex (DRR) and axonal reflex, which are antidromic electrical impulses of primary afferents. However, the central regulatory mechanisms of neurogenic inflammation are still unclear. It is known that electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) can induce release of GABA in the spinal cord. GABA can act on GABAA receptors on the central terminals of the primary afferents to generate …

Gender Differences In Science, Math, And Engineering Doctoral Candiates' Mental Models Regarding Intent To Pursue An Academic Career, Colette Jacquot

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Across university departments in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, there has been a long-standing problem of underrepresentation of women at all professorial ranks. Despite efforts over the past 30 years, many obstacles remain to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in STEM fields. The present study utilized Lent, Brown, and Hackett's (1996) Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to help gain a better understanding of why female doctoral students in STEM fields choose not to pursue academic jobs by examining their conceptualization or mental model of academic work. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, males and female doctoral …

The Influence Of Contingent Self-Esteem And Self-Esteem Variability On Reactions To Ostracism, Marie C. Ramirez

Psychology Theses - Archive

This study examined whether contingent self-esteem and self-esteem variability uniquely influenced reactions to social exclusion. Despite the extensive research done on ostracism and its effects on self-esteem, previous research has not explored how contingent self-esteem or self-esteem variability influence reactions to being socially excluded. A total of 122 students from the University of Texas in Arlington (UT-Arlington) took part in this study. Participants completed a global self-esteem measure and demographic information as part of the department prescreening. Next, participants completed a series of self-esteem and personality measures in an on-line study entitled "Who Am I?." Finally, each participant arrived separately, …

Human Preferences For Facial Symmetry In Dogs (Canis Familiaris), Deborah A. Mcarthur Jan 2009

Human Preferences For Facial Symmetry In Dogs (Canis Familiaris), Deborah A. Mcarthur

Psychology Theses - Archive

Previous studies on facial symmetry have documented a positive correlation between symmetry and perceived attractiveness in both human and non-human subjects. Evolutionary psychologists believe this may be evidence of a biological bias for symmetry based on the assumption that higher degrees of symmetry indicate genetic quality and a successful period of development, which is important for mate selection. The purpose of this study was to determine if this preference for symmetry would emerge if subjects were asked to assess facial attractiveness of hetero-specifics, specifically dogs, Canis familiaris. Three levels of symmetry of a frontal photograph of a dog's face were …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Flight Dynamics Of Morphing Wing Aircraft, Borna Obradovic Jan 2009

Modeling And Simulation Of The Flight Dynamics Of Morphing Wing Aircraft, Borna Obradovic

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Aircraft with variable wing geometry (morphable wings) are of considerable interest, not only for mission-specific optimization, but for enhanced maneuverability as well. In the nascent field of mini- or micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), large and rapid changes in wing geometry are achievable, resulting in significant changes of the dynamics of the vehicle. In this thesis, we present a simulation methodology suitable for such aircraft, accounting for the changes in both the aerodynamic and inertial properties. Due to the complexity of the possible wing configurations, the aerodynamics are simulated using an unsteady Vortex-Lattice approach, solved concurrently with six(+) degrees of freedom …

Propagation And Generation Of Waves In Solar Atmosphere, Swati Routh Jan 2009

Propagation And Generation Of Waves In Solar Atmosphere, Swati Routh

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The fact that the temperature increases with height in the solar atmosphere has been known for many years. To maintain this temperature increase, sources of heating must be present in the atmosphere. One of the most important, and still unsolved, problems in solar physics is to identify the basic physical processes that are responsible for this heating, and explain solar activities caused by the heating. It is also observationally well-established that the solar atmosphere shows a broad range of oscillations that are different in magnetic and non-magnetic regions of the atmosphere. The oscillations are driven by propagating waves, which cause the …

Theoretical Study Of Electronic Properties Of The Cu(001) Surface Under Conditions Of High Coverage Oxidation, Willie Burton Maddox

Physics Theses - Archive

The study of adsorption of oxygen on transition metal surface is important for the understanding of oxidation, heterogeneous catalysis, and metal corrosion. The structures formed on oxidized transition metal surfaces vary from simple adlayers of chemisorbed oxygen to more complex structures which result from the diffusion of oxygen into sub-surface regions. In this thesis, an textit{ab-initio} investigation of stability and associated physical and electronic properties of different adsorption phases of oxygen on Cu(001) as well as of the clean Cu surfaces using density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation, is presented. All surface geometries are fully optimized. Results of …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Interaction Of Detonation Wave With Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence, Hari Narayanan Nagarajan Jan 2009

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Interaction Of Detonation Wave With Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence, Hari Narayanan Nagarajan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The propagation of a shock or detonation wave through a reactive mixture has been the subject of research for over a century. The basic understanding has been shaped by one-dimensional Euler models, namely, those of Chapman-Jouguet and Zeldovich-Neumann-Doring, despite the fact that the detonation front is multidimensional. Other complications include observations of detonation instability, and spinning and galloping detonations. Recent advances in CFD have made it possible to examine detonation waves in great detail. These studies have revealed the complex nature of detonations that were observed experimentally. Some outstanding issues include the influence of inhomogeneities in the reactive mixture on …

Thermo-Mechanical Interaction Within Engineered Tissue During Freezing, Tenok Dehoyos Jan 2009

Thermo-Mechanical Interaction Within Engineered Tissue During Freezing, Tenok Dehoyos

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Cryopreservation is the preserving of biological tissues at sub zero temperature. There are many useful applications to cryopreservation such as storing donated organs till they are needed rather than letting them go to waste. When tissues are frozen and thawed, their original functionality and vitality are not usually maintained. It's been shown that when tissue is frozen its mechanical properties change, such as tensile strength and modulus. Each tissue has an extra cellular matrix made up of many collagen fibrils that is responsible for the structural integrity of the tissue. This study is to investigate the structural changes of ECM …

Long Term Durability Studies On Chemically Treated Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Materials, Vijay Krishna Ganne Jan 2009

Long Term Durability Studies On Chemically Treated Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Materials, Vijay Krishna Ganne

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is a well known construction material which has been used in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to reduce material costs and stabilizing the pavements for several years. It has been reported that out of 45 million tons of RAP produced every year in US, only 33% is being used in HMA. It is clear that a large amount of RAP produced is disposed off as a waste material in landfills. Hence, in order to utilize the maximum percentage of RAP and reduce the disposal rate, stabilized RAP can be effectively used as a base layer instead of …

The Emergence Of Pragmatic Softeners In Spanish By Instructed Learners Of Spanish In The Study Abroad And Immersion Contexts, Catharine Welch Jan 2009

The Emergence Of Pragmatic Softeners In Spanish By Instructed Learners Of Spanish In The Study Abroad And Immersion Contexts, Catharine Welch

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores and expands the term pragmatic softening as produced and perceived by L2 learners of Spanish. The learners included 36 intermediate-level learners studying in a U.S.-based immersion academy and those studying in a study-abroad context in Merida, Mexico. Preliminary evidence from these learners indicates that pragmatic softeners are rightly included in Anderson and Shirai's (1996) theory as a marginal member of the PAST category that is acquired after the more central member--the deictic past--has been acquired. Additionally, it is argued that the term pragmatic softening itself needs to be fleshed out so that it, too, is divided into …

Analysis And Simulation In Neuron And Fibrosis Models, Humberto D. Perez Gonzalez Jan 2009

Analysis And Simulation In Neuron And Fibrosis Models, Humberto D. Perez Gonzalez

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

In this work, we use analysis and numerical simulations to study the change of collective behaviorof two synaptically coupled square bursting systems, the effect of noise inan elliptic bursting system and foreign body reactions. For the square bursters we study its synchronization process as the strength ofcoupling increases. The two cells present chaotic bursting behaviorwhen there is no coupling. As the strength increases and past a certain value, the behavior of two cells, which are uncoupled, becomes synchronized regular burstingmotions. For the elliptic bursting phenomenon we study the distribution of the noise and its effects in the dynamics and the reliability of …

Testing The Equality Of Regression Coefficients And A Pooling Methodology From Multiple Samples When The Data Is Multicollinear, Fransell Riley Jan 2009

Testing The Equality Of Regression Coefficients And A Pooling Methodology From Multiple Samples When The Data Is Multicollinear, Fransell Riley

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Testing the equality of regression coefficients between two regression equations is a common practice in statistics today. The theory and methods are sufficiently developed under ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation. However, there is no method for conducting such tests when OLS estimation is not an appropriate method. For example, when multicollinearity exists in the data. Therefore, there is a need for a method to test the equality of regression coefficients when the data is multicollinear. In this research, we will present methods for conducting such a test using ridge regression coefficient estimators and principal component estimators. We will also present a …

A Globally Convergent Numerical Method For Coefficient Inverse Problems, Natee Pantong Jan 2009

A Globally Convergent Numerical Method For Coefficient Inverse Problems, Natee Pantong

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

In our terminology "globally convergent numerical method" means a numerical method, whose convergence to a good approximation for the correct solution is independent of the initial approximation. A new numerical imaging algorithm of reconstruction of optical absorption coefficients from near infrared light data with a continuous-wave has been purposed to solves a coefficient inverse problem for an elliptic equation with the data generated by the source running along a straight line. A regularization process, so-called "exterior forward problem", for preprocessing data with noise on the boundary has also been purpose for the problem related to matching fluid in experiment. A …

Theoretical And Practical Utility Of Gene Sequences In Phylogenetic And Phylogeographic Analysis, Robert Aaron Makowsky Jan 2009

Theoretical And Practical Utility Of Gene Sequences In Phylogenetic And Phylogeographic Analysis, Robert Aaron Makowsky

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Phylogenetics, or the study of evolutionary relationships among organisms, is a rapidly changing field due primarily to the dramatic increase in available molecular characters and increasingly sophisticated theoretical and computational methods. Current phylogenetic methods, though, poorly handle such large datasets due to the extremely large number of calculations required. In this dissertation, I focus on a method that can reduce datasets with a large number of molecular characters and at the same time optimize the performance of phylogenetic methods. Chapter 1 provides background information about phylogenetic methods, with a specific emphasis on Bayesian phylogenetic methods. MrBayes is the most common …

Managed Lanes Weaving And Access Guideliness, Chulsu Yang Jan 2009

Managed Lanes Weaving And Access Guideliness, Chulsu Yang

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

To maximize the potential for successful managed lanes (MLs) operations, there are critical design issues that require special attention. Adequate ML access spacing and length of the ML access opening are required for the preservation of freeway capacity, level of service, and safety. The traffic weaving from an entrance ramp to the general purpose lanes across to a ML access point and vice versa are effectively modeled as a two-sided Type C weave. The 2000 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) methodology was calibrated for the major weave without lane balance or merging (standard Type C weave) but not for the two-sided …
