The whole body tension (WBT) method was used to evaluate the hypothesis that long term treatment with NF-κB inhibitors improves the total forward pulling tension exerted by the limb musculature of the mdx mouse. Mdx mice exhibited significantly reduced WBT values and more profound weakening during the course of generating multiple forward pulling movements than age-matched nondystrophic mice. Long term treatment with the NF-κB inhibitor pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) did not significantly reduce nuclear p65 activation in the costal diaphragm, but increased WBT by 12% in mature (12 month) mice. Daily treatment (30 days) of 1 month old mdx mice with …

Selenium And Mercury Concentrations In California Gulls Breeding On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Usa, Michael R. Conover, Josh L. Vest

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

We examined selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in adult California gulls (Larus californicus) nesting on the Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA, during 2006 and 2007. During 2006, the mean Se concentration (± standard error) was 18.1 ± 1.5 μg/g in blood on a dry-weight basis and 8.1 ± 0.4 μg/g in liver. During 2007, Se concentrations were 15.7 ± 1.5 μg/g in blood and 8.3 ± 0.4 μg/g in liver; Hg concentrations were 2.4 ± 0.3 μg/g in blood and 4.1 ± 0.5 μg/g in liver. Gulls collected from a freshwater colony located within the watershed of the Great …

Do Sharp-Tailed Grouse Select Loafing Sites To Avoid Visual Or Olfactory Predators?, Michael R. Conover, Jennifer S. Borgo

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Grouse should seek loafing sites hidden from predators; however, good hiding sites from predators that use vision to locate prey differ from good hiding sites from predators that use odor to locate prey. We compared characteristics of control sites to sites used for loafing by sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) to determine whether selection of loafing sites was more influenced by the need to hide from visual or olfactory predators. Sites used for loafing were similar to control sites in characteristics that would help hide a grouse from visual predators (i.e., visual obstruction, lateral visibility, visual obstruction, cover ht, and surface …

How Cross-Modality Effects During Intraspecific Interactions Of Jumping Spiders Differ Depending On Whether A Female-Choice Or Mutual-Choice Mating System Is Adopted, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson Feb 2009

How Cross-Modality Effects During Intraspecific Interactions Of Jumping Spiders Differ Depending On Whether A Female-Choice Or Mutual-Choice Mating System Is Adopted, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An important prediction from game theory is that the value of a resource influences the level to which conflict escalates. Here we use jumping spiders (Salticidae) to consider this prediction in the context of species adopting different mating systems ('female mate-choice' and 'mutual mate-choice'). Our experiments are designed for determining whether the odour of conspecific females, more than the odour of heterospecific females, primes males to escalate conflict with a potential same-sex rival and also whether the odour of conspecific males, more than the odour of heterospecific males, primes females to escalate conflict with a potential same-sex rival. Four species …

Parasitoids Associated With Mussidia Spp. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) In Kenya, Benjamin Kimwele Muli, Fritz Schulthess, Johnnie Van Den Berg

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The pyralid Mussidia nigrivenella, a pest of cotton, maize and Phaseolus bean in West Africa, has never been reported as a crop pest in East and Southern Africa, although reportedly it exists in the wild. It is hypothesized that the difference in pest status of M. nigrivenella between western and eastern Africa was either due to differences in natural enemy compositions or that there exist several populations and/or species of Mussidia, which vary in their host plant range. Thus, a catalogue of parasitoids of Mussidia spp. was established through surveys in mid-altitude and coastal Kenya, between 2006 and 2007. Mussidia …

Impression Management In Televised Debates: The Effect Of Background Nonverbal Behavior On Audience Perceptions Of Debaters’ Likeability, John S. Seiter, Harry Weger Jr., Harold J. Kinzer, Andrea Sandry Jensen Jan 2009

Impression Management In Televised Debates: The Effect Of Background Nonverbal Behavior On Audience Perceptions Of Debaters’ Likeability, John S. Seiter, Harry Weger Jr., Harold J. Kinzer, Andrea Sandry Jensen

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined whether a debater's background nonverbal behavior affected audience perceptions of her and her opponent's likeability. Students watched one of four versions of a televised debate. In each, while the speaking debater appeared on the main screen, subscreens displayed her opponent's background nonverbal behavior. In one version, the nonspeaking debater displayed a neutral expression, whereas in the others she displayed occasional disagreement, nearly constant disagreement, or both agreement and disagreement. After viewing the debates, students rated the debaters' likeability. Analysis indicated that background behavior influenced perceptions of the nonverbal communicator but not of the speaking debater.

Nurse Anesthetists' Perception Of Their Rigorous Training Program A Grounded Theory Study, Joy Kieffer Phillips Jan 2009

Nurse Anesthetists' Perception Of Their Rigorous Training Program A Grounded Theory Study, Joy Kieffer Phillips

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

There is no empirical understanding of the stressors that nurse anesthesia students encounter from their perspective as they negotiate a nurse anesthesia program. The initial research questions for this study examined what stressors these recent graduates encountered during their program and how they successfully negotiated those stressors. This study employed grounded theory methodology and the theory of symbolic interactionism. The data were collected from individual, semistructured, indepth interviews with 12 recent nurse anesthesia graduates who have been out of school for less than 2 years. The interview transcripts were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The stressors discovered were …

Improving The Odds Of Government Accountability In The Disaster-Prone Era: Using The 9/11 Fund Factors To Remedy The Problem Of Toxic Katrina Trailers, Olympia Duhart

Faculty Scholarship

Olympia Duhart, Improving the Odds of Government Accountability in the Disaster-Prone Era: Using the 9/11 Fund Factors to Remedy the Problem of Toxic Katrina Trailers, 24 Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law 2 (2009). This article analyzes the dangers surrounding the toxicity levels in the trailers issued to Katrina survivors by FEMA, and identifies serious medical complications stemming from the temporary homes. Lack of government oversight in the process led to the distribution of formaldehyde-laced trailers that cost the government more than $2 billion and continue to poison residents years after the storm. Furthermore, the failures connected to …
