A Framework For Robust Detection And Prevention Of Wide-Spread Node Compromise In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jun-Won Ho
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Wireless sensor networks are known to be vulnerable to a variety ofattacks that could undermine normal sensor network operations. Manyschemes have been developed to defend the wireless sensor networksagainst various attacks. Most of them focus on making the networkand service protocols be attack-resilient rather than rooting outthe source of attacks. Although the attack-resiliency approachmitigates the threats on sensor network protocols, it requiressubstantial time and effort for continuously enhancing therobustness of the protocols in line with the emergence of newtypes of attacks. Accordingly, if we are able to detect and removethe sources of attacks as soon as possible, we could save …

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Devices in pervasive systems are generally resource constrained, heterogeneous, personal, and mobile. These constraints limit the services and quality of service offered by the devices. For example, execution of such tasks as video and audio processing might not be possible or successful on cell phones, PDAs and sensors. Hence interactions between devices are exploited to perform collaborative task execution. Devices with better resource levels perform tasks on behalf of other devices. This dissertation provides algorithms for cooperative service executions in pervasive environments. The major contributions of this dissertation are: (1) Cluster Based Scheduling (CBS) algorithm that performs service scheduling in …
The Androgyne Patriarchy In Japan: Contemporary Issues In Japanese Gender, Rachel Ann Snyder
The Androgyne Patriarchy In Japan: Contemporary Issues In Japanese Gender, Rachel Ann Snyder
English Theses - Archive
This project seeks to identify recent trends in Japanese masculinity, particularly the inclusion of androgyny as a mode included in masculinity. The salary man is perhaps the best-known model of masculinity in Japan identifiable to the West; but recently, Japan has seen some interesting developments in acceptable forms of performable masculinity. In the first chapter of this thesis especially I deal with a historical analysis of three different historical models of Japanese inclusive masculinity. The second chapter looks at the contemporary counterpart to the mobo, the hikikomori, or shut in through an analysis of the writings of Haruki Murakami. The …

The Currency Of Love: The Merging Of Monetary And Amorous Concerns In The Merchant Of Venice And Timon Of Athens, Pamela Kay Rollins
English Theses - Archive
I argue that Timon of Athens and The Merchant of Venice illustrate that money and love can exist within the same exchange system, within which each relationship retains a value based upon an expectation of reciprocity. The terms of reciprocity found in the relationships of these plays is often intertwined through the means of gift exchange and bonds. The exchange of gifts, when involved in the evaluation of a relationship, questions the very nature of an altruistic gift and illustrates further the means by which affection influences monetary exchanges. Furthermore, the quantitative and qualitative exchanges in Merchant and Timon depict …

Investigating The Optical Signals In The Brain And Spinal Cord During Nociception, Ji Wei He
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Neuroimaging technologies have been widely used to study brain functioning based on a tight correlation between neurons and neighboring vasculature during neural activation, called neurovascular coupling. However, many studies suggested some degree of uncoupling. Optical techniques are unique tools to directly measure tissue oxygen dynamics and other physiological parameters to reflect local metabolism. The objective of my dissertation was to seek for biomarkers of pain in the brain and spinal cord. Two distinct optical methods were used in an in vivo rat model, including a diffuse optical imager to monitor the whole brain-scaled hemodynamics and a fiber optic system to …

The Pursuit Of Language Appropriate Care: Remote Simultaneous Medical Interpretation Use, Debra M. Logan
Nursing Dissertations - Archive
Background. The U.S. government mandates nurses to deliver linguistically appropriate care to hospital patients. It is difficult for nurses to implement the language mandates because there are 6,912 active living languages spoken in the world. Language barriers appear to place limited English proficient (LEP) patients at increased risk for harm when compared to non-LEP patients. Hospitals, a primary nurse employer, are responsible for supplying language services to support accessible, quality care to linguistically diverse populations. This descriptive study explored relationships among the use of remote simultaneous medical interpretation (RSMI) in hospital settings, hospital size as an indicator of organizational resources …

Solution To Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations By Using Finite Element Method, Wanchai Jiajan
Solution To Incompressible Navier Stokes Equations By Using Finite Element Method, Wanchai Jiajan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The finite element method has become a popular method for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. High Reynolds number cases require fine meshes so computational efficiency becomes an important factor in algorithm and code development. In this work, a Galerkin finite element method is proposed to solve the two dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. This approach typically leads to a sparse and indefinite matrix that is difficult to solve efficiently. The formation of an indefinite matrix is avoided in the present work by introducing an artificial compressibility term in the continuity equation. The concept of this method is to transform …

Effects Of Curvature On The Stresses Of A Curved Laminated Beams Subjected To Bending, Thien Nguyen
Effects Of Curvature On The Stresses Of A Curved Laminated Beams Subjected To Bending, Thien Nguyen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
In aircraft structural applications, curved laminated beam structures are often used as part of the internal structure. If the curved composite structure is subjected to bending that tends to flatten or compress the composite structure, interlaminar stresses can be generated in the thickness direction of the composites. These interlaminar stresses are the major factor of delamination failure. Besides these stresses, the in-plane stresses can be also affected by the pre-existence of the beam curvature. This research has studied the variation of both tangential and radial stresses with respect to the changing in curvature, stacking sequence, and fiber orientation in a …

Expanding Beyond The Foundations Of Decision-Making: Perceptual Differences Of Risk Between Resources, Patrick A. Ramirez
Psychology Theses - Archive
This research examined how resources such as life, food, and money are calculated in decision-making. Presently, the field assumes that various types of resources have the same value when a choice is being made. The study tested the assumption by comparing how individuals responded to two similar sunk cost scenarios (investing in a failing venture) where one task situation dealt with money and the other situation concerned life decisions. There were three hypotheses tested in this experiment. The first hypothesis predicted that participants would make more investments for an ill pet when compared with a failing business, which was confirmed. …

The Impact Of Familial Instability On Adolescent Behavioral Outcomes, Stephen N. Baldridge
The Impact Of Familial Instability On Adolescent Behavioral Outcomes, Stephen N. Baldridge
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
As the definition of what is considered a family changes in our society, the family unit itself continues to undergo changes. These changes can sometimes lead to decreased stability within the family unit. This study focused on how this instability impacts adolescents who are brought up in unstable families, specifically within the context of their behavioral outcomes. Variables surrounding family stability as well as several indicators of maladaptive behavioral outcomes were used to measure this concept. This study used a longitudinal, non-experimental approach, guided by a comprehensive literature review and the theoretical application to Skinner's theory of applied behavior.
