Small-strain soil stiffness properties such as shear modulus, shear wave velocity, and material damping, are key subsoil parameters for an adequate analysis and design of unsaturated earth structures subject to static and non-static loading. Most conventional geotechnical testing techniques, however, are not able to capture this small-strain behavior and, hence, enormously underestimate the true soil stiffness, primarily due to inaccuracies in small-strain measurements. Around the world, a great deal of research efforts has been dedicated to field and laboratory based measurements of soil suction, assessments of soil-water retention properties, and analyses of swell-collapse behavior. However, very few efforts have been …

Pathological conditions like coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral artery diseases as well as cardiovascular interventions used in the treatment of coronary artery diseases such as angioplasty and stenting, damage/injure the blood vessel wall, leading to inflamed or activated endothelial cells that have been implicated in events leading to thrombosis, inflammation, and restenosis. Oral administration of anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory drugs causes systemic toxicity, bleeding, patient incompliance, and inadequate amounts of drugs at the injured area. Though drug-eluting stents have shown therapeutic benefits, complications such as in-stent restenosis and late thrombosis still remain and are a cause for …
Development Of Orchestrated Stem Cell-Based Regeneration (Oscer) -Strategies To Recruit And Differentiate Autologous Stem Cells For Tissue Regeneration, Ashwin Nair
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Stem cell therapy has shown great promise in curing diseases. However, clinical application of stem cell therapy is often hindered by the lack of reliable sources and convenient methods to recover stem cells. Our laboratory has recently discovered that adult stem cells can be actively recruited via inflammatory chemokines/growth factor. My research was aimed towards the development of a new technology - "Orchestrated Stem Cell-based Regeneration" or OSCeR - to induce stem cell-mediated tissue regeneration by blending stem cell therapy and tissue engineering technology. This work has led to a series of interesting findings as listed below. Shortly after implantation, …

Real Time Location Tool For Precision Tracking Of Passive Uhf Rfid Tags In Two Dimensions, Nasir Kenarangui
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis addresses this problem of a precise RTLS (Real Time Location System) by implementing a Passive UHF RFID system. A software is created that connects to an RFID reader and accesses it's functionality to collect the tag's backscatter power which is the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator), and the tag's ID. The software also connects with a web camera, and locates the tags within the camera's point of view by using only the RSSI of the tag. This software is capable of computing the locations of tags by locking on each tag's unique EPC, and marking their location and …

However, the charging infrastructures/station become key factor in the success of prevail of PHEVs.The research of this paper is focusing the operation of the PHEV charging station with battery storage units. The battery units conserve the low price clean energy and discharge when demanded. The on-site installed photovoltaic (PV) and off-site …
Predition Of Torque And Radial Forces In Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Using Field Reconstruction Method, Banharn Sutthiphornsombat
Predition Of Torque And Radial Forces In Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Using Field Reconstruction Method, Banharn Sutthiphornsombat
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Due to their high torque-to-loss ratio, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) have received increasing attention in automotive applications over the past decade. Because of this unique characteristics, many applications have utilized PMSM. In addition to high efficiency, quiet operation of the machines is desirable in automotive, naval and military applications. In order to operate at high efficiency quietly, the torque pulsation or torque ripple needs to be monitored and mitigated accurately. Magnitude of the torque ripple is influenced by the magnetic design (cogging torque) and excitation, and the pattern of ripple is affected by the machine's geometry (stator slots).Field reconstruction …

This study compares Arturo Islas's novel, The Rain God: A Desert Tale with Cynthia Ozick's novella, "Envy; or Yiddish in America." Specifically, I argue that during the 1970s, these authors fictionalized the discourse concerning trans-generational cultural inheritance anxiety. Islas and Ozick shared an anxiety about the future of their individual ethnic culture in America because the children born in America were moving away from the ethnic culture they inherited from their parents. Ozick and Islas's fictions question whether accepting a new American identity, as many ofthe youth in their stories do, may severely impact the continuation of their ethnic culture. …
Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta
Convert Uhf Rfid Tag From Passive To Semi-Passive Tag Using External Power Sources, Tanvi Mehta
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
In this thesis, I present novel circuit designs that convert a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag into a semi-passive RFID tag. Passive RFID tags are relatively inexpensive to purchase and to integrate into objects and devices. However, in some environments and on some objects the performance of the pure passive tags is not sufficient for the intended applications. A semi-passive tag, in comparison to a pure passive tag, has significantly greater communication range since the semi-passive tag derives its operational power from an on-tag power source instead of just from an interrogator's communication signal. As a result, semi-passive tags …

Also we have shown the transmission chain for downlink and uplink showing step by step that how the data and control information are transmitted over air in LTE. We have presented a brief overview of …
Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa
Optimal Output Gain Algorithm For Feed-Forward Network Training, Babu Hemanth Kumar Aswathappa
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A batch training algorithm for feed-forward networks is proposed which uses Newton's method to estimate a vector of optimal scaling factors for output errors in the network. Using this vector, backpropagation is used to modify weights feeding into the hidden units. Linear equations are then solved for the network's output weights. Elements of the new method's Gauss-Newton Hessian matrix are shown to be weighted sums of elements from the total network's Hessian. The effect of output transformation on training a feed-forward network is reviewed and explained, using the concept of equivalent networks. In several examples, the new method performs better …
An Ecocritical Exploration Of The Unique Nature Of Early Modern Oceans In The Blazing World And The Tempest, Marykathryn Earnest
An Ecocritical Exploration Of The Unique Nature Of Early Modern Oceans In The Blazing World And The Tempest, Marykathryn Earnest
English Theses - Archive
Early modern perceptions of oceanic space diverged from standard perceptions of nature on land (or land-nature) because oceans presented a different type of wilderness. Because oceans defied early modern definitions of nature, they refused to support the developing mechanistic approach in the way that land-nature did. My argument begins with a chapter exploring science and nature in the early modern period. My second chapter expands this demonstration with an exploration of The Tempest. Shakespeare's self-reflexivity and exploration of boundaries in representing islands and oceans exemplifies their liminal position within nature. In my final chapter, I examine Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing …
Children Of Israel: Jacob Figures And Themes In The Novels Of Chaim Potok, Alan Morris Cochrum
Children Of Israel: Jacob Figures And Themes In The Novels Of Chaim Potok, Alan Morris Cochrum
English Theses - Archive
The twentieth-century novelist Chaim Potok made central to his fiction what he called “culture war,” juxtaposing his Jewish-American characters' inner spiritual lives with key elements of Western secularism. In five of his novels -The Promise (1969), My Name Is Asher Lev (1972), The Book of Lights (1981), Davita's Harp (1985), and The Gift of Asher Lev (1990) - the protagonist comes under the influence of a character who can be styled “the Jacob figure.” This thesis argues that these characters not only echo various aspects of the biblical narratives about the Hebrew patriarch, thereby turning him into a meta-character in …

It is shown that optimal flat networks can be found as solutions to least squares problems. An algorithm is presented to improve existing classifier training methods by changing the desired outputs. The algorithm is based on minimum probability of error. The algorithm's performance is compared with those of other algorithms including the Bayes Gaussian classifier. The Convergence of training and the effects of outliers are analyzed in all the algorithms presented here.
Japan In The Mirror Of Language: The Failure Of Language To Represent Objects In Travel Narratives On Japan, Andrew Tyner
Japan In The Mirror Of Language: The Failure Of Language To Represent Objects In Travel Narratives On Japan, Andrew Tyner
English Theses - Archive
The travel narrative is, ostensibly, little more than representation of foreign places and things, foreign objects. The language of the travel narrative seems, on the surface, to succeed in representing the foreign. None the less, theory abounds which holds that language is fundamentally unable to represent objects, at least in a pure sense. Taking Japanese travel narratives as a particular example, this thesis attempts to demonstrate that the language of these narratives fails to successfully and fully represent objects as they exist, or have existed, in the world. I work between what I take as two extreme theories of language, …

Biography As A Searchlight: Finding The Frank Stanford Story Cycle In Ellen Gilchrist's Fiction, Alyson Ward
English Theses - Archive
Ellen Gilchrist's short stories and novels form several story cycles that connect her characters and tie her work together into interdependent story groups. Her work is also strikingly autobiographical, featuring protagonists who resemble her in obvious ways. Though critics have identified many of Gilchrist's story cycles, one important cycle has been all but ignored: a young poet appears in a number of her stories, and for several of Gilchrist's protagonists, he serves as a catalyst for needed change. The poet is a fictional representation of the poet Frank Stanford, who died in 1978 but played the same life-changing role for …

H.264 Standard Based Side Information Generation In Wyner-Ziv Coding, Subrahmanya Maira Venkatrav
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The traditional video coding involves a high complexity encoder and relatively low complexity decoder. The complexity of the encoder is mainly due to motion estimation [3] and other prediction techniques employed . There is a new paradigm emerging in video coding - Distributed video coding (DVC). This is based on Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv6 theorems. In Wyner-Ziv video coding, encoder is less complex compared to the decoder. The decoder is very complex due to prediction involved for side information (SI) generation. There is lot of research done previously on linear density parity check codes (LDPC) and H.263 standard based SI generation …

Capacitive Strain Sensors For Measurement Of Large Strain For Structural Health Monitoring, Clement Jacob
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Structural health monitoring (SHM) is increasingly used to replace time based management, with a more efficient Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). The traditional scheme of scheduling down time for aircraft inspection or periodic evaluation of civil infrastructure costs millions of dollars in maintenance due to either downtime or lack of timely maintenance. SHM involves periodic, real time sampling and analysis of signals, from onboard sensors like accelerometer, pressure, strain or acoustic sensors to determine the condition of the structure. This can be used to carry out immediate repairs as well as predict failure. We report the development of a new high …

The energy demand on the world market due to the limited resources has forced governments and scientists to find an alternative source of fuel to ease the burden on its populous and environment. Moreover, the rate of global warming is increasing with the rate of carbon dioxide released from emissions from coal burning power plants and also from vehicle exhaust. This trend of burn now and fix later has to end and a new source of fuel must be developed. Wind, solar, and even nuclear are great substitutes for reducing the global pollution but a new tangible fuel is required. …

Detection And Severity Classification Of Rotor Imbalance Faults In Induction Machines, Himanshu Jain
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
As world economy continues to globalize, increased competition has lead to a reduction in profit margins. To remain competitive in such an economy, an industry needs to reduce the downtime of critical components even for maintenance purposes. However, this should not jeopardize the genuine maintenance needs of the equipments. In other words, an optimized maintenance strategy is needed, in which maintenance is performed only when a need for it arises; unlike the currently popular periodic maintenance. Condition based Maintenance (CBM) is one such strategy. Induction machines are work horse of an industry. Their criticality to industry may be gauged by …

Low Complexity H.264 To Vc-1 Transcoder, Vidhya Vijayakumar
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The high definition video adoption has been growing rapidly for the last five years. The H.264 and VC-1 coding standards are two of the recent and dominant coding standards. Compared to H.264, VC-1 is less complex but capable of achieving the same visual quality as H.264. Hence there is increasing importance of techniques which can convert video from H.264 to VC-1 and thereby enable mobile devices to work with less complex codecs. While there has been recent work on VC-1 to H.264 transcoding, the published work on H.264 to VC-1 transcoding is nearly non-existent. This has created the motivation to …

A Comparison Method To Evaluate Motion Splicing Techniques, George Thekkanath Raphael
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The development of methods for the re-use and modification of motion data is an activearea of research. Among these methods, we find automatic techniques to generate a spliced motion by combining different actions recorded in separate sessions. Motion splicing allows capturing motion independently and later combining them to create a new natural looking motion. Even though there have been a lot of research on motion editing techniques, less focus has been given to evaluate these edited motions. In this thesis, we present a novel methodology to quantitatively evaluate the synthesized motion generated by different motion editing techniques. We implemented three …

Web based access to databases have become a popular method of datadelivery. A multitude of websites provides access to their proprietary datathrough web forms. In order to view this data, customers use the web forminterface and pose queries on the underlying database. These queries areexecuted and a resulting set of tuples (usually the top-k ones) is served to thecustomer. Top-k along with strict limits on querying are constraints used by thedatabase providers to conserve the power of the underlying data distribution.Delivering limited access only to tuples that satisfy a query enables providers toexpose only a small snippet of the entire …
