Reclassifying Papillary, Oncocytic And Chromophobe Renal Tumours Based On The 5th Who Classification 2022, Nilofar Shaikh, Mary Mathew
Open Access archive
Objective: The classification of renal tumors is expanding with the addition of new molecular entities in the 5th World Health Organization classification. Apart from this, the major updates in the definition of papillary renal cell carcinoma are that these tumors are no longer subtyped into type 1 and type 2. In oncocytic tumors, the new molecularly defined renal tumors, emerging and novel entities need to be considered in the diagnosis of oncocytic and chromophobe renal tumors. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective study to review and reclassify papillary, oncocytic, and chromophobe renal tumors based on the new WHO classification …

During the multistage process of cancer spread, fragments of cells branch out from the primitive tumor tissue and scatter throughout the body by blood flow stream or lymph, which are termed as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), regarded as an important biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) is one of the most efficient passive type particle isolation techniques which functions on asymmetrical laminar flow diversion around the placed microposts forming an array, based on the critical dimeter of the device. In this simulation study, complete trajectory analysis of CTCs and WBCs has been performed using COMSOL Multiphysics software …

This paper presents a risk-based dynamic pricing strategy for the microgrid based electric vehicle charging station. The microgrid is composed of renewable resources such as solar energy, wind energy and fuel cells. The proposed microgrid-based charging station operates off-grid and on-grid depending on the charging demand and trades the electricity with the main grid when needed. In this work, to increase the reliability and to decrease the detrimental impact of electric vehicle load on the distribution network electric vehicles act as a source of flexibility through grid to vehicle and vehicle to grid provisions. The uncertainty of solar and wind …

Improving Prediction Of Solar Material Properties Through Software Engineering, Ryn Y. Oliphant, Eric Jankowski
2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase
It is possible to inexpensively generate electrical power from the sun with panels made from carbon-based molecules. The challenge is in finding the organic molecules that are both easy to make and efficient at catching light and converting it into power. It is therefore important to understand how charges move through these molecular systems, and we use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate these processes. Because the scientific software for performing kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of charge transport in organic materials is relatively new, there are open challenges with improving software performance, correctness, and generalizability. In this work, we focus …

This project uses the biotechnology of rumen-native Microbial Feed Supplements (M.F.S.) to decrease enteric methane emissions (E.M.E.) and analyze the use of this Climate Safe Agriculture (C.S.A.) tool. We aim to look at the impacts of usage on an environmental, economic, and social level. Dairy cattle contribute significantly to the amount of methane released into the atmosphere and current tactics to work on the effects are not long-term nor cost efficient solutions. This climate-smart solution aims to mitigate E.M.E. and develop an understanding for dairy industries and how they operate. This M.F.S. will be implemented and analyzed to determine its …
Is Manual Lateralization Associated With Manual Performance?, Kylie Llamas, Iryna Babik
Is Manual Lateralization Associated With Manual Performance?, Kylie Llamas, Iryna Babik
2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Manual lateralization, or hand preference, emerges in infancy and gets manifested in object acquisition and manipulation. The magnitude of manual lateralization refers to the strength of hand preference, irrespective of its direction (right vs. left). Manual lateralization has evolved as a useful adaptation, but does it improve manual performance? Previous research showed inconsistent results on the relation between manual lateralization and manual performance. This may have been due to differences in measures of hand preference, with some research looking at the direction rather than magnitude of manual lateralization. The aim of this research was to determine whether the magnitude of …
Assessing Etco2 Levels Exhibited In Nose Deformation, Giada Brandes, Andrew Bossert, Holly Olvera, Erin Mannen
Assessing Etco2 Levels Exhibited In Nose Deformation, Giada Brandes, Andrew Bossert, Holly Olvera, Erin Mannen
2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase
The nose is a primary system for respiration, acting as airway filtration and thermal regulation. Obstructed breathing during sleep creates a challenge for nasal respiration during the night, affecting nearly 24% of the population between ages 30 to 60 years old. Neonates and infants have underdeveloped nasal cavities which cause higher nasal resistance resulting in less airflow. EtCO2 levels were measured from six participants in four explicit nose deformations, defined as right ala closed, left ala closed, the tip of the nose pushed upwards, and the tip of the nose pressed downwards. Peak force was also recorded in Newtons …

A polycrystalline nanostructured thin film of zinc cadmium sulfide was meticulously fabricated on a glass substrate using the thermal evaporation method physical vapor deposition within a vacuum chamber. Different doping concentrations were introduced by varying the cadmium (Cd) content, resulting in Zn1-xCdxS films with Cd concentrations ranging from x = 0.00-0.20 wt %. The impact of Cd doping on the third-order nonlinear optical (TONLO) properties of these films was thoroughly studied using the Z-scan method, employing a diode-pumped solid-state continuous-wave laser. To gain insight into the structural characteristics, the Zn1-xCdxS thin films underwent analysis through x-ray diffraction. Optical studies confirmed …

Chronic inflammation increases the risk of developing multiple chronic diseases, including cancer. The risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) specifically is increased in individuals who suffer from colitis, a characteristic of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Diet is another risk factor for developing CRC, particularly an inflammation-promoting Western-type diet. Thus, supplementing a Western diet with functional foods containing anti-inflammatory polyphenols is a potential approach to decreasing CRC risk by reducing gut inflammation and altering gut microbiome profile. This study aimed to determine the effects of cocoa polyphenol (CP) supplementation on inflammation status and microbiome profile before, during, and after colitis when …

Polyploidy is common among plants and can contribute to physiological and morphological differences, altering how plants respond to environmental changes, promoting genetic diversification, and even species radiation. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a keystone species associated with high plant and animal diversity is frequently found in mixed diploid/triploid populations in the Intermountain West. High mortality rates and widespread population declines in aspen are of increasing concern in the Intermountain West, often ascribed to changing climates and drought stress events. The goal of this study was to better understand environmental factors influencing the distribution of triploid aspen population in the Intermountain West. …
