A Hierarchical Network Management Strategy For Distributed Ciiot With Imperfect Csi, Fan Yang, Shilong Zhang, Chunnian Liu, Jie Huang, Tao Yu, Keping Yu, Mohsen Guizani

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

In the distributed Cognitive Industrial Internet of Things (CIIoT), since industrial devices may self-organize to determine their connection and dispersion and the network may be distributed with no infrastructure, network management with self-organizing characteristics is still an unsolved and a difficult problem. To overcome this challenge, this article proposes a hierarchical network management strategy for distributed CIIoT with imperfect channel state information (CSI) considering services with different transmission delay requirements. First, we build a two-layer architecture that supports collaborative spectrum sensing and multinode spectrum sharing in a distributed CIIoT. Then, to improve the network management efficiency and reduce the number …

Tokengreen: A Versatile Nft Framework For Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading And Asset Ownership Of Electric Vehicles, Madhusudan Naik, Akhilendra Pratap Singh, Nihar Ranjan Pradhan, Neeraj Kumar, Amiya Nayak, Mohsen Guizani

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The rapid increase in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the installation of charging stations (CSs) are key components for bidirectional energy transfer between EVs and CSs. However, the traditional techniques of energy trading have issues of trust, scalability, traceability, provenance, and authenticity among energy prosumers. To address these challenges, particularly information imbalances between energy buyers and sellers, we propose TokenGreen, a novel framework that leverages blockchain and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to enable participants to have ownership of energy assets through investments in distributed energy generation, distribution, and clean energy infrastructure, leading to trust and transparency management among the …

Welcoming The Stranger: Abrahamic Hospitality And Its Contemporary Implications, Ori Z. Soltes, Rachel Stern, Endy Moraes

Religion

Embracing hospitality and inclusion in Abrahamic traditions

One of the signal moments in the narrative of the biblical Abraham is his insistent and enthusiastic reception of three strangers, a starting point of inspiration for all three Abrahamic traditions as they evolve and develop the details of their respective teachings. On the one hand, welcoming the stranger by remembering “that you were strangers in the land of Egypt” is enjoined upon the ancient Israelites, and on the other, oppressing the stranger is condemned by their prophets throughout the Hebrew Bible.

These sentiments are repeated in the New Testament and the Qur’an …

Stochastic Gradient Descent With Preconditioned Polyak Step-Size, F. Abdukhakimov, C. Xiang, D. Kamzolov, M. Takáč

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Abstract: Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) is one of the many iterative optimization methods that are widely used in solving machine learning problems. These methods display valuable properties and attract researchers and industrial machine learning engineers with their simplicity. However, one of the weaknesses of this type of methods is the necessity to tune learning rate (step-size) for every loss function and dataset combination to solve an optimization problem and get an efficient performance in a given time budget. Stochastic Gradient Descent with Polyak Step-size (SPS) is a method that offers an update rule that alleviates the need of fine-tuning the …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The pressing need for sustainable development solutions necessitates innovative data-driven tools. Machine learning (ML) offers significant potential, but faces challenges in centralized approaches, particularly concerning data privacy and resource constraints in geographically dispersed settings. Federated learning (FL) emerges as a transformative paradigm for sustainable development by decentralizing ML training to edge devices. However, communication bottlenecks hinder its scalability and sustainability. This paper introduces an innovative FL framework that enhances communication efficiency. The proposed framework addresses the communication bottleneck by harnessing the power of the Lemurs optimizer (LO), a nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm. Inspired by the cooperative foraging behavior of lemurs, the …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Being a novel network architecture, the Space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) offers advantages such as extensive network coverage and seamless ubiquitous access. However, it also encounters the challenge of balancing a growing user demand with limited network service resources. In order to further improve the utilization rate of network resources, a group of virtual network functions can be connected according to certain business logic to form a dynamic reconfigurable service function chain. This can provide diversified and high-quality network services for users. So by aggregating the same type of network function, we can reduce the cost of service chain mapping. Based …

Softwarized Resource Allocation Of Tailored Services With Zero Security Trust In 6g Networks, Haotong Cao, Longxiang Yang, Sahil Garg, Mubarak Alrashoud, Mohsen Guizani

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Comparing with previous five generation networks consisting of dedicated appliance, 6G network appliances are designed to be softwarized and isolated into software (resource and function) blocks and general-purpose hardware. Tailored services, having customized resources and function demands, can be executed by chained software blocks and co-exist in the underlying 6G general-purpose hardware. However, physical hardware is vulnerable to a wide range of security threats and attacks. When attacked, this can result in devastation and failure of tailored services. Furthermore, the quality of a tailored service will be greatly degraded. Recently, zero security trust emerges and is accepted as one contemporary …

A Consistent Transversely-Isotropic Hyper-Viscoelastic Model: Finite Element Implementation And Mechanical Characterization Of Biological Tissues, Manu Hegde, K. Karthik, Vishwanath Managuli, Subraya Krishna Bhat

Open Access archive

Soft tissues like skeletal muscles, ligaments and tendons exhibit transversely-isotropic hyper-viscoelastic (VE) behavior. Simulating the mechanical response of such soft tissues under various types of loading scenario requires accurate constitutive models. Several models have been proposed towards this goal. Although these models successfully capture the deformations under different kinds of loadings, they offer limited description of the shear behaviour. The reason for this discrepancy is found to be the absence of few of the required strain invariants corresponding to the transversely-isotropic VE solids. We attempt in this work to develop a transversely-isotropic VE model that is capable of capturing the …

As sea levels continue to rise, practitioners at the local and regional scale are under increased pressure to reduce risks to people and property posed by the threats of sea-level rise (SLR) and associated impacts. To achieve this, a transdisciplinary approach that integrates data-driven research with local knowledge and community engagement is necessary. As such, it is imperative the science community understands the needs of practitioners. However, there has been little qualitative assessment of adaptation practice in coastal areas, especially with a focus on the needs of practitioners in making use of current SLR science. Our mixed-methods approach began with …
