In East African small-holder farming of maize, the cattle forage legume, Desmodium uncinatum is used as an intercrop due to its allelopathic inhibition of parasitism by Striga hermonthica, an obligate parasitic weed that can devastate the maize crop. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the root extract of D. uncinatum revealed isoschaftoside to be the main compound in the most potent fraction inhibiting growth of germinated S. hermonthica radicles. Bioassays repeated with isoschaftoside isolated from a different plant source, Passiflora incarnata, proved it to be a biologically active component. Analysis of the root exudates produced by hydroponically grown D. uncinatum showed isoschaftoside to …

Novel Cross-Stage Solitarising Effect Of Gregarious-Phase Adult Desert Locust (Schistocerca Gregaria (Forskål)) Pheromone On Hoppers, Magzoub O. Bashir, Ahmed Hassanali
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Previous studies had demonstrated stage differentiation in the cohesion (aggregation) pheromone systems of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. In laboratory arena, the nymphal and adult stages responded aggregatively to their own pheromone, but dispersed evenly within the arena in the presence of the other. In the present study, we explored the effects of longer-term contact of field gregarious hopper bands and laboratory crowd-reared nymphs with the major constituent of the adult pheromone. During the first few days, hoppers in treated bands became relatively hyperactive. Over the next few days, their movements became random and they stopped marching as coherent groups, …

Maize is becoming the major food crop around Lake Victoria. Major constraints to its production are Striga, stem borer, and declining soil fertility. Innovative integrated technologies have been developed: the 'push-pull' system (intercropping with Desmodium and surrounded by Napier grass), soybean and Crotalaria rotations, and imidazolinone-resistant (IR) maize seed. In 12 demonstration trials in four villages in Siaya and Vihiga districts (Kenya) and two villages in Busia (Uganda) in 2003 and 2004, 504 farmers evaluated all cropping systems and a mono-cropped continuous maize, each cropped with IR or local maize, and supplemented or not with fertilizer, totaling 16 treatments. Farmers …

Economic Redevelopment Options Study For The Oakcrest Area, City Of Kennedale, Christopher Bobbitt, Mike Foreman, Renatta Lindsey, Jean Petr
Public Administration Capstone Reports - Archive
The City of Kennedale has entered into a binding agreement with four sexually oriented businesses located in the Oakcrest Area. In 2012 this agreement will require the sexually oriented businesses to close down and move out of Kennedale. The remarkable question that the City of Kennedale has asked is how and by what means these sites should be redeveloped. The purpose of this project was to research and analyze potential economic development options that could revitalize the four sites where the existing sexually oriented businesses are located and spur economic development in the entire Oakcrest Area.

The Gap Between The Rich And Poor, Kristina Brandt
The Gap Between The Rich And Poor, Kristina Brandt
Perspectives
Social problems are hard to define as they vary through time and place. A social problem may be defined as something that hurts society or people in that society. One main factor that constitutes a social problem is a condition that causes psychic or material suffering for a category of people. In the United States economical inequality seems to be that ever growing condition. The gap between the rich and the poor, and the societal institutions contributing to that gap, is the biggest social problem that Americans face.
The Effects Of Norms And Self-Monitoring On Helping Behavior, Stefanie E. Naumann
The Effects Of Norms And Self-Monitoring On Helping Behavior, Stefanie E. Naumann
Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
A scenario-based experiment was used to test five hypotheses concerning group and individual predictors of individual intentions to perform helping behavior in a group. The results of an ANCOVA indicated that descriptive helping norms, personal helping norms, and selfmonitoring perceptions were positively associated with individual intentions to perform helping behavior. The findings underscore the value of considering the group context in which helping behavior operates. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales)-treated semiochemical-baited traps for control of Amblyomma variegatum Fabriscius (Acari: Ixodidae) under field conditions. Unfed A. variegatum adults (118) were seeded in each 100-m plot and allowed to acclimatise for 3 days. On the fourth day (Day 4), an emulsifiable formulation of M. anisopliae (consisting of 49.5% sterile distilled water, fungal conidia, 49.5% corn oil and 1% Tween 80) titrated at 109conidiaml-1 was applied in semiochemical-baited traps (900cm2) which were placed at five spots within the plot. The control and fungal treatments were repeated after 14 …

In the tropics, Anopheles mosquito abundance is greatest during the wet season and decline significantly during the dry season as larval habitats shrink. Population size fluctuations between wet and dry seasons may lead to variation in distribution of specific alleles within natural Anopheles populations, and a possible effect on the population genetic structure. We used 11 microsatellite markers to examine the effect of seasonality on population genetic structure of Anopheles gambiae s.s. at two sites along the Kenyan coast. All loci were highly polymorphic with the total number of alleles for pooled samples ranging from 7 (locus ND36) to 21 …

Microfluidic Interfaces For Coupling Hydrodynamic To Electrokinetic Flow And Microchannel Electrophoresis To Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry, Brent R. Reschke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Presented in this dissertation is a microfluidic interface for coupling hydrodynamic and electrokinetic flows, this interface was first studied theoretically and then experimentally to evaluate the electrophoretic extraction of a negatively charged analyte from a perpendicular hydrodynamic flow stream. Secondly the interface was used to perform the simultaneous extraction and separation of a cationic peptide and anionic proteins with low electroosmotic flow.;In addition, two important aspects of creating a microfluidic device to couple microchannel electrophoresis with mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization were also studied. These aspects included the electrospray emitter from which the electrospray originates and the incorporation of the …

Ultrasound has been used for the last 50 y in different processing applications. Depending on the power and frequency of the sound waves, ultrasound techniques can be classified in different categories. Low-intensity ultrasound uses high frequencies in the range of 100 kHz to 10 MHz and is mostly used for therapeutic purpose (frequencies between 1 and 10 MHz) and to passively monitor the characteristics of materials (frequencies between 100 kHz and 10 MHz). High-intensity ultrasound (HIU), on the other hand, uses lower frequencies in the range of 20 to 100 kHz and it is commonly used for cleaning, disrupting, and …
Writing And Refining Information Literacy Learning Outcomes, Christopher Sweet
Writing And Refining Information Literacy Learning Outcomes, Christopher Sweet
Scholarly Publications
One of the cornerstones of effective information literacy assessment is having clearly-defined student learning outcomes. Learning outcomes specify what learners will know or be able to do as a result of a learning activity. Accrediting bodies often look for specific learning outcomes as one component of the review process. Most librarians have received little –or no- training in writing learning outcomes. This workshop will provide an overview of learning outcomes, their role in assessment and how to write them. Participants are encouraged to come with an instruction session or class for which they want to write or refine learning outcomes.

Elawyering And The Future Of Legal Work, Richard Granat, Blair Janis, Stephanie Kimbro, Marc Lauritsen
Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Lecture Series
eLawyering is doing legal work – not just marketing it – over the Web. Pioneering practitioners have found dramatic new ways to communicate and collaborate with clients and other lawyers, produce documents, settle disputes, interact with courts, and manage legal knowledge. There are exciting initiatives underway now that deserve attention by all lawyers – present and future. The legal profession is being disrupted from without and from within. To be successful in the coming era, lawyers will need to know how to practice over the Web, manage client relationships in cyberspace, and offer “unbundled” services. This program discusses the knowledge …

This study examined perceptions of male and female models depicted smoking or not smoking cigarettes. Undergraduate students viewed photographs of smoking or nonsmoking models and then rated the models' credibility, homophily, attractiveness, likeability, considerateness, cleanliness, and healthiness. Analysis indicated that being viewed as a cigarette smoker damaged people's images. With the exception of two dimensions of credibility, smokers, compared to nonsmokers, were rated less favorably on every variable examined in this study. These results are discussed.
Nurturing Failure: Creating A Risk-Tolerant Library Culture That Embraces Change And Innovation, Christopher Sweet
Nurturing Failure: Creating A Risk-Tolerant Library Culture That Embraces Change And Innovation, Christopher Sweet
Scholarly Publications
The culture of success is pervasive in our society. It is unacceptable to get anything other than an “A”. “Win at all costs.” “No room for error.” At the same time, we know that great inventions always come after a long string of failures. In the corporate world, a few very successful companies and entrepreneurs have learned that calculated risk and the freedom to fail are the keys to innovation and progress. This webcast will examine how creating a risk-tolerant culture can aid in keeping academic libraries both vibrant and relevant in the current economy.

We know that many students have difficulties meeting faculty expectations for college-level research. Basic search strategies, critical thinking and evaluation skills are often lacking. Increased dialogue between academic librarians, school librarians and teaching faculty could begin to address some of these problems in a proactive manner. This presentation is a small step in that direction. Chris Sweet, Information Literacy Librarian at Illinois Wesleyan University, will introduce this topic from an academic librarian’s perspective. Dana Convery, English and Literature instructor at Prairie Central High School, will discuss high school research from the trenches. What research skills are being taught in the …

Background: Raised intracranial pressure (ICP) is known to complicate both traumatic and non-traumatic encephalopathies. It impairs cerebral perfusion and may cause death due to global ischaemia and intracranial herniation. Osmotic agents are widely used to control ICP. In children, guidelines for their use are mainly guided by adult studies. We conducted this review to determine the current evidence of the effectiveness of osmotic agents and their effect on resolution of coma and outcome in children with acute encephalopathy. Methods: We searched several databases for published and unpublished studies in English and French languages, between January 1966 and March 2009. We considered …

Individual cell shape changes are essential for epithelial morphogenesis. A transcriptional network for epithelial cell shape change is emerging in Drosophila, but this area remains largely unexplored in vertebrates. The distinction is important as so far, key downstream effectors of cell shape change in Drosophila appear not to be conserved. Rather, Shroom3 has emerged as a central effector of epithelial morphogenesis in vertebrates, driving both actin- and microtubule-based cell shape changes. To date, the morphogenetic role of Shroom3 has been explored only in the neural epithelium, so the broad expression of this gene raises two important questions: what are the …

Did you know that according to their Wikipedia biography entries, Senators Edward Kennedy and Robert Byrd both died on January, 20, 2009? In reality, neither Senator died on that date. Robert Byrd is still very much alive and Edward Kennedy lived through August of last year. In a few short years, Wikipedia has come to dominate the field of easy-to-access information on just about any topic. Due to prominent placing in search engine results, the first stop for biographical information is often Wikipedia. Since Wikipedia entries are user-generated, errors and blatant smear campaigns are commonplace. Political hopefuls now carefully craft …
